Links between living in a partner-violent home and subsequent aggressive and antisocial behavior are suggested by the “cycle
of violence” hypothesis derived from social learning theory. Although there is some empirical support, to date, findings have
been generally limited to cross-sectional studies predominantly of young children, or retrospective studies of adults. We
address this issue with prospective data from the Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS), an ongoing longitudinal investigation
of the development of antisocial behavior in a community sample of 1,000 urban youth followed from age 14 to adulthood. The
original panel included 68% African American, 17% Hispanic, and 15% White participants, and was 72.9% male, and 27.1% female.
Measures come from a combination of sources including interviews with parents, interviews with youth, and official records.
We test the general hypothesis that there is a relationship between living in partner-violent homes during adolescence, and
later antisocial behavior and relationship violence. Employing logistic regression and controlling for related covariates,
including child physical abuse, we find a significant relationship between exposure to parental violence and adolescent conduct
problems. The relationship between exposure to parental violence and measures of antisocial behavior and relationship aggression
dissipates in early adulthood, however, exposure to severe parental violence is significantly related to early adulthood violent
crime, and intimate partner violence. Our results suggest that exposure to severe parental violence during adolescence is
indeed consequential for violent interactions in adulthood.

A growing body of research has linked exposure to violence to violent behavior, but few studies have examined the impact of the timing of exposure to violence on violent behavior among inner city, minority youth. Theoretical insights derived from developmental psychology and psychopathology (DPP) and Agnew’s general strain theory (GST) give contrasting accounts of whether exposure to violence has a short term or long term impact on violent behavior. Five waves of data collected from African American youth living in twelve high poverty inner city neighborhoods was used to examine how the timing of exposure to violence over a four year time period impacts year five violent behavior. Multivariate results support GST’s contention that more proximal exposure to violence has a larger impact on violent behavior. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings for adolescent development in high poverty settings are discussed.

The current study extended previous research with adults and boys to girls in the juvenile justice system (N = 122; M = 16.7; SD = 1.3). Using a longitudinal research design, neighborhood disadvantage and exposure to violence (i.e., physical abuse by
parents, physical abuse by peers, and witnessing violence) were assessed during incarceration. These risk factors were used
to predict violent and delinquent behavior post-release. Furthermore, race specific pathways were examined to determine if
the impact of these risk factors varied among Black (n = 69) and White girls (n = 53). Results indicated that Black girls were more likely than White girls to live in disadvantaged neighborhoods, but both
reported similar levels of exposure to violence and self-report of antisocial behavior. Physical abuse by parents, time at
risk, and age were related to violent behavior, while witnessing violence and time at risk were related to delinquent behavior.
Multiple group analyses indicated the existence of race specific pathways. Specifically, physical abuse by parents was related
to violent behavior for White girls while witnessing violence was related to violent and delinquent behaviors for Black girls.
Results suggest that contextual processes play an important role in predicting antisocial behavior for Black girls.

This study examines individual and partner characteristics associated with the perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV)
in young adult relationships with opposite sex partners. Using data from Waves 1 and 3 of the National Longitudinal Study
of Adolescent Health, this study examined 1,275 young adults’ heterosexual romantic relationships. Controlling for the effects
of family and school correlates measured in adolescence, we examined the extent to which participants’ general violent behavior
in young adulthood and their partners’ use of violence in their relationship influence participants’ IPV perpetration. We
found that both having general violent tendencies and being a target of violence in a relationship influenced one’s likelihood
of young adults perpetrating IPV. We also tested whether the overall influence of participants’ general violent behavior on
IPV perpetration was moderated by their partners’ use of violence in the relationship. We found that young women’s greatest
expression of violent tendencies emerged when in relationships with violent men; yet, when partnered with non-violent men,
young women’s own violent tendencies did not lead to IPV. We found little evidence for the interactive effect for young men
in the study. The lack of a significant interaction in the model indicated that young men’s general aggression was not conditioned
on their partners’ use of physical aggression in their relationships.

Research examining the relationship between internalizing symptoms and antisocial behaviors has generally been cross-sectional
in design. Thus, although extant data have substantiated a strong correlation between internalizing symptoms and antisocial
behaviors, few studies have focused on describing the nature of the co-occurrence over time. This study examined the relation
between growth in internalizing symptoms and longitudinal patterns of antisocial behavior in a sample of 283 inner-city males
and their caregivers assessed as part of a longitudinal developmental risk study. Participants were assessed annually in four
waves. Non-offenders and escalating offenders had lower levels of internalizing problems at wave 1 than did chronic minor
and serious-chronic-violent offenders. Results revealed a developmental trend of decreasing internalizing problems across
study years for most participants, as would be expected, with adolescents participating in serious, chronic, and violent patterns
of antisocial behavior displaying greater internalizing problems than those participating in stable patterns of less serious
or no antisocial behavior. Further, when there was escalation of seriousness and frequency of antisocial behavior, there also
was increased internalizing problems relative to non-escalating juveniles. Results are discussed in the context of developmental
psychopathology.

Same-sex Versus Other-sex Best Friendship in Early Adolescence: Longitudinal Predictors of Antisocial Behavior Throughout Adolescence 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examines the relationship between having other-sex versus same-sex best friends and antisocial behavior throughout
early adolescence. Participants (N = 955) were recruited in 6th grade and followed longitudinally through 7th, 8th, and 11th grades. Participants were 58% ethnically
diverse youth and 48% girls. Results indicate that the frequency of other-sex best friendship remained stable from 6th to
7th grade but significantly increased from 8th to 11th grade. Higher rates of concurrent antisocial behavior were related
to having other-sex best friends in 6th grade but not in 7th grade. In 8th grade, there was an interaction between friendship
and the sex of friends. Boys with only same-sex best friends and girls with other-sex best friends endorsed higher rates of
antisocial behavior. Having other-sex best friends predicted antisocial behavior from 6th to 7th grade and 8th to 11th grade,
especially for girls. Implications for the development of early adolescent friendship and antisocial behavior are discussed.

Prospective associations between violent victimization, the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship, and the subsequent
onset of violent aggression were examined. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), participants
were divided into violent and non-violent cohorts based on whether they had committed an act of violence prior to Wave 1.
Results showed that violent victimization at Wave 1 predicted the onset of violent aggression at Wave 2 for adolescents who
were non-violent at baseline. Earlier violent victimization, however, had no effect on aggression trajectories for baseline
violent adolescents. Parent-adolescent relations functioned as a protective buffer, such that violently victimized adolescents
who reported high quality relationships with parents were less likely to be involved in violent aggression at Wave 2. Subsequent
gender interaction analyses revealed that while the buffering effect was evident for males, parent-adolescent relations did
not protect females from the onset of aggressive behaviors. Findings are evaluated in light of social learning and cycle of
violence theories that highlight the role of violent victimization among adolescents.

We examine the extent to which parental antisocial behavior is related to child antisocial behavior and, if it is, the extent
to which the effect is mediated by parental stressors and by parenting behaviors. In particular, we examine two sources of
stress–depressive symptoms and exposure to negative life events. The study is based on data from the Rochester Intergenerational
Study, a prospective multi-generation panel study. The parent sample is 73% male and 27% female and predominantly African
American (69%); the child sample consists of each parent’s oldest biological child. We find significant levels of intergenerational
continuity in antisocial behavior for mothers and for fathers who live with or supervise their child, but not for fathers
who have low levels of contact with their child. Results of structural equation models of mediating pathways are similar for
mothers and for supervisory fathers. Of the two stressors we examine, depressive symptoms appears to be the more consistent
mediator. It, both directly and indirectly via its impact on parenting behaviors, influences the child’s early onset of antisocial
behavior. The results imply that childhood antisocial behavior has deep roots, extending back to the parent’s adolescent development.

The goal of the study was to examine whether social motives (social mimicry, mutual attraction, and unreciprocated attraction)
predict changes in antisocial behavior across middle school grades. The 2,003 initial participants (55% girls) were drawn
from a larger longitudinal study of urban public school students: 44% Latino, 26% African-American, 10% Asian, 9% Caucasian,
and 11% multiracial. Analyses of peer nominations and teacher-rated behavior included five waves of data between the fall
of sixth grade and the spring of eighth grade (n = 1,260–1,347 for longitudinal analyses). Supporting the social mimicry hypothesis, students who associated peer-directed
aggression with high social status in the beginning of middle school engaged in elevated levels of antisocial conduct during
the second year in the new school. Additionally, unreciprocated attraction toward peers who bully others in the beginning
of middle school was related to increased antisocial behavior in the last year of middle school. No support was obtained for
the mutual attraction hypothesis. The findings provide insights about possible social motives underlying susceptibility to
negative peer influence.

Consistent with the view that adolescent relationships are established in the context of important characteristics of their
social networks, we examined the effects of adolescents’ experiences of parenting (psychological control and positive monitoring)
and of peer aggression and victimization, on their self reports of dating victimization and aggression. We also examined the
effects of individual differences in emotional and behavioral problems. We used questionnaire data from a population-based
sample of youth 12–18 years old who were in dating relationships (n = 149). Parental monitoring emerged as a protective factor in reducing both dating victimization and relational aggression.
Our findings also point to a significant transfer of aggression in peer relationships to relational aggression in dating relationships.

This study investigated the interrelationships among trauma exposure, PTSD, and mental health problems in a sample of 289
adolescents (199 male, 90 female) detained in a juvenile correctional facility. Mean differences were found in that females
scored higher than males on measures of interpersonal trauma exposure and symptoms of both simple and complex PTSD. Females
also endorsed more mental health problems in the areas of depression/anxiety, somatic complaints, and suicidal ideation. For
all youth, trauma exposure, PTSD, and mental health problems were correlated. Results of structural equation modeling were
consistent with the hypothesis that PTSD mediates the relationship between interpersonal trauma and mental health problems
for all youth, although the results were stronger for females.

Several studies have indicated that an early onset of delinquent and problem behaviors is associated with a greater risk of
subsequent behavioral and mental health problems. This study builds on that literature by examining histories of behavior
problems in relation to indicators of thriving and precocious behavior during late adolescence. Using longitudinal data from
289 high-risk adolescents, participants were classified according to their problem behavior histories at ages 15 and 19. Findings
indicated that although some adolescents experienced decline over time in their overt behavior problems, those youth showed
fewer indicators of thriving when compared to adolescents with no history of behavior problems. Youth with an earlier onset
of behavior problems also evinced an increased risk for precocious behavior. Gender differences and implications for prevention
through youth development programming are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to extend the current literature on forms (i.e., physical and relational) and functions (i.e.,
proactive and reactive) of participants’ cognitions and beliefs about aggressive behavior. Participants included an ethnically
diverse group of emerging adults (N = 165; M = 19.05 years; SD = 1.55) and completed a battery of self-report instruments. Gender differences for subtypes of physical
aggression were found. Impulsivity was associated with all subtypes of aggression. Results showed that reactive physical aggression
was uniquely associated with hostile attribution biases for instrumental provocation situations. Reactive relational aggression
was uniquely associated with hostile attribution biases for relational provocation scenarios. Findings indicated links between
self-reported subtypes of aggressive behavior and normative beliefs of aggression. Ways in which this study extends the extant
literature are discussed.

This study investigated the relationship between social information processing (SIP) and both relational and overt, physical
aggression in a longitudinally-followed sample of 228 adolescent girls (ages 11–18; 140 with ADHD and 88 comparison girls).
During childhood, girls participated in naturalistic summer camps where peer rejection, overt physical aggression, and relational
aggression were assessed via multiple informants and methods. Approximately 4.5 years later, these girls participated in follow-up
assessments during which they completed a commonly-used vignette procedure to assess SIP; overt and relational aggression
were again assessed through multiple informants. Correlations between (a) overt and relational aggression and (b) maladaptive
SIP were modest in this female adolescent sample. However, relationships between aggression and SIP were stronger for the
comparison girls than for the girls with ADHD. The relevance of SIP models for adolescent girls and clinical implications
of findings are discussed.

Little is known about social cognition regarding conflict in romantic relationships during late adolescence. The current study
examined beliefs, social goals, and behavioral strategies for conflict in romantic relationships and their associations with
relationship quality among a sample of 494 college students. Two dimensions of conflict beliefs, constructive and destructive,
were identified. Constructive conflict beliefs were associated with relationship-oriented conflict goals and negotiation strategies
during romantic conflict. Destructive conflict beliefs were associated with conflict goals focused on revenge or individual
needs (self or partner) and with destructive conflict behavior (aggression and compliance). Conflict goals partially mediated
links between general conflict beliefs and specific conflict strategies. Conflict beliefs, goals, and behavior also uniquely
predicted the degree of conflict and intimacy in romantic relationships.

Being a victim of sexual aggression from a peer is a common experience among adolescents and poses a significant risk for
various forms of psychopathology. Unfortunately, little is known concerning specific interpersonal factors that increase an
adolescent’s risk for experiencing sexual aggression. The current study assessed the contribution made by several interpersonal
factors both for the first and repeated experience of becoming a victim of sexual aggression from a peer. Data were collected
annually from a longitudinal sample of 200 adolescents over a period of 4 years and were analyzed using multiple-spell, discrete-time
survival analysis. Approximately 46% of the adolescents reported experiencing some form of sexual aggression by the end of
wave 4. Further, 65% of victims reported experiencing a repeat incident of aggression. Females were at higher risk both for
initial and repeated victimization, as were adolescents with more sexual experience and higher levels of rejection sensitivity.
Results are discussed in terms of implications for future prevention efforts.

We investigated whether role models (individuals adolescents look up to) contributed to the resilience of adolescents who
were exposed to negative nonparental adult influences. Our sample included 659 African American, ninth-grade adolescents.
We found that adolescents’ exposure to negative adult behavior was associated with increased externalizing, internalizing,
and substance using behaviors, as well as more negative school attitudes and behavior. We found that role models had protective
effects on externalizing and internalizing behaviors and compensatory effects on school outcomes. Collectively, our findings
indicate that role models can contribute to the resilience of African American adolescents who are exposed to negative nonparental
adult behavior.

Despite interest in the role of religiosity in youth development and health behavior, few studies have examined these associations
in sexual minority youth. Participants (n = 11,699) who were adolescents (wave 1) and young adults (wave 3) in the Add Health survey were used to examine proximal
and distal religiosity by sexual identity group and to test group differences in associations between religiosity and alcohol
use. Sexual minorities were less likely than heterosexuals to report a current religious affiliation. In young adulthood,
heterosexual females reported significantly higher distal and proximal religiosity than heterosexual males and sexual minority
young adults. From adolescence to young adulthood, religiosity in all three sexual identity groups (heterosexual, bisexual,
gay/lesbian) significantly declined, with the largest effects found for the sexual minority groups. Distal and proximal religiosity
scores were significantly associated with less alcohol use and less binge drinking among heterosexuals, but not among sexual
minorities. Future studies of sexual minority youth and their religious contexts are suggested.

This study examined gender differences in cross-gender violence perpetration and victimization (ranging from mild, e.g., push,
to severe, e.g., assault with a knife or gun) and attitudes toward dating conflict, among an urban sample of 601 early adolescents
(78% African-American). Comparisons across gender groups for cross-gender (e.g., female-to-male) violence perpetration and
victimization indicated higher levels of perpetration for girls and higher levels of victimization for boys. Girls also reported
higher levels of verbal and physical violence toward partners with regard to attitudes toward dating conflict. A path model
was specified and indicated that cross-gender violence perpetration, harsh parenting, peer deviance, low family income, and
neighborhood hazards accounted for significant variation in attitudes toward dating conflict. Findings were discussed regarding
the need to identify developmental precursors of dating violence in early adolescence and to focus prevention efforts on components
(e.g., social skills, coping strategies) necessary to prevent the onset and escalation of adolescent dating violence.

A focus on antisocial beliefs and attitudes has informed both the assessment and treatment literature, and practice, in youth
justice service provision. This study attempts to broaden the construct of antisocial beliefs and attitudes and reports on
the psychometric development of the Antisocial Beliefs and Attitudes Scale (ABAS). The ABAS is a new instrument for measuring
antisocial thinking in older children and adolescents, which is developmentally-sensitive, broad-based, and assesses domains
grounded in the empirical literature on childhood conduct problems and delinquency. Along with a self-reported measure of
antisocial behavior, the ABAS was administered to 425 school children aged 10–18 (M = 14.18; SD = 2.31). A meaningful factor structure emerged from our instrument with two of the three factors, Rule Non-Compliance
and Peer Conflict, predicting self-reported antisocial behavior while demonstrating sensitivity to age and gender. These findings
are encouraging in our aim to “bridge” the measurement gap, by developing a reliable and valid measure of antisocial thinking
applicable to older children and adolescents.
