The Problem of African Advancement on the Copperbelt of Northern Rhodesia

The following is an address which was given by Mr. R. L. Prainat a joint meeting of the Royal African Society with the RoyalEmpire Society. He is Chairman of the Rhodesian Selection Trust,which controls the mines at Luanshya and Mufulira.     

Ghana Since Independence

The address which follows was given by the High Commissionerfor Ghana at a Joint meeting of the Royal African Society andthe Royal Commonwealth Society on June 5th, 1958. Mr. BrianF. Macdona, Vice-Chairman of the Council of the Royal AfricanSociety, took the chair.

The New Ghana

Town Planning in West Africa

This article represents the major part of an address given toa combined meeting with the Royal Empire Society on the 26thJune. From the Chair, Mr. A. R. I. Mellor explained that Mr.Fry will be returning to West Africa to continue the work, eventhough his post as Adviser has expired.

This article represents the second half of a speech made ata combined meeting with the Royal Empire Society, on the 27thFebruary. Mr. Creech Jones was deputising, at short notice,for his chief, Mr. George Hall, with Lord Harlech in the chair.The first part of the address was devoted to a general statementof British Colonial principles.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Northern Region ofNigeria, gave the following address at a joint meeting of theRoyal African Society and the Royal Empire Society on June 6,1957. Mr. M. T. Mbu, Commissioner for the Federation of Nigeriain the United Kingdom, took the chair.     

The Social Role of African Music

The well-known South African collector of indigenous music visitedBritain last autumn to collect funds for an international Africanmusic library to be organised by the African Music Society ofJohannesburg. In the course of this mission, which was successful,Mr. Tracey gave a lecture demonstration to members of the InternationalAfrican Institute, Royal Empire Society and Royal African Society.We reproduce the remarks he then made, with an indication ofthe music he played.     

African Student at Home

The following address was given before a joint meeting of theRoyal African Society and the Royal Empire Society on June 24.Mr. B. F. Macdona, Vice-Chairman of the Council of the RoyalAfrican Society, took the chair. Miss Trevelyan is adviser tooverseas students at the University of London. She has beenassociated with student welfare work for a number of years,and is also a familiar figure in London musical circles.

Michael BlundellM.L.C. former Minister of Agriculture, Kenya, at a joint meetingof the Royal African Society and the Royal Commonwealth Societyon May 7,1959. The Present Situation in Kenya

Mr. Blundell is Minister without Portfolio in the Kenya Governmentand a member of the War Council set up to deal with the Emergency.This address was given by him to a joint meeting of the RoyalAfrican Society and the Royal Empire Society on November 25,1954. Lord Chandos, D.S.O., M.C., was in the chair.
