This study uses two waves of data to examine the relationships among patterns of racial socialization experiences and racial
identity in a sample of 358 African American adolescents (60% female and 40% male). Using latent class analyses, we identified
three patterns of adolescent-reported racial socialization experiences: High Positive, Moderate Positive, and Low Frequency.
Adolescent-reported racial socialization experiences at Wave 1 were associated with Wave 2 adolescent racial identity approximately
one year later. Specifically, High Positive and Low Frequency racial socialization were associated with racial centrality,
assimilationist ideology, and nationalist ideology. These findings suggest that various patterns of racial socialization practices
play an important role in the developing significance and meaning that African American adolescents ascribe to race.

Development and Validation of the Adolescent Racial and Ethnic Socialization Scale (ARESS) in African American Families 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Racial and ethnic socialization are an integral part of African American parenting strategies. Varied conceptualizations and
operationalizations of racial and ethnic socialization exist within the literature with limited evidence of the validity of
existing measures. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive definition of racial and ethnic socialization and
to validate a new measure termed the Adolescent Racial and Ethnic Socialization Scale (ARESS). Using Confirmatory Factor Analysis
(CFA), findings from 218 African American adolescents (grades 9–12) support the multidimensional nature of racial and ethnic
socialization. Results also indicate that racial and ethnic socialization are distinct constructs reflecting the utility of
this instrument for African American youth.

Previous research has explored how differential youth outcomes are associated with racial socialization and parenting style
individually, but very little work has examined whether democratic-involved parenting style bolsters the positive link between
racial messages and adolescent outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine mothers’ use of democratic-involved parenting
as a moderator of the association between racial socialization (e.g., racial pride, racial barrier, and self-worth messages)
and youth engagement. The types of engagement explored were attitudes toward class work and persistence on task. Ninety-four
African American youth (ages 11–14) reported on maternal style and socialization. As predicted, racial barrier socialization
was positively associated with engagement among adolescents who perceived their mothers to provide more involvement coupled
with opportunities for their teens to make decisions. In contrast, barrier socialization and engagement were negatively associated
among adolescents who viewed their mothers as low in democratic-involved parenting. Implications for adolescent engagement
and for research on racial socialization and democratic-involved parenting style are discussed.

The current study examined the impact of racial discrimination stress on internalizing symptoms and coping strategies in a
sample of 268 African American early adolescents (mean age = 12.90; 56% female) from low-income communities. Information about
discrimination stress, coping, and internalizing symptoms was obtained via adolescents’ self-report. It was predicted that
discrimination stress would be positively associated with depression and anxiety, as well as culturally-specific coping. Finally,
culturally-relevant coping and mainstream coping were examined as moderators of the association between discrimination stress
and internalizing symptoms. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that discrimination stress was positively associated
with depression and anxiety and predicted culturally-relevant coping while controlling for mainstream coping. Communalistic
coping moderated the association between discrimination and anxiety, but demonstrated a vulnerability function by increasing
anxiety at high levels of discrimination. The results highlight the salience of racial discrimination for African American
adolescents and the importance of considering culturally-specific coping behaviors.

Prior research demonstrates negative consequences of racism, however, little is known about community, parenting, and intrapersonal
mechanisms that protect youth. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study illuminated linkages between positive and negative
contextual influences on rural African American adolescent outcomes. Quantitative results provide support for Structural Ecosystems
Theory, in that the influence of discrimination and collective socialization on adolescent outcomes was mediated by racial
socialization and positive parenting. Parenting and community influences contributed to adolescent racial identity and self
image, which protected against common negative responses to racism; including academic underachievement, succumbing to peer
pressure, and aggressive tendencies. Qualitative results indicate that current measures of discrimination may underestimate
adolescents’ experiences. Adolescents reported racist experiences in the domains of school, peers, and with the police (males
only). Moreover, qualitative findings echoed and expanded quantitative results with respect to the importance of the protective
nature of parents and communities.

This study examined the relationship of racial and ethnic socialization and academic achievement in a sample of 218 African
American adolescents (grades 9–12; 52% girls) attending a public high school in the northeastern United States. Researchers
were particularly interested in whether adolescent gender moderated the relationship between racial and ethnic socialization
and academic grades. Results indicated that aspects of ethnic socialization, African American cultural values and African
American heritage were linked to adolescent grades. Additionally, adolescent gender was found to moderate the association
between these socialization variables and grades. The findings also suggest that socialization provided by paternal caregivers
around African American cultural values and African American heritage may have differential effects for academic grades than
the socialization messages provided by maternal caregivers. Information generated from this study broadens the understanding
of socialization factors that can facilitate positive academic outcomes in African American youth and has practical implications
for parents and educators.

Increasingly, researchers have found relationships between a strong, positive sense of racial identity and academic achievement
among African American youth. Less attention, however, has been given to the roles and functions of racial identity among
youth experiencing different social and economic contexts. Using hierarchical linear modeling, the authors examined the relationship
of racial identity to academic outcomes, taking into account neighborhood-level factors. The sample consisted of 564 African
American eighth-graders (56% male). The authors found that neighborhood characteristics and racial identity related positively
to academic outcomes, but that some relationships were different across neighborhood types. For instance, in neighborhoods
low in economic opportunity, high pride was associated with a higher GPA, but in more advantaged neighborhoods, high pride
was associated with a lower GPA. The authors discuss the need to take youth’s contexts into account in order to understand
how racial identity is active in the lives of African American youth.

The present study examined contextual influences on the relationship between racial discrimination (individual, cultural,
and collective/institutional) and psychological well-being. Two hundred and fifty two African American adolescents (46% male
and 54% female, average age = 16) completed measures of racial discrimination, self-esteem, depressive symptoms and life satisfaction.
Archival information regarding the racial/ethnic composition of the participants’ neighborhoods and schools was used and increased
school diversity was linked to increased perceptions of cultural discrimination. Regardless of school and neighborhood diversity,
high perceptions of collective/institutional discrimination were linked to lower self-esteem for students in high diversity
settings. Further, high levels of collective/institutional discrimination were associated with lower life satisfaction for
African American youth in low diversity settings.

This study examined the link between rejection sensitivity, self-silencing behaviors, and depressive symptomatology among adolescent dating couples. Self-silencing was hypothesized to be the process mediating the association between rejection sensitivity and depressive symptoms. Our sample included 211 couples between 14 and 21 who were dating at least 4 weeks. Results indicated that dating adolescents who were sensitive to rejection reported more depressive symptomatology and higher levels of self-silencing behaviors within their romantic relationship compared to dating adolescents who were not so sensitive to rejection. Self-silencing was identified as a partial mediator of the association between rejection sensitivity and depressive symptomatology among dating adolescents. Clinical implications in light of these findings are discussed.

This paper examines the way that women’s relationship to peace is constructed in international institutions and international
law. It identifies a set of claims about women and peace that are typically made and considers these in light of women’s experience
in the conflicts in Bougainville, East Timor and the Solomon Islands.

Academic Achievement and Problem Behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander American Adolescents 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Yoonsun Choi 《Journal of youth and adolescence》2007,36(4):403-415
Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study tests whether the relationship between academic
achievement and problem behaviors is the same across racial and ethnic groups. Some have suggested that academic achievement
may be a weaker predictor of problem behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander American (API) youth; that they can have high
grades but still exhibit problem behaviors. This study finds that academic performance is a significant predictor of aggressive
and nonaggressive delinquent offenses, gang initiation, sexual behaviors, and substance use, and that the relationship generally
does not vary by race and ethnicity. Thus, there is little evidence that API youth are high achievers who are also engaging
significantly in problem behaviors. The existing perceptions of API youth may be largely based on stereotype and ambivalence.

Adolescent Children of Adolescent Mothers: The Impact of Family Functioning on Trajectories of Development 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
V. Susan Dahinten Jennifer D. Shapka J. Douglas Willms 《Journal of youth and adolescence》2007,36(2):195-212
This study drew on four cycles of longitudinal data from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth to
examine the academic and behavioural trajectories of youth between 10 and 15 years of age as a function of maternal age at
childbearing. The analyses controlled for several family characteristics and examined the mediating effects of three family
functioning variables (maternal depression, and nurturing and rejecting parenting behaviours). Maternal age was related to
academic competency in math (standardized Math scores), externalizing disorders (Property Offences, Hyperactivity-Inattention),
and internalizing disorders (Anxiety-Emotional Disorder). After accounting for family characteristics, the children of the
young and older teen mothers retained their disadvantage in Math scores and Property Offences, respectively, whereas the children
of older mothers lost the advantages that they had exhibited at age 10 (for Property Offences, the benefits were mediated
through family functioning). These results have implications for future research and for the development of policy and programming
targeting the healthy development of youth.

In this longitudinal study, we examined whether certain types of stressful events and how individuals respond to these events
would explain gender differences in depressive symptoms among adolescents. We hypothesized that certain stressful events would
mediate the relationship between gender and depressive symptoms. We also hypothesized that individual differences in emotional
reactivity would impact part of this relationship. Lastly, we examined whether gender differences in early childhood temperament
might explain gender differences in emotional reactivity in adolescence. We examined these hypotheses in a sample of 315 adolescents
(51% females; 93% Caucasian; 3% African–American; and 1% each Hispanic, Asian–American, and Native American) participating
in a longitudinal study of child development since birth. We used multiple regression and constrained nonlinear regression
to analyze the data. Results indicated that stressful events significantly mediated gender differences in depression, and
that individual differences in emotional reactivity to these stressors significantly moderated the relationship between stress
and depression. We also observed significant gender differences in emotional reactivity to these stressors; temperamental
differences in withdrawal negativity in infancy were marginally significant in mediating gender differences in emotional reactivity
to stress in adolescence.

Internalization of the thin body ideal is considered by many to account for the relationship between media exposure and disordered eating among girls and young women, but almost all supporting research has employed adolescent and adult samples. Using longitudinal panel survey data collected from 257 preadolescent girls at 2 points in time 1 year apart, we tested relationships between self-reported television and magazine exposure at wave 1 and current (prepubescent) and future (postpubescent) body ideals and disordered eating at wave 2. Controlling age, race, perceived body size, and body ideals and disordered eating measured at wave 1, television viewing at wave 1 predicted increased disordered eating and a thinner postpubescent body ideal at wave 2. In contrast, none of the media variables predicted a thinner prepubescent body ideal at wave 2. These findings suggest that the thin-ideal internalization construct needs refinement to enhance its developmental sensitivity.

Unlikely Fissures and Uneasy Resonances: Lesbian Co-mothers,Surrogate Parenthood and Fathers’ Rights
Jenni Millbank 《Feminist Legal Studies》2008,16(2):141-167
This article explores commonalities between parental claims for lesbian co-mothers and other contexts in which intention is
a key aspect to family formation for (mostly) heterosexual families: in particular, surrogacy and pre-birth disputes over
embryos. Through a series of case studies drawn from recent reproductive controversies, the paper uses the lens of empathy
to argue for social or non-genetic modes of parenthood connecting lesbian mothers and other ‘reproductive outsiders’.

Little attention has been paid to the role of peer social capital in the school context, especially as a predictor of adolescents’
academic outcomes. This study uses a nationally representative (N = 13,738, female = 51%), longitudinal sample and multilevel models to examine how peer networks impact educational achievement
and attainment. Results reveal that, in addition to those factors typically associated with academic outcomes (e.g., school
composition), two individual-level peer network measures, SES and heterogeneity, had significant effects. Although educational
attainment was generally worse in low SES schools, for all ethnic groups higher attainment was associated with attending schools
with higher concentrations of minority students. At the individual level, however, membership in integrated peer networks
was negatively related to high school graduation for Asians, Latinos, and non-Hispanic whites, and to GPA for Asians and Latinos,
as only African-American achievement increased in more racially/ethnically heterogeneous peer networks. Our results suggest
that co-ethnic and co-racial peer friendship networks should not be viewed as obstacles to the educational accomplishments
of today’s youth. In fact, in many cases the opposite was true, as results generally support the ethnic social capital hypothesis
while providing little corroboration for oppositional culture theory. Results also suggest that co-racial and co-ethnic ties
may mediate the negative effects of school choice, or more specifically of between-school socioeconomic segregation. Consequently,
we conclude that school policies aimed at socioeconomic desegregation are likely to beneficially affect the academic outcomes
of all race/ethnic groups.

This study explored factors that may be associated with early initiation of sexual activity among adolescents. Using the cumulative
risk model, we hypothesized that as exposure to risk factors increases, so does the likelihood of early sexual debut. A sample
of 273 (53% girls, 90% European American) adolescents was followed longitudinally from age 13 to 15. The results indicate
that, for girls, increased television viewing, low self-esteem, poor parental relationships, living in a non-intact household,
higher levels of externalizing behavior (ADHD symptomology), low academic achievement, and parents with low education levels
were associated with earlier sexual debut. For boys, advanced pubertal development, increased television viewing, higher rates
of externalizing behaviors (ADHD and ODD symptoms), and poor parental relationships were associated with earlier sexual debut.
As hypothesized, predictive power increases with the accumulation of these risks; girls are 1.56 times more likely to become
sexually active with an increase of only one risk and boys are 1.90 times more likely.

There is considerable disagreement as to whether any gender differences on the bench are symbolic, substantive, or both. This
paper, based on never-before published surveys and personal interviews conducted in the early 1980s, contributes to that discussion
by describing what women appointed to the federal bench by President Carter between 1976 and 1980 had to say about gender
differences in their first years in office. I conclude that these early experiences and comments by women on the bench are
still relevant today and presage much of the research on judicial gender which has followed.

Within an ethnically diverse sample of young adults (n = 223, 26% Latin American, 14% Asian American, 32% Filipino American, 28% European American), average levels of ethnic identity
was found to vary significantly across different relational contexts. Regardless of ethnicity, young adults reported highest
levels of ethnic exploration and ethnic belonging with parents, followed by same-ethnic peers, then different-ethnic peers.
Significantly greater variation between relational contexts generally was found for ethnic exploration compared to ethnic
belonging. Greater variation in ethnic identity, particularly between same-ethnic and different-ethnic contexts was associated
with lower self-esteem, positive affect, relational competence, and higher negative affect, though these liabilities were
only found for European American youth. The discussion emphasizes the importance of examining ethnic identity as a dynamic
construct that can vary as a function of relationships, and proposes directions for future research.

This study tested associations between adolescent perceptions of interparental conflict, adolescent attachment security with parents, and adolescent marital expectations and romantic experiences. Participants were 96 early adolescent females from 2 parent families. Insecurity was examined as a mediator of the association between negative perceptions of parental conflict and romantic outcomes. Results supported the mediation model in which adolescents' negative perceptions of parental conflict was associated with insecure attachment with parents, which was in turn associated with negative marital expectations and romantic experiences. Implications for understanding how parent-adolescent and interparental variables influence adolescent marital expectations and romantic experiences are discussed.
