Cherry Wang, a 29-year-old designer in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, found herself not acting as impulsively during this year's Double 11 shopping festival as she had in previous years. The event was initiated by Taobao, an online marketplace of China's tech firm Alibaba, in 2009, and has become an annual shopping extravaganza that usually lasts for several days until November 11. Wang spent around 1,500 yuan ($235) this year, mainly on clothes, snacks, pet gear and car products. After receiving all the packages, she returned around a quarter of them. "The services of e-commerce platforms were user-friendly this year. The prolonged period made it unnecessary to stay up late to snatch the best goods and discount rules were simplified. Getting a refund was also easier," she told Beijing Review.

One seemingly trivial issue has vexed Liu Wenyan for over 30 years. Liu only needs one shoe, but every time she goes shoe shopping she has to buy a pair. Growing up in Guizhou Province in southwest China, Liu lost one leg in a traffic accident at the age of 4. Now aged 37, she has spent over three decades searching for either a seller of single shoes, or some-one else with whom she can share the pair. Paralympic high jump star Gui Yuna, who is the same age as Liu, faces the same problem. Gui comes from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and, at 7, also lost her leg in a car ac-cident. The accident didn't discourage her from pursuing her athletic passion and in 2007 she broke the high jump world record for women amputees at China's 2007 National Games for Persons With Disabilities. One year later, she acted as a torchbearer for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Despite her success, Gui is still bothered by the shoe problem.

Abstract

The era of change is now the rule rather than the exception. Organizations are adapting to environmental demands such as an expanding international market, individual work techniques in manufacturing are being replaced by work group techniques because of increasing competition, and the individual himself/herself is experiencing changes in values through the maturation process as well. At mid-career these transitions pose difficult questions for the individual; he/she is concerned with maintaining work competency and managing change related stress. A strategy involving the continuous scanning of organizational, work and individual issues may assist the mid-careerist in answering these questions. Learning, understanding, predicting and acting, and controlling are the elements required in the process of problem-solving and decision-making for the individual as he manages his/her mid-career transition through this myriad of organizational, work, and individual change.

Lust for Life
In January 2018, when Lyu Xiaoning crossed the threshold of La Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo's family home in Coyoacán, Mexico, she was touched by a particular painting named Viva la Vida. For her last work, completed in 1954 fol-lowing complications from an amputated leg, Kahlo chose to paint vivacious red watermelons for their significance to the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2. This holiday sees fam-ily and friends gather in remembrance of those who have gone before them. The artist inscribed the words "Viva la Vida"on the central melon wedge at the bottom of the canvas, which trans-late as "Long live life," just eight days before she died.

On the one hand, she and her husband were strapped for cash as raising a baby turned out to cost a lot more than they had initially expected, and she was earning much less during the leave. On the other hand, her mother-inlaw was temporarily staying with them to help take care of the baby, but this resulted in the occasional bickering over household trivialities.
