| Abstract: | Objective To investigate the clinical effect of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) diet therapy on the quality of life (QOL) in cancer patients. Methods A total of 117 inpatients with cancer were divided into groups A, B, and C according to whether to receive diet therapy and the daily number of times of diet therapy after conventional TCM treatment or Western medicine treatment. Group A did not receive diet therapy; group B received diet therapy less than once a day on average; group C received diet therapy at least once a day on average. The clinical effects were assessed based on the main symptom scores, eating disorder scores, and Karnofsky performance status (KPS) scores before and after treatment. Results After treatment, group A showed no significant decreases in main symptom score and eating disorder score (P>0.05); group B showed significant decrease in main symptom score (P<0.01); group C showed significant decreases in main symptom score and eating disorder score (P<0.05). For the patients not younger than 60 years, those receiving diet therapy had a significant greater change in KPS score than those not receiving diet therapy after treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion TCM diet therapy can improve the QOL in cancer patients and holds promise for clinical application. |
