SEVERAL years ago, few travel books ever mentioned Yangpu District in the context of exploring glitzy Shanghai. That's understandable considering the fact that this cradle of Shanghai's modem industry wore down into a "rust belt" when it fell through the cracks of economic and industrial activity begun in the 1980s. Old legacies and new endeavors are legitimizing its new claim to an old economic birthright, and it's doing it all in style - again - in a transformed, knowledge economy.  相似文献

THE aftermath of spectacular success is often a look back over the shoulder, and Chinese entrepreneurs-cum-philanthropists are busy trying to give back to their societies. As it turns out, corporations are discovering philanthropy is a lot more complicated than they thought. When life was simple, the donor could see where the donation went. When donors and benefactors rubbed elbows, good was done, and seen to be done. But these are the days of "big charity" - the needs may be great or small, or the beneficiaries far or near, but the management of foundations is complicated now; it isn't easy to follow the money and it isn't all about money anymore.  相似文献

LETTERS
I would like to tell you my story and hope you will find it interesting. My maternal grandmother's ancestors left China and all its traditions several generations ago. Though I live in the United States, go to an American school and am thoroughly assimilated into the American way of life, I am still proud of my heritage, however remote. I honor it by learning the erhu, or traditional Chinese violin, taking Putongua lessons, and studying Chinese history.  相似文献

Second Wind
EVERYTHING old is new again and this is especially the case in China everything from the industrial revolution to the individual career is a renewable phenomenon. Many retired or semi-retired Westerners have pulled up stakes and headed here, a move that blew fresh air into their professional lives, provided a chance to do new but related work, or offered the challenge of doing something entirely different. Barry Cunningham is one American that fits this category of China-lover. The double Emmy Award-winning TV reporter and television news producer (1991 and 1996) stuck with his profession, but in other ways his whole life got its second wind.  相似文献

MARKET WATCH
TO THE POINT:China is becoming more expen- sive.Rising food and housing prices are empty- ing peoples' wallets, while at the same time more money has been flowing into China through for- eign trade or through investment. The consumer price and producer price indexes both hit their highest points in history, forcing the central bank to raise the reserve requirement ratio once again, also to a record high.Amid wide speculation over a coming interest rate hike, the mainland stock market experienced its largest one-week loss ever in early November, but was recovering grad- ually going into mid-month.  相似文献

Every day, I take the same road on my way to the office and back home. Few people know how that road was given its name or ask themselves about its meaning. That old road, Henan Street, has a history of over 300 years. In my childhood, my grandfather told me about it and other stories about my city's past. That city is Jilin, located in the province of the same name, in the northeast part of China. The Songhua River, in a beautiful wide vista, divides the city into two parts, which is the only city in China that shares the name of the province to  相似文献

TOUGH Valentine's Day was first embraced by college students and the middle class in China, it is now finding its way into rural areas. Country dwellers have become better connected with the outside world through the televisions and computers that are increasingly common in their homes, or more directly through their working experience in cities. The holiday calls for the blatant celebration of love, a custom not found in traditional Chinese culture, and this gives the generally shy and conservative Chinese farmers the chance to express affection in public for the people they privately adore.  相似文献
