This work examines the moderator effect of sex and age on the relationship between different types of exposure to intimate
partner violence (IPV) and child psychopathology and functional impairment. One hundred and sixty-six Spanish children aged
4 –17 years exposed to intimate partner violence were assessed using a diagnostic interview and other instruments for the
measurement of psychopathology and functional impairment. Participants were classified in three groups according to the degree
of exposure: witness (N = 77), involved (N = 63) and victim (N = 26). According to mothers’ self-reports and mother-child combined information, boy victims of IPV showed more mood disorders
than involved or witness boys. There were no other moderator effects of either sex or age. The effect of exposure to intimate
partner violence among children was not dependent, in general, on the child’s sex or age, and this has important implications
for the assessment, treatment, and prevention of children’s exposure to IPV. 相似文献

This study explores the personality disorder symptoms of women victims of intimate male partner violence (IPV), after controlling
for the contribution of experiences of childhood abuse. Victims of both physical and psychological violence (n = 73) or psychological violence alone (n = 53) were compared with non-abused control women (n = 52). Information about sociodemographic characteristics, childhood abuse, and personality characteristics (MCMI-II) was
obtained through face-to-face structured interviews. Women victims of IPV had higher scores than controls in schizoid, avoidant,
self-defeating personality scales, as well as in the three pathological personality scales (schizotypal, borderline and paranoid).
Both physical and psychological IPV were strongly associated with personality disorder symptomatology, regardless of the effects
of childhood abuse. These findings underscore the need to screen for personality disorder symptoms in women victims of IPV
when dealing with therapeutic interventions. 相似文献

The relationship between a history of physical or sexual abuse and current suicidal ideation was examined in the current study
based on data from the Washington state 2002 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Out of the total sample of
4081, 1058 indicated they had experienced either physical or sexual abuse before the age of 18, 52 indicated they had experienced
physical abuse in the past 12 months, and 210 indicated they had been forced to have sex since the age of 18. Additionally,
106 indicated they had seriously considered committing suicide in the past year. After controlling for such factors as age,
gender, income, education, race, employment and marital status and the interactions between different abuse risk factors using
multivariate logistic regression, results showed that a history of childhood physical (OR = 2.31, 95% CI = 1.364, 3.90) or sexual (OR = 2.72, 95% CI = 1.58, 4.67) abuse and adult physical (OR = 27.30, 95% CI = 11.64, 64.01) or sexual (OR = 5.87, 95% CI = 3.24, 10.63) abuse all were related to current suicidal ideation. Implications for future research are discussed. 相似文献

This study examined the mediating role of attachment in the relationship between childhood maltreatment perpetrated by parents
and adult symptomatology. Young adults (N = 803), with and without a history of abuse, were recruited from a local university to complete a series of questionnaires
inquiring about past maltreatment experiences, adult attachment in current close relationships, and psychological symptomatology.
While attachment was found to be a mediator for all three types of abuse when they were looked at individually, a more robust
mediated effect was found in the case of psychological abuse. When all three types of parental maltreatment (psychological,
physical, and exposure to family violence) were considered simultaneously, attachment mediated the relationship between only
psychological abuse and symptomatology. Parallel meditated effects were observed across two measures of symptomatology: trauma-related
symptomatology and externalizing and internalizing symptomatology. The results of this study further our understanding of
psychological maltreatment and its intra-individual correlates. 相似文献

Preliminary research suggests that child abuse is indirectly associated with female-perpetrated intimate partner violence
via posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and anger. To date, however, no known studies have investigated these relationships
for physical and psychological dating violence within a female college sample. Therefore, the purpose of the current study
was to examine the impact of child abuse history, PTSD symptoms, and anger arousal on female-perpetrated physical and psychological
dating violence. Female undergraduates (N = 496) completed measures of child abuse, PTSD symptoms, anger arousal, and dating violence perpetration as part of a larger
trauma and violence study. Results indicated that child abuse directly predicted female-perpetrated physical and psychological
dating violence and indirectly impacted female-perpetrated physical and psychological dating violence via PTSD symptoms and
anger arousal. The direct relationships between PTSD symptoms and female-perpetrated physical and psychological dating violence
were nonsignificant after controlling for the effect of anger arousal. 相似文献

This representative national survey examined incidence of husband-to-wife violence in the past year, lifetime exposure to
parental violence, and the relationships between victimization experiences of family violence and mental health among South
Korean women (N = 1,079). The major findings were that incidence rate of husband-to-wife violence among Korean women was 29.5%, which was
much higher than those of other nations, and that their experiences of physical violence by husbands in the last year and
lifetime verbal abuse by parents had strong associations with the mental health of victims. The findings suggest that preventive
intervention programs for male perpetrators as well as domestic violence victims with mental health problems and comprehensive
interventions for Korean couples are urgently needed. In addition, parents should be educated about how to modify their children’s
behavior without physical punishment or verbal abuse.

Intimate Partner Violence in Extremely Poor Women: Longitudinal Patterns and Risk Markers 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Despite high revalence rates of intimate partner violence in the lives of extremely poor women with dependent children, few
studies have investigated the patterns of violence that occur over time, and the characteristics of women that serve as risk
markers for partner violence. This paper describes patterns of domestic violence longitudinally and uses multivariate analyses
to delineate childhood and adult risk markers for recent intimate partner violence in this population of women. Analyses draw
upon a sample of 436 homeless and extremely poor housed mothers receiving welfare, in a mid-sized city in Massachusetts with
a large Hispanic population of Puerto Rican descent and relatively fewer Blacks. We found that among women with complete longitudinal
data (N=280), almost two-thirds experienced intimate partner violence at some point during their adult life by the end of study follow-up,
and that the abuse before and after the baseline interview was episodic and limited over time. To examine the role of individual
women's factors, while controlling for partner characteristics, we used baseline data on women who had been partnered during
the past year (N=336). Among childhood predictors, we found that sexual molestation contributed most significantly to adult intimate partner
violence that occurred during the past year prior to the baseline interview. Adult risk markers included inadequate emotional
support from non-professionals, poor self-esteem, and a partner with substance abuse problems. Having a partner with poor
work history was another independent predictor of recent abuse. Ethnicity did not significantly predict whether women were
abused or not during the past year, contrary to other findings reported in the literature. 相似文献

Prior research has provided substantial evidence that child maltreatment and exposure to physical intimate partner violence
(IPV) are associated with increased externalizing behavior problems among children and adolescents. However, little is known
about the effects of exposure to psychological IPV and exposure to the physical abuse of a sibling. Using a total sample (N = 2,572) and subsample (n = 441) of children ages 3–18 years old, the purpose of this study was to assess whether cumulative types of family violence
lead to higher mean externalizing behavior scores and to examine the effects of single types of indirect and direct family
violence on children’s mean externalizing behavior scores. Results confirmed that children who experienced any type of family
violence victimization had higher mean externalizing behavior scores compared to children with no history of family violence;
however, few differences in externalizing behavior scores were found as the number of family violence types increased. Children
who experienced indirect types of family violence (e.g., exposure to the physical abuse of a sibling) had higher externalizing
behavior scores than children who experienced direct maltreatment (e.g., child physical abuse). Findings from this study suggest
that researchers and service providers should adopt a broader conceptualization of family violence victimization and increase
the amount of services provided to children who are indirectly victimized. 相似文献

Relationship satisfaction, investment, and commitment in women experiencing extensive psychological abuse were examined to
determine predictive factors. Participants were the top quartile of a national sample of women in conflictual relationships
(N = 81) experiencing psychological maltreatment. Relationship satisfaction, investment, and commitment were each used as criterion
variables with conceptually related factors as the predictors (e.g., reactions to the psychological abuse; mental health indicators;
personality variables; perceived harm; problematic relationship schemas; response styles; demographics). These relationship
markers were differentially predicted within this group of women. Three independent clusters of women, based on patterns of
satisfaction, investment, and commitment scores, were compared regarding physical abuse, reactions to psychological abuse,
ratings of perceived harm, endorsement of relationship schemas, psychological distress variables, and personality variables.
The cluster of women reporting higher satisfaction, investment, and commitment in these seemingly aversive relationships frequently
demonstrated differences from the other two clusters. Implications for clinical applications are discussed. 相似文献

Women in substance use treatment report rates of childhood sexual abuse and intimate partner violence that far exceed those
reported by women in the general population. Previous research with nonrandom samples of women in substance use treatment
suggests that there is a statistically significant relationship between childhood sexual abuse and intimate partner violence;
however, little is known about the mechanisms of risk between these two public health concerns among this population of women.
To address this gap in knowledge and to inform intervention strategies, this study examined direct and mediated relationships
between childhood sexual abuse and intimate partner violence risk among a random sample of 416 women in methadone treatment.
In addition to high rates of childhood sexual abuse (57.9%), intimate partner violence (lifetime prevalence, 89.7%; 6-month
prevalence, 78.4%), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD, 28.6%), and global psychological distress (19.5%), findings suggest
that the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and intimate partner violence is mediated by mental health problems and
that women experiencing PTSD or global psychological distress are 2.7 and 2.4 times more likely to experience intimate partner
violence than women without such experiences, respectively. Although not a mediator in this relationship, financial independence
reduced women's risk of partner violence by two-thirds. The paper includes discussion of social learning and stress and coping theories to explicate the findings and to inform intervention
strategies.

This article explores how women empowerment affects Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in Bangladesh using a cross-sectional
investigation of currently married women (n = 4,181) sampled via the Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey (BDHS), 2007. About one-fourth (24%) of currently married Bangladeshi
women experienced both physical and/or sexual IPV in the past year. Prevalence of physical and sexual violence was 19.4% and
10.5%, respectively. Younger generation (age 15–24), illiterate, rural, and the poorest household wealth categorized women
were much victimized. Current employment status predicted intimate partner violence. Household decision-making pattern also
emerged as a predictor of IPV. Likelihood of all forms of IPV increases with increase of number of participation in household
decision-making. Promoting women empowerment in the household without men’s support may put women at more risk of IPV. 相似文献

A meta-analysis investigating the relationship between marital satisfaction/discord and intimate partner violence (IPV) in
heterosexual relationships was conducted with 32 articles. Overall, a small-to-moderate effect size (r = −0.27) indicated a significant and negative relationship existed between marital satisfaction/discord and IPV. Moderator
analyses found no differences between effect size based on construct examined (discord or satisfaction). However, the magnitudes
of observed effect sizes were influenced by other moderator variables, including the use of standardized versus non-standardized
measures, gender of the offender and victim, role in the violence (perpetrator versus victim), and sample type (clinical versus
community). The data suggests that gender is an especially important moderator variable in understanding the relationship
between marital satisfaction/discord and IPV. 相似文献

Researchers have not investigated mental health outcomes among couples who are reciprocally violent towards each other. The
present study investigated differences in partner violence (psychological, physical, and sexual) and mental health symptoms
(depression, anxiety, hostility, and somatic) between two types of reciprocally violent couples: situational couple violence
(SCV) and mutual control violence (MVC). SCV couples use violence to address stressful family conflicts, while MVC couples
use violence as a tool to control each other. Participants (N = 609) completed surveys that contained several instruments that measured past violence, coercive behaviors, physical injuries,
and mental health symptoms. Results revealed that MVC reported significantly higher levels of violent perpetration and worse
physical and mental health than SCV. These findings have implications for understanding the role of coercion in partner violence
and mental health, which can be used for the development of appropriate mental health services for couples who are mutually
violent towards each other. 相似文献

For most intimate partners, safety is an important goal and basic need. How a partner perceives safety has an impact on what
happens in the relationship, and this will in turn affect the responses from the other partner. Lack of safety can provoke
negative emotions and actions which can lead to relationship deterioration and violence. However, little is known about this
process from the insider’s perspective. In this study, constructivist grounded theory methods were used to analyze interviews
from individuals (n = 37) to better understand individual appraisals of relational safety. The results include a theory that illustrates the
process of relational safety and threat. This model articulates how certain relational conditions precede a perception of
safety or threat, which then leads to corresponding actions. Implications of the model include a focus on interaction and
context when assessing for safety and abuse, as well as the importance of self regulation. 相似文献

This study examined the relations between childhood maltreatment, daily life hassles, and intimate partner violence among
low-income, suicidal, abused African American women (N = 208). Findings indicated a significant association between childhood maltreatment and intimate partner violence, such that
women who experienced childhood maltreatment were more likely to experience intimate partner violence as adults than those
who reported no childhood maltreatment history. Also, results from bootstrapping analyses revealed that daily life stressors
mediated the link between childhood maltreatment and both physical and nonphysical forms of intimate partner violence. These
findings highlight the importance of thoroughly assessing for a history of childhood maltreatment, current intimate partner
violence, and the nature and extent of daily hassles when working with low-income African American women, as well as helping
abused women with a history of childhood maltreatment to cope effectively with the daily life hassles that they encounter. 相似文献

Children are overrepresented in households with intimate-partner violence (IPV), and many suffer the double burden of being
the subject of maltreatment and bearing the consequences of abuse to their mothers. Despite this situation, little information
exists concerning parenting by women who have been abused by an intimate partner. We examine the relationship between women’s
experiences with IPV and the quality of maternal parenting using data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being.
The sample consisted of 1,943 female caregivers of children younger than 10 years investigated for child maltreatment. Women
who had experienced IPV in the past but were no longer victims of IPV had significantly better parenting scores than women
who were currently experiencing IPV, when other risk factors were controlled. This study adds to the evidence that IPV does
not necessarily impair maternal parenting. Women abused by an intimate partner deserve a thorough assessment of what services
they need: parenting services should be offered as warranted on a case-by-case evaluation of the particular woman’s parenting
skills. 相似文献

Despite “cycle of violence” (Widom Psychological Bulletin, 106, 3–28, 1989, p. 4) theories prevailing for the past 30 years, few studies have looked at the empirical relationship between experiencing childhood physical abuse and becoming perpetrators of violence in adulthood. Those studies that do exist omit consideration of intervening therapeutic experiences. In the present study, archival data from an outpatient mental health clinic was used to examine whether therapeutic experiences mediate the relationship between experiencing childhood physical abuse by a parental figure and subsequent involvement as a perpetrator of physical violence. Treatment-seeking individuals (N?=?816) responded to three items about whether they had experiences of childhood physical abuse, whether they acted violently in adulthood, and whether they had ever before received counseling or therapy. Past counseling/psychotherapy treatment was a significant mediator between experiencing childhood physical abuse and perpetrating physical violence in adulthood, even after controlling for the effect of the victims’ gender. Findings suggest that psychotherapeutic experiences after experiencing childhood physical abuse may decrease the likelihood of perpetrating violence in adulthood. Limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed. 相似文献

Research investigating women’s risk assessments for intimate partner violence (IPV) shows that women can predict future violence
with relative accuracy. Limited research has investigated factors that are associated with perceived risk and the potential
behavioral consequences of victim risk perception. Results from a survey of women in a domestic violence shelter (N = 56) indicated that women perceive lower risk of future violence if the abusive relationship were to end and higher risk
of violence if it were to continue. Certain abuse experiences were related to elevated perceptions of personal risk for future
violence. Further, perceived personal risk predicted the women’s intention to terminate their relationship upon leaving shelter.
Results are discussed as they may inform interventions preventing IPV.

High Risk Behaviors Among Victims of Sibling Violence 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Despite the fact that sibling abuse has been documented as the most common form of intrafamilial abuse, it has been largely
overlooked. Using data from the 2007 Delaware Secondary School Student Survey (N = 8,122), this paper focuses on four objectives: to estimate prevalence of sibling abuse, examine the relationship between
sibling violence and high risk behaviors such as substance use, delinquency and aggression, explore the interplay of sibling
abuse and other forms of family violence in predicting high risk behaviors, and test theory. Results suggest that sibling
violence occurs more frequently than other forms of child abuse. Results also confirm that sibling violence is significantly
related to substance use, delinquency, and aggression. These effects remain significant after controlling for other forms
of family violence. The data suggest support for feminist theory and social learning theory. 相似文献
