WINTER DREAM

'One World, One Dream' Chosen as the Slogan of the 2008 Olympic Games "同一个世界、同一个梦想"成为北京2008年奥运会主题口号At a press conference on June 26, 2005 in Beijing Workers' Indoor Stadium, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) announced that "One World, One Dream" is now Beijing's slogan for the 2008 Olympic Games. According to the analyses of the committee, "One World, One Dream" represents the essence of the Olympic spirit and Chinese values-unity, friendship, progress, harmony, participation and dreams.     

"CHINA IS MY HOME"

AMemoir of More Than 80 Years in China by Israel Epstein was translated into Chinese and published by the New World Press in April this year to celebrate the author's 89th birthday. The 415-page book tells about his love for China, his profound friendly sentiments towards the Chinese people, his great expectation for the construction of new China and his confidence in the bright prospects for its future.     

The Mysterious Forest in Xishuangbanna

Shen Xueren was born in Weifang City,Shandong Province in June 1941.He graduated from the Central Academy of Arts in 1966,and re- ceived a doctor's degree at the United Nations International University. Now,he is a member of the China Artists Association and the Chinese Calligrapher Association,a consultant for the China International Association of Celebrity,the arts and cultural exchange ambassador of the World Peace Foundation,an honorable member of the British Royal Joint Academy of Sciences,a researcher at the Research Center of the World Cultural Arts and an honored painter of the Cultural Market Development Center of the Ministry of Culture. In 1978,Shen created the Flower Painting Association.In the same year,he participated in the setting up of Beijing Painting Shop.In 1980,he created the Research Association of Flower and Bird Paintings together with his friends.In 1999,he set up Shen Xueren Art Gallery and Shen Xueren Art Museum.From 1982 to 2000,he had many art exhibitions in many countries including the U.S.A.,Japan,France,Canada and Singapore.Wu Zuoren,Chairman of China Artists Association,attended the opening ceremony of his exhibition in Beijing.The chairman of the Artists Association hosted his exhibition in France.The Chinese Ambassador in Canada,Yu Chen,hosted his exhibi- tion in Canada. The local TV and newspapers report on his exhibitions,and his artwork is collected by embassies and museums.He was invited to draw pictures for the National Museum of China,the Great Hall of the People, Xinhua News Agency,the People's Daily and CCTV,and was also invited to the University of Toronto to give lectures on Chinese painting. Shen has won many awards in many countries.These include an award of excellence for international ink paintings held in Japan in 1986, an award of excellence for new in- ternational art exhibitions in 1988 in Japan,the gold medal of the second Chinese Art Competition in 1999,a sil- ver medal in the 2000 World Chinese Art Exhibition,and a special award from the 2001 Beijing International Art Exhibition.In 2007 his artwork was collected by the UN World Peace Foundation and was awarded the World Peace Art Achievement Award. He was given the title World Art Master.     

Uncertainties In the New Year

The global economy is expected to grow by 2-3 percent in 2010,according to the Yellow Book of International Economy for 2010 released on December 24 by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS).Zhang Yuyan,Editor in Chief of the yellow book and Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics at CASS,offered his insights into uncertainties in the world economy in 2010 at the launching ceremony for the yellow book.Edited excerpts follow:     

Clear Water Flowing Easily,Pure Heart Speaking Naively

Qiu Zhaoming, a renowned Chinese painter, was born in Zhejiang, China in 1940 and graduated from the Central Academy of Fine tArts in 1964. Majoring in Traditional Chinese Painting, she studied from famous painting masters like Li Keran, Li Kuchan, YeQianyu and Zong Qixiang. As a member of Chinese Artist Association and the Editor-in-chief of People＇s Fine Arts Publishing House, she won several national awards. Her works have been displayed and awarded both nationally and internationally. In 1990, she received IBBY meritorious prize and the Hans Christian Andersen Award Nominees for her excellent illustrations for children. She becomes the first Chinese painter to be awarded for this prize. In t999, she was awarded the honorary title of World Outstanding Chinese Artist and Worldwide Golden Prize for Chinese. In 2001, her paintings were selected and displayed at the exhibition ＂Chinese Traditional Paintings of the Past 100 Years.＂ She has numerous publications which are listed in Directory of Famous Painters in Modem China and Collection of Chinese Paintings in the Past Century as well as other encyclopedias and large albums of painting. Moreover, several works of her have been collected by National Museum of China, the head office of IBBY in Swiss and other institutions.

La Bella at Marella

There are different types of collectors: those who buy for investments, those who buy for aesthetic pleasure and those who have a real interest. AN opening night at the Marella is usually a big spread. So it was recently when the Beijing gallery opened a show of young Chinese artists which mixed irreverent social commentary with ceramic breasts and other human forms. Marella usually makes the biggest splash among the dozen or so openings every Saturday at Beijing's redbrick 798 art colony in the city's northerly Dashanzi district. Onlookers gawked as artists, media and collectors spilled onto the foopath with paper cups of Italian wine and plates of hors d'oeuvres at the recent opening party for Fancy Dream, a collection of works by young Chinese artists shown by the Marella, an Italian-owned art firm with galleries in Milan and Beijing.
