The Migrant Clinicians Network’s Familias con Voz (Families with a Voice) project aims to train migrant men and women to become intimate partner violence (IPV) peer educators
in their communities. In preparation for implementing educational activities, a community survey was conducted with 298 participants
in three Texas border counties. Verbal abuse, such as name calling, was the most frequent type of violence reported. Men perceived
anger as a cause of partner violence significantly more than women. Only 22% of respondents reported knowing of a shelter
they could turn to for help. Surprisingly, a majority of participants cited “seeking help from the police” when asked about
ways to decrease partner violence. Survey results offer insight into developing effective intervention programs by capturing
the intended audiences’ beliefs and attitudes. Additionally, survey results reveal possible strategies for how to tackle IPV
in U.S.-Mexico border migrant farmworker communities.

Research investigating women’s risk assessments for intimate partner violence (IPV) shows that women can predict future violence
with relative accuracy. Limited research has investigated factors that are associated with perceived risk and the potential
behavioral consequences of victim risk perception. Results from a survey of women in a domestic violence shelter (N = 56) indicated that women perceive lower risk of future violence if the abusive relationship were to end and higher risk
of violence if it were to continue. Certain abuse experiences were related to elevated perceptions of personal risk for future
violence. Further, perceived personal risk predicted the women’s intention to terminate their relationship upon leaving shelter.
Results are discussed as they may inform interventions preventing IPV.

Dating Violence Victimization,Relationship Satisfaction,Mental Health Problems, and Acceptability of Violence: A Comparison of Men and Women 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two of the most common reported consequences of dating violence are its impact on the victim’s satisfaction with their romantic
relationship and its impact on the victim’s mental health. Recent research suggests that the strength of these relationships
may be moderated by the degree to which the dating violence is acceptable to the victim. However, studies of these relationships
have been limited to samples of women. The purpose of the present research was to examine the relationships among dating violence
victimization, relationship satisfaction, mental health problems, and acceptability of violence for a sample that includes
not only female victims, but also male victims. Using a sample of 155 male and 417 female college students, hierarchical regression
analyses found that dating violence victimization is associated with relationship satisfaction and mental health problems
for both men and women. For men, acceptability of violence moderated the relationship between dating violence victimization
and the mental health problems of depression, anxiety, and somatization. For women, acceptability of violence moderated the
relationship between dating violence victimization and relationship satisfaction only.

No one, young or old, is immune to interpersonal violence (IPV). Female victims come from a variety of circumstances and across
all ages. However, much of the research and services have focused almost exclusively on younger women. This article compares
women 65 and older to women under 65, who utilized domestic violence (DV) services in a mid-western state over a five-year
period. Although there are many similarities in the findings, differences include that older victims were more likely to be
White, report more emotional and less physical abuse, be referred to services by a legal source, have special needs or disabilities,
and receive fewer services, less service hours and fewer contacts than younger victims utilizing DV services. Implications
for research and practice are discussed.

While separate evidence exists that married military women have high rates of both intimate partner violence victimization
and aggression, little is known about the context of this violence, including the extent to which the violence committed toward
and by military women is physical, psychological or sexual, whether the violence is unilateral or bi-directional, and the
extent of injury sustained or inflicted. In order to gain a more multi-dimensional understanding of the violence in the lives
of military women, this study involved 248 enlisted females who completed a self-report survey about themselves and their
spouses’ behavior. Results indicate that the majority of violence reported was bi-directional and symmetrical in terms of
type and level of severity. However, enlisted females were more than three times as likely to be victims of unilateral severe
violence as their male civilian spouses. Demographic factors associated with these patterns of violence were also identified.

American Indian and European American women’s definitions and perceived causes for domestic violence were examined. Attitudes
towards violence and battering as it relates to the self were measured with two scales. As predicted, results indicated American
Indian women and European American women held different conceptualizations of what constitutes domestic violence and different
notions concerning the cause of domestic violence. Also, American Indian women were more attuned to external causes for violence,
while European American women referred to internal explanations for such violence. Differences in social and psychological
histories of violence and attitudinal orientations toward violence were indicated. Legal and health system changes are recommended
in order to combat violence in Indian country.

This representative national survey examined incidence of husband-to-wife violence in the past year, lifetime exposure to
parental violence, and the relationships between victimization experiences of family violence and mental health among South
Korean women (N = 1,079). The major findings were that incidence rate of husband-to-wife violence among Korean women was 29.5%, which was
much higher than those of other nations, and that their experiences of physical violence by husbands in the last year and
lifetime verbal abuse by parents had strong associations with the mental health of victims. The findings suggest that preventive
intervention programs for male perpetrators as well as domestic violence victims with mental health problems and comprehensive
interventions for Korean couples are urgently needed. In addition, parents should be educated about how to modify their children’s
behavior without physical punishment or verbal abuse.

This paper uses longitudinal and nationally representative survey data to investigate the direct relationship between three
forms of child maltreatment (neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse), and future intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration
in the USA. We further examine the indirect effect that child maltreatment has on future IPV perpetration through the presence
of youth violence perpetration, and the roles of socioeconomic factors on committing youth violence and IPV. Analyses indicate
that gender differences exist for the developmental relationship between child maltreatment and young adult IPV perpetration,
and the effects of socioeconomic factors on youth violence and IPV perpetration. For males, the direct effects of being neglected/physically
abused as a child on IPV perpetration are not significant. However, the indirect effects of being neglected/physically abused
on IPV perpetration through the presence of youth violence perpetration are significant. For females, the direct effects of
being neglected/physically abused on IPV perpetration are significant. The indirect effect of being neglected on IPV perpetration
is significant, while the indirect effect of childhood physical abuse is not significant. Childhood sexual abuse is not significantly
directly associated with IPV perpetration for females; however, for males, it is the strongest (i.e., largest effect size)
direct predictor of IPV perpetration. The indirect effects of childhood sexual abuse on IPV perpetration are not significant
for both females and males.

Scholarship, policy and practice relating to domestic violence have all seen many changes in the recent past. The definition
of domestic violence is often wide ranging describing physical violent within an adult (married) couple to the inclusion of
intergenerational abuse and violence. As a result of feminist interventions a gender-based approach to domestic violence is
now well established. Most research using this model shows that the majority of victims are women and most perpetrators are
men. This impacts upon the policies, initiatives and service provision. One consequence is that it fails to explore the possibility
of women’s different experiences of domestic violence. The point of departure for this paper is that it fails to take account
of domestic violence in lesbian partnerships. Using data generated by way of an annual analysis of counselling cases of generated
by a German lesbian specific social services agency and data from focussed interviews with 20 lesbians who have been violent
to their lesbian partners this article offers a range of new insights into the nature and experiences of domestic violence
in same sex domestic relationships and considers the significance of this data in relation to policing and other modes of
intervention to bring that violence to an end.

The associations between intimate partner violence (IPV) and mental health among adolescent and young adult mothers were compared.
The sample was drawn from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study and participants were 672 mothers between the ages
of 14 and 21. IPV was significantly positively associated with both depression and anxiety among young adult mothers. However,
these associations were not found among adolescent mothers. In addition, IPV and marital status were significantly related
among young adult mothers, but not adolescent mothers. Results suggest that IPV may have different consequences during different
parts of the life course, or that mental health symptoms may be reported only later in life.

Personality disorder features have been an important basis of many batterer typologies (Babcock et al. J Fam Violence 15:391–409,
2000; Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart Psychol Bull 116:476–497, 1994), most notably Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorders. Aggression that partner violent men commit has also been
found to be heterogeneous, motivated by the need to control (proactive) or enacted out of emotion (reactive). In the present
study, men who were physically abusive towards their female partner (N = 124 couples) were administered the SCID-II diagnostic interview for Antisocial (ASPD) and Borderline Personality Disorder
(BPD). It was hypothesized that partner violent men diagnosed with ASPD would show highest levels of proactive violence whereas
men diagnosed with BPD (alone or comorbidly with ASPD) were expected to be reactively violent. Results suggest that violence
perpetrated by men with different personality disorders differs in its function. Within the context of intimate relationships,
BPD/comorbid men appear to use violence more reactively, while ASPD men tend to use violence both proactively and reactively.
Implications for treatment are discussed.

Mandatory arrest laws for intimate partner violence (IPV) have increased both the number and proportion of arrests that involve
female defendants. Whether these numbers should be as high as they are remains a source of controversy. Most practitioners
argue that women are usually arrested for defensive actions used in the face of assaults perpetrated by their spouse/partner.
Others believe that these higher arrest rates more accurately reflect the true prevalence of physical aggression perpetrated
by women. One way to help clarify this debate is to take a closer look at the women charged with IPV. The present study used
self-reported information and criminal justice records on prior aggression to classify 485 women convicted of IPV into four
distinct subtypes (i.e., no prior violence, primary victim, primary aggressor, and primary aggressor not identified). Despite the fact that all of these women were arrested for and convicted of IPV, analyses consistently found that few of
the women could be considered as the primary aggressor in their relationship. Nor, however, were all of the women classified
as primary victims. Methodological issues are discussed as well as the policy, practice, and research implications of this
study.

A total of 31 Chinese community members (8 males and 23 females) were recruited from three social service agencies in San
Francisco (Donaldina Cameron House, Richmond Area Multi-Services, and St. Mary’s Chinese Center) to participate in a study
examining the relationship between problem gambling and intimate partner violence (IPV). A survey approach was taken which
assessed the participants’ demographic characteristics including age, gender, country of birth, and employment, as well as
factors relating to their intimate partners, including partner’s alcohol abuse and problem gambling. Younger participants
and those whose partners were problem gamblers were more likely to experience IPV. However, partner’s problem gambling was
a significant predictor only at the ten-point cutoff on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) (Lesieur and Blume, American Journal of Psychiatry, 1987) and not at the five-point cutoff. Chinese participants whose partners were problem gamblers (SOGS ≥ 10) were 27.5 times
more likely to experience IPV. Findings are discussed and social work practice, policy, and research implications are highlighted.

Constructing Women Who Experience Male Violence: Criminal Legal Discourse and Individual Experiences
Helen Baker 《Liverpool Law Review》2008,29(2):123-142
This article examines the relationship between how women who experience violence from a male partner construct themselves,
and how criminal legal discourse constructs female victims of violence. It is argued that in both arenas, women are constructed
according to norms which emanate from a discourse of conventional femininity which operates together with a practice of shame.
Utilising empirical data gained from qualitative interviews with women who experienced male violence, the article contends
that the construction of the female victim of violence in criminal legal discourses as imbued with stereotypical ‘feminine’
characteristics such as passivity and weakness, may influence these women’s own construction and understanding of themselves.
The existence of a practice of shame further consolidates the self-regulation of the women themselves to these norms of femininity.
This construction is posited to be problematic as the experiences of women of male violence rarely ‘fit’ within these explanations.
The article contends that in order to better understand women’s experiences of male violence; both criminal legal and individual
women’s discourses need to be read in terms of the power, knowledge and effects which they exert upon individual women. It
is argued that this alternative reading of these discourses has the potential for transformation as they are invested in the
subject.

Violence against women has been recognized as an important social and human rights issue that affects all cultures and societies.
Although this issue has been more frequently studied in high-income countries, such as the United States, the scholarly research
of violence against women in Africa, especially West Africa, has been scarce. Using a representative sample, this study examined
violence against women in Togo, particularly the types of violence that Togolese women endure, and factors that affect a Togolese
woman’s chance of being victimized by her intimate partner. The findings indicated that Togolese women experienced different
forms of violence. Also, some covariates at the individual level significantly affected a woman’s risk of experiencing intimate
partner violence. Several policy recommendations have been made.

This article presents results of a study examining what happens to children when domestic violence is committed against their
mothers. While many investigations have pointed to child exposure to violence in homes where women are battered, few have
examined direct reports about what happens to children when adult domestic violence occurs. This study collected direct reports
from mothers on real-life events and was designed to go beyond earlier research by eliciting information on a larger array
of family and contextual factors that may account for variation in mother’s and their children’s direct and indirect exposure
to violence within the same home. Anonymous telephone interviews with 111 battered mothers in four metropolitan areas across
the United States elicited detailed information from women on the violence against them and their children. Findings confirm
the seriousness of co-occurring mother and child exposure to violence. The research also revealed that women and children
were often injured while trying to protect each other from the abuser. The article concludes by recommending further enhancing
collaboration between child protection and battered women’s services; augmenting prevention and early intervention services
to families experiencing adult domestic violence; and focusing on protecting and increasing the safety of both children and their battered mothers.

This study examined the impact of acceptability of violence on dating violence victimization, relationship satisfaction, and
relationship commitment. A survey administered to a sample of 155 male and 417 female college students showed that relationship
satisfaction was significantly associated with relationship commitment, but that dating violence victimization was not. Moreover,
acceptability of violence emerged as a significant moderator of the relationship between satisfaction and commitment in dating
relationships when gender differences were assessed. Discussion of these findings and future research are included.

Growing up in a violent home predisposes children to a host of behavioral and emotional difficulties. This study examined
whether perpetrator and victim gender have an impact on depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior for victims of child physical
abuse (CPA) and also with regard to witnessing interparental violence (IPV). This study also examined whether witnessing siblings
being abused would elicit high levels of depressive symptoms and aggressive behavior. College students (n = 675) were assessed for both exposure to IPV and child physical abuse prior to age 18. Participants completed measures of
depression and aggression. With regard to victims of CPA, participants victimized by both parents and those victimized by
mothers only had significantly higher levels of aggression. For depressive symptoms, females having both parents as perpetrators
or fathers only had significantly higher depressive symptoms. With regard to witnessing IPV, being abused by both parents
was associated with endorsement of more aggression and depressive symptoms. With regard to witnessing sibling violence, the
results were similar to those found for victims of CPA.

Sibling violence is presumed to be the most common form of family violence and the least studied. Based on data from “Physical Violence in American Families, 1976,” this paper assesses the family environment factors associated with sibling physical violence. Of a range of potential family influences, measures of family disorganization were the most significant predictors of sibling violence, overriding the characteristics of children or particular family demands. What mattered most to the occurrence of sibling violence was a child’s actual experience of physical violence at the hands of a parent, maternal disciplinary practices and whether husbands lose their temper. These findings point to the deleterious effect of corporal punishment, and suggest sibling violence in families is associated with more ominous family and gender dynamics.

This review paper seeks to explore some of the reasons why rehabilitation programs for male perpetrators of domestic violence
appear to be less effective in reducing recidivism than programs for other offender groups. It is argued that while the model
of systems response to domestic violence has predominated at the inter-agency level, further consideration might be given
to way in which men’s intervention groups are both designed and delivered. It is concluded that the program logic of men’s
domestic violence programs is rarely articulated leading to low levels of program integrity, and that one way to further improve
program effectiveness is to incorporate some of the approaches evident in more general violence prevention programs and from
what is know about good practice in general about offender rehabilitation.
