O.D. at the U.N.: facilitating global change

Expanding our OD horizons to the global level means not only carrying abroad what we know, but also being sensitive to diverse clients who may operate from cultural assumptions very different from our own. Both formal and informal change is possible at international gatherings if practitioners follow a few key guidelines. Seven such observations are discussed by the author, who includes a discussion of “expert” and “process” consultation methods. The article concludes that OD skills are needed in the international arena, but are often unappreciated or unknown. Hence, OD professionals must be educators in addition to their interpersonal practice of superior communication skills.

OD is only beginning to stretch its full imaginative power and practice to the international arena, as is reflected in my experiences at a conference of 122 countries held at the United Nations in Vienna, Austria. The conference was the first convening of nations to discuss the topic of old age in light of the policy and organizational implications of global demographic change.

EDWARD O. WILSON'S THEORY OF CONSILIENCE: A HERMENEUTICAL CRITIQUE

ABSTRACT

This paper is a hermeneutical critique of Edward O. Wilson's theory of consilience which attempts to understand “human nature” and unify all knowledge under the aegis of biology and genetics. His pansophic endeavor based on “gene-culture coevolution” is deeply and one-sidedly embedded in genetics. By reducing the human order merely to the organic and ultimately to the physical, furthermore, Wilson's theory is not only a specimen of physicalism whose paradigmatic model is physics but also is fundamentally rooted in a mechanistic or materialistic ontology. Hermeneutics is introduced and proposed here as the alternative to Wilson's reductionistic theory of consilience. It is capable of untying the Gordian knot of Wilson's scientism which has a monochromatic and short leash on human culture and society because both the social and natural sciences are socio-cultural phenomena and products. Hermeneutical inquiry becomes an indispensable tool for learning and teaching the social sciences in particular because above all it is erected in the conception of language as the edifice of human specificity.

英国青少年犯罪预防的经验

笔者在英国进行了为期半年公共管理专业学习,特别是到司法行政机构进行岗位实习,了解司法体系运作的全面状况。在学习与实践中,对英国预防未成年人犯罪工作给予了重点关注,现结合我国实际,就如何借鉴他国经验,加强我国青少年犯罪预防工作,谈点粗浅的想法。     

《德意志意识形态》中的"交往"概念新论

"交往"是<德意志意识形态>一书中非常重要的一个概念;学界目前的研究缺乏对"交往"含义的具体分析;本文分析了"交往"具有三层含义和它们的相互关系,在此基础上讨论了"交往关系"范畴与"生产关系"范畴之间的关系,探讨了"交往"这一概念在唯物史观形成过程中的作用.     

英国伯明翰市预防青少年违法犯罪的特殊教育体系及作用

英国伯明翰市的特殊教育的目的和功能，与我国的工读教育是基本相同的，旨在教育转化有不良行为和严重不良行为的青少年学生，预防青少年违法犯罪。虽然伯明翰特殊教育的诞生只有20多年的历史，却已经形成了一个较为完善的体系，由“工读学校”和散布全市的九个“学生行为帮扶中心”一起构成了预防肯少年违法犯罪的网络运作机制，起到了应有的积极作用。而我国的工读教育已经有50多年的历史，教育和挽救了数以万计的违法犯罪的青少年，但体系还不够完善，工读学校的运作遇到了重重困难。“他山之石，可以攻玉。”伯明翰的特殊教育对我国的工读教育有很大的借鉴意义。     

"No Soft Touch": Romani Migration to the U.K. at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century

This paper discusses Romani migration to the U.K. from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in the closing years of the twentieth century, with particular reference to the Czech and Slovak Republics. These case studies were chosen to illustrate wider points because they are the best documented, particularly with regard to illuminating sociological research on motivations for migration. Comparisons with similar migration to Canada shed further light on the situation. Refugees from these CEE countries have met a hostile reception in the U.K. It is argued here, however, that popular ignorance alone does not provide a sufficient explanation for this hostility: rather, the condemnation of Romani asylum seekers is seen as an expression of a deep-rooted and long-standing anxiety in the U.K. about immigration and its potential consequences. In spite of their relatively insignificant numbers, Roma have acted as convenient motifs in this ongoing discourse, being assigned a prominent symbolic role at a time of heightened political sensitivity.     

“K＋VP”句式浅析

明清以来的现代方言中存在着一种有别于普通话的特殊句式，即“K＋VP”句式，对这种句式的讨论仍存在很大的空间和价值。本文把此句式归入早期反问句发展凝固为表疑问的疑问句的结果，并认为，现代方言区中，江淮地区为此句式的发源地。汉语方言现象的探讨，可以为汉语方言语法史的研究提供类似于“活”的材料。
