The purpose of this study was to examine both the family antecedents and the outcomes of early puberty, with a particular
focus on factors related to family socioeconomic status (SES). The study employed a comprehensive measurement of pubertal
development and longitudinal data from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. The sample (N = 8,440; 49% girls) included four cohorts of children who were followed biennially for 10 years, starting from age 4–11 to
14–21 years. Data were drawn at different years of age from these cohorts of children. Girls whose fathers were unemployed
were more likely to experience early puberty than those whose fathers were employed. For boys, those living with fathers who
had not finished secondary school were more likely to experience early puberty. Early maturing girls tended to engage in smoking
and drinking at an earlier age compared with their peers. These findings provide support for psychosocial acceleration theory
and suggest that different aspects of low family SES may act as a psychosocial stress for early pubertal maturation in boys
versus girls, which may lead to engagement in drinking and smoking at a younger age, at least for girls. 相似文献

The interplay between intrapersonal risk (low self-esteem, perfectionism and body dissatisfaction) and interpersonal protection
(social support) appears relevant for delineating gender-specific pathways that lead to both depressive and eating psychopathology.
The aims of this longitudinal study were to examine gender differences in the levels of depressive symptoms, disordered eating
and the co-occurrence of both problems from preadolescence to mid-adolescence and to identify gender-specific risk and protective
factors of depressive symptoms and disordered eating. A Spanish community-based sample initially comprising 942 early adolescents
(49% females) was assessed at baseline (T1; X
age = 10.8 years) and at 2 and 4-year follow-up (T2 and T3). Gender differences emerged at T2 for disordered eating and at T3
for depressive symptoms and for co-occurring depressive symptoms and disordered eating. Predictors of depressive symptoms
were body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and fear of getting fat, for girls, and body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem,
for boys. Predictors of disordered eating were body dissatisfaction, depressive symptoms, BMI and perfectionism, for girls,
and low social support and BMI, for boys. In addition, for boys only, social support moderated the effect of body dissatisfaction
on depressive symptoms and the effect of depressive symptoms on disordered eating. The hypotheses of the study were partially
supported. Clinical implications are derived regarding the components that should be included in programs for preventing depression

This study examined reciprocal relationships between adolescents’ perceptions of parental nurturance and two types of adolescent
aggressive behaviors (indirect and direct aggression) using a transactional model. Three waves of longitudinal data were drawn
from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. The sample included 1,416 (735 female) adolescents who
were 10- and 11-year-olds at Time 1 and became 14-and 15-year-olds at Time 3. The findings failed to support reciprocal effects,
but confirmed parental effects at different ages for girls and boys. For girls, perceptions of parental nurturance at age
10 were negatively associated with both indirect and direct aggression at age 12. For boys, perceptions of parental nurturance
at age 12 were negatively associated with both aggressive behaviors at age 14. Future research should continue to investigate
reciprocal effects in parent-adolescent relationships to identify developmental periods where the effect of adolescents’ or
their parents’ behavior may be stronger. 相似文献

Although the relation between family relationships and the timing of sexual debut has been the focus of many studies, research
on mediating factors is scarce. This study examines whether low levels of family cohesion result in an earlier onset of romantic
and sexual experiences, and whether the link between family cohesion and an early sexual debut is mediated by early romantic
initiation. A longitudinal sample of 314 adolescent girls and 222 boys, aged 12–17 at Wave 1, completed questionnaires at
three measurement points with three year intervals. The results showed that sexual debut followed romantic initiation for
77% of the participants. For early adolescent females (aged 12–14), high levels of family cohesion resulted in a later sexual
debut and this association was fully mediated by a delay of romantic initiation. Among boys and older girls, timing of romantic
initiation did not mediate the link between family cohesion and timing of sexual initiation. Early adolescent girls who have
negative relationships with their parents turn to romantic relationships for intimacy and support, which subsequently provide
the opportunity for an early sexual debut. Low levels of family cohesion thus primarily precipitate romantic initiation and
sexual initiation appears to be secondary to this process among girls in this age group. 相似文献

This 4-wave longitudinal study examines developmental changes in adolescents’ perceptions of parent–adolescent relationships
by assessing parental support, conflict with parents, and parental power. A total of 951 early adolescents (50.4% boys) and
390 middle adolescents (43.3% boys) participated. Univariate and multivariate growth curve analyses showed that support declined
from early to middle adolescence for boys and girls and increased from middle to late adolescence for girls, while stabilizing
for boys. Conflict was found to temporarily increase during middle adolescence. Parental power (relative power and dominance
of parents) decreased from early to late adolescence. Results indicated that: (1) parent–adolescent relationships become more
egalitarian during adolescence, (2) parents perceived by adolescents as powerful are viewed as supportive, especially in early
adolescence, and (3) perceived conflict with parents is related to but not an impetus for changes in parent–adolescent relationships
towards more equality.

This study of early adolescents from the general population examined the direction of effects adolescents’ depressive symptoms,
aggression, and perceived parental rejection have on one another in a longitudinal study. Over a four-year period, data were
collected yearly from 940 early adolescents (50.6% boys and 49.4% girls) who completed self-report questionnaires of depressive
symptoms, aggressive behaviors, and perceived parental rejection. The longitudinal relationships of adolescent reported depressive
symptoms, aggression, and perceived parental rejection were tested in multi-group structural equation models. The findings
of this study demonstrate that adolescents’ depressive symptoms, aggression, and perceived parental rejection can be viewed
as two unidirectional effects models that work in tandem: adolescents’ depressive symptoms longitudinally predicting perceived
parental rejection and, in turn, perceived parental rejection longitudinally predicting adolescents’ aggression. Additionally,
the strength of these effects diminished as the adolescents grew older and the effects were similar for both adolescent boys
and girls.

Development of depressive tendencies was assessed over a 9-year period in a random sample of 389 Finnish children. Predictors of maternal role satisfaction and hostile child-rearing attitudes, assessed when the children were ages 6 and 9 years, respectively, and a temperament predictor of perceived child difficultness, assessed when the children were age 6 years, were measured using questionnaires designed for this study. Depressive tendencies were assessed by a self-report at age 15 (modification of Beck's Depression Inventory). Using structural equation modeling, we tested a hypothesized model comprising direct as well as mediated effects between the childhood predictor variables and adolescent depressive tendencies. The results indicated support for a similar mediational model in girls and boys. Low maternal role satisfaction and maternal perceptions of child difficultness, measured when children were age 6 years, predicted hostile maternal child-rearing attitudes measured when children were age 9 years, which in turn had a significant direct effect on depressive tendencies among these children during adolescence. The only other direct effect was found solely in girls: Low maternal role satisfaction predicted adolescent depressive tendencies. These results underline the close interplay of child temperament and mothering factors in the development of depressive tendencies in girls and boys. 相似文献

This longitudinal study of recently hospitalized suicidal youth examined parental mental health history in addition to several
indices of adolescent functioning as risk factors for time-to-suicide attempt over a 1-year period. Participants were 352
adolescents (253 girls, 99 boys; ages 13–17 years) who participated in self-report and interview assessments within 1 week
of hospitalization and 6 weeks, 3, 6, and 12 months post-hospitalization. Multivariable proportional hazards regression modeled
time-to-suicide attempt. Results indicate that adolescents were almost twice as likely to make a suicide attempt if they had
at least one biological parent with mental health problems. Risk was also increased for adolescents with baseline histories
of multiple previous suicide attempts, more severe suicidal ideation and more severe functional impairment. Findings suggest
the need to consider the family system when intervening with suicidal youth. 相似文献

Although research indicates that empathy inhibits youth aggression, little is known about the prospective associations between different components of empathy and aggression, as well as whether family and school factors moderate the aforementioned associations in early adolescents. Based on prior research, the current study examined whether empathic concern and perspective taking would contribute to subsequent overt and relational aggression over a 1-year period in middle school. Guided by the social development model, we also examined if positive family relations and school connectedness would differentially moderate the associations between both components of empathy and aggression. Participants were 481 10- to 14-year old students (54 % female; 78 % European American) who completed the first wave of a survey in 6th and 7th grades. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that only for girls did lower levels of empathic concern, not perspective taking, contribute to increases in subsequent overt, not relational, aggression. Although neither positive family relations nor school connectedness played protective roles for girls, results indicated that boys’ reports of positive family relations buffered the negative impact of low empathic concern on both forms of aggression 1 year later. Over and above the two components of empathy, school connectedness also contributed to a decline in boys’ subsequent overt aggression. Recommendations are made to foster family and school relationships among boys, as well as to more heavily consider the role of emotion processes in the study and prevention of early adolescents’ aggression. 相似文献

In this study, we analyzed the relationships among overt and relational victimization and adolescents’ satisfaction with friends.
We also tested the influence of the need for affective relationships with friends. A total of 409 Italian adolescent boys
and girls (age range = 14–16, M = 15.02 years, SD = 2.58) completed a self-report measure of overt and relational victimization, a measure of satisfaction
with friends, and a scale to assess the individual need for affective relationships. A negative association between both forms
of victimization and levels of satisfaction with friends was found. As hypothesized, the need for affective relationships
with friends moderated the relation between relational, but not overt, victimization and satisfaction with friends: Adolescents
who reported more need for affective relationships reported the lowest levels of satisfaction when relationally victimized.

The present study examined the association between body dissatisfaction and adjustment, and the role physical development plays in this association, in an ethnically diverse sample of over 1100 urban, ninth grade boys and girls (M age = 14). More similarities than differences were found across ethnic groups: Caucasian, African American, Latino, Asian, and multiethnic boys reported similar areas of body dissatisfaction, levels of body dissatisfaction, and associations between body dissatisfaction and psychosocial maladjustment. For girls, only mean level differences were found with African American girls reporting lower levels of body dissatisfaction than girls from other ethnic backgrounds. Higher levels of body dissatisfaction predicted more psychological and social maladjustment for both boys and girls. For boys, faster development predicted stronger associations between feeling overweight and peer victimization. Feeling too small only predicted victimization if boys were actually low in physical development. For girls, physical development directly predicted less peer victimization, while perceived faster development predicted more victimization. Thus, it appears that physical development can protect both girls (directly) and boys (buffering against the negative effects of body dissatisfaction) from peer victimization, whereas perceived faster timing of development can exacerbate peer victimization.Adrienne Nishina conducted this research as an NIH postdoctoral fellow in the UCLA Department of Education. The present study examined perceived family and peer influences on body dissatisfaction, weight loss, and binge eating behaviors in adolescents. Three hundred and six girls aged 11 to 17 years (M = 13.66, SD = 1.12) and 297 boys aged 11 to 18 years (M = 13.89, SD = 1.13) completed a questionnaire that examined the direct influence and quality of family and peer relationships on body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Direct influences of family and peers, rather than the quality of these relationships, predicted body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in adolescent boys and girls. Interesting differences were found between girls and boys in the nature of the influences and in the way they were expressed. In particular, parental and peer discussion and encouragement of weight loss predicted disordered eating behaviors in girls, while maternal and peer encouragement predicted binge eating and weight loss behaviors in boys. Fathers played a salient role in the expression of more severe forms of eating problems, while siblings played a small yet significant role in cognitive restraint among girls. The findings highlight gender differences in the importance of significant others in the expression of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in adolescence. 相似文献

This longitudinal study investigates parent and child predictors of adolescents' perceived social support from peers. Adolescents (285) and their parents filled out surveys when students were 11 and 15 years of age. Parent reports of their own social support and child reports of parental support to them, depression, and self-esteem were used as predictors of adolescents' peer social support. Path analyses revealed functional dissimilarity in the predictive model, for boys and girls. For boys and girls, the amount of spousal support parents' reported impacted the amount of parent to child support that children reported. For boys, this relationship impacted their perceptions of peer support indirectly through depression. However, for girls, parents' own supportive relationships directly impacted both their self-esteem and depression, above and beyond parent to child support, which then impacted girls' peer social support. 相似文献

Drawing from an ecological assets framework as well as research and theory on positive youth development, this study examined
the relationship of early adolescents’ satisfaction with life to trait optimism and assets representing the social contexts
in which early adolescents spend most of their time. Self-reports of satisfaction with life, optimism, and ecological assets
in the school (school connectedness), neighborhood (perceived neighborhood support), family (perceived parental support),
and peer group (positive peer relationships) were assessed in a sample of 1,402 4th to 7th graders (47% female) from 25 public
elementary schools. Multilevel modeling (MLM) was conducted to analyze the variability in life satisfaction both at the individual
and the school level. As hypothesized, adding optimism and the dimensions representing the ecology of early adolescence to
the model significantly reduced the variability in life satisfaction at both levels of analysis. Both personal (optimism)
and all of the ecological assets significantly and positively predicted early adolescents’ life satisfaction. The results
suggest the theoretical and practical utility of an assets approach for understanding life satisfaction in early adolescence. 相似文献

The study investigated the relationships between substance use, body image, and peer influence among Finnish adolescents. The participants (N=488, 240 boys and 248 girls), were eighth-grade high school students. The data were gathered using a questionnaire. In addition to background information, the study covered risk behaviors frequency, body satisfaction, and peer relationships. The results indicated that the levels of body satisfaction among the adolescent girls studied were lower than those among the adolescent boys. It was found that the girls engaged in more discussion with peers than the boys concerning both intimate and general matters. Moreover, having an intimate relationship with one's peers was associated with a greater tendency to drink purely in order to get drunk. However, a slightly more distant relationship with friends was associated with a greater risk for smoking. In general, dissatisfaction with one's physical appearance seemed to relate to substance use. By highlighting the relationships between adolescents’ body image, substance use, and peer influence the study gives pointers for further research, and may be suggestive in terms of the kinds of social policies that ought to be pursued in the future.MA (Educational Sciences) from the University of Turku. This panel study investigated the directionality of relations between adolescents’ perceptions of their parents’ psychological
control and adolescents’ self-reported internalizing and aggressive (physical and relational) behaviors. Data were collected
from a random, community sample of 530 adolescents ages 12–19 years old at time 1, and again 2 years later. Hierarchical regression
analyses found that adolescents’ perceptions of parents’ psychological control at baseline did not predict changes in adolescents’
internalizing and aggressive behaviors over 2 years but higher internalizing behavior and physical aggression at time 1 predicted
increases in adolescents’ estimates of their mothers’ and fathers’ psychologically controlling behaviors. Higher relational
aggression reported by adolescents at time 1 predicted increases in their perceptions of mothers as psychologically controlling.
This study provides more evidence for child effects on adolescents’ ratings of their parents’ psychological control than for
parent effects of perceived psychological control on adolescents’ behavior.

In recent discussions regarding concerns about the academic achievement of US students, educational policy makers have suggested
the implementation of certain teacher policies. To address the limited empirical research on the putative educational impact
of such policies, this study used multilevel structural equation models to investigate the longitudinal associations between
teacher evaluation and reward policies, and student mathematics achievement and dropout with a national sample of students
(n = 7,779) attending one of 431 public high schools. The student sample included an equal number of boys and girls averaging
16 years of age, and included a White (53%) majority. This study examined whether associations between teacher policies and
student achievement were mediated by the teacher–student relationship climate. Results of this study were threefold. First,
teacher evaluation policies that allowed students to evaluate their teachers were associated with more positive student reports
of the classroom teaching climate. Second, schools with teacher reward policies that included assigning higher performing
teachers with higher performing students had a negative association with student perceptions of the teaching climate. Lastly,
schools with better student perceptions of the teaching climate were associated with lower student dropout rates by students’
senior year. These findings are discussed in light of their educational policy implications. 相似文献

An accumulation of research evidence suggests that early pubertal timing plays a significant role in girls’ behavioral and
emotional problems. If early pubertal timing is a problematic event, then early developing Black girls should manifest evidence
of this crisis because they tend to be the earliest to develop compared to other girls from different racial and ethnic groups.
Given the inconsistent findings among studies using samples of Black girls, the present study examined the independent influence
of perceived pubertal timing and age of menarche on externalizing behaviors and depressive symptoms in a nationally representative
sample of Black girls (412 African American and 195 Caribbean Black; M = 15 years). Path analysis results indicated that perceived pubertal timing effects on externalizing behaviors were moderated
by ethnic subgroup. Caribbean Black girls’ who perceived their development to be early engaged in more externalizing behaviors
than Caribbean Black girls’ who perceived their development to be either on-time or late. Age of menarche did not significantly
predict Black girls’ externalizing behaviors and depressive symptoms. The onset of menarche does not appear to be an important
predictor of Black girls’ symptoms of externalizing behavior and depression. These findings suggest ethnic subgroup and perceived
pubertal timing are promising factors for better understanding the adverse effects of early perceived pubertal timing among

This study examined individual differences in the relations among preadolescents' sociomoral understanding and self-understanding, teacher and peer ratings of school behavior. Two hundred and thirty-nine preadolescents (M = 11.9 years; 127 girls and 112 boys) completed tasks concerning perceptions of competence, vocabulary, and peer-rated social competence. Students also participated in a story-telling interview that assessed sociomoral understanding and self-understanding. Results indicated links between various self-concept dimensions and (a) teacher ratings of academic competence, peer aggression (both physical and relational), and prosocial behavior; and (b) general vocabulary ability. Both sociomoral understanding and self-understanding were found to be linked to perceived academic competence for boys only. Independent of vocabulary ability, girls scored higher than boys on perceived behavioral conduct, teacher ratings of relational aggression (Grade 6 only), and self-understanding, particularly a sense of self-agency. Content analysis showed that girls were more likely than boys to refer to their parents when discussing their sense of self-agency. Independent of vocabulary ability, boys scored marginally higher than girls on sociomoral understanding. Results are discussed in terms of curricular implications for inter- and intrapersonal understandings. 相似文献

Research on the academic adjustment of immigrant adolescents has been predominately conducted in large cities among established
migration areas. To broaden the field’s restricted focus, data from 172 (58% female) Asian American adolescents who reside
within a non-traditional or emerging immigrant community in the Southeastern US were used to examine gender differences in
academic adjustment as well as school, family, and cultural variables as potential mediators of gender differences found.
Results suggest that girls report significantly higher educational goals, intrinsic academic motivation, and utility value
of school compared to boys. These gender differences are statistically mediated by ethnic exploration and family processes,
most prominently, family respect. School connectedness and perceived discrimination are also associated with academic adjustment
at the bivariate level, suggesting that academic success may be best promoted if multiple domains of influence can be targeted. 相似文献
