FIRE was as crucial to the development of ancient civilizations as electricity has been to modern times, and the ancient peoples of both Eastern and Western cultures wor-shipped those who brought fire as heroes. In China, many ethnic groups still mark the day on which their god of fire lit up their lives; the Axi is one of them. The Axi ethnic minority group is an offshoot of the Yi people that live mainly in Yunnan's Mile County, 143 kilometers from the provincial capital of Kunming. On a recent trip to Yunnan, I heard an ancient Axi legend about the origin of man-made fire.  相似文献

Examining sports from a cultural perspective rather than their technical aspect, we will see that hidden in the process of globalization is a need to discuss the special values of ethnic or traditional sports. Covered up by the socalled "universality" of sports in general, these special values determine the cultural uniqueness of China's ethnic sports, which is often reduced to oblivion as sports, taken as a whole,  相似文献

Snuff bottles
Snuff bottles first appeared in China in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and, as their name suggests, were originally indeed used as a container for snuff tobacco, first of all by the Manchu, Mongols and Tibetans. The reason for their popularity at that time is to be found in the customs of those ethnic minorities: because those ethnic groups mainly led a nomadic life that entailed frequent use of hay or firewood. China is a culturally rich and diverse country. Throughout the nation, 56 ethnic groups have been identified. And though the majority Han (90.56 percent of the population) dominate, the rest of the ethnicities enrich the country in a variety of ways, be it linguistic, gastronomic, artistic or historic. Yet poverty, illiteracy, as well as lack of educational and medical services have hindered the advancement of these peoples. While ethnic minorities have lagged behind in terms of economic, educational, and societal advancement, the government has pledged to assist in their development, and is attaching greater importance to helping minorities catch up to the dominant culture.  相似文献

The great kingdom of Khitan, or Liao, was founded in 907 AD, when Yelu Abaoji was elected as head of all the tribes and ruled as Khan, or Emperor. From that time on, the Khitan people reigned across northern China, northern and central Asia for 307 years, co-existing with three other kingdoms, the Western Xia, Southern Song and Jin.  相似文献
