元认知学习策略在大学英语写作教学中的应用

在英语写作过程中,学习者拥有一定的元认知基础,能有意识地用英语进行写作并进行自我反省,同时对写作过程进行有效的规划、监控和评价,使写作成为学习者自觉、能动的认知活动。大学英语写作教学中由于学生缺乏有效地写作策略而存在种种问题,在教学过程中教师应指导学生运用元认知策略调节和监控自己的写作行为,提高写作能力。将元认知与大学英语写作教学融为一体,对深化英语课堂教学改革具有一定的现实意义。     

浅谈高职高专英语教学改革

社会的发展对各类人才英语应用能力的要求不断提高,然而高职高专生目前的英语学习状况却不容乐观,高职高专英语教学改革势在必行。本文提出了用听说领先读写跟进的模式来代替以往听说读写同时进行、齐头并进的做法,并在课程设置、教学方法及手段等方面提出了具体的实施方案。以期提高高职高专英语教师的教学水平,提高高职高专生的英语水平尤其是英语应用能力的水平。     

高分组和低分组学生英语写作学习策略的差异研究

本调查对商丘师范学院非英语专业的80名高分组和低分组学生进行了有关英语写作学习策略的研究，目的是试图比较两组之间在写作学习策略方面运用的差异，揭示写作学习策略对英语写作学习成功者的影响。     

英语写作中的中国式英语错误分析

中国式英语是英语写作的最大障碍之一,在措词、句式、篇章结构等方面严重影响英语写作的质量以及书面交际的效果。因此有必要对其产生的原因进行错误分析,在此基础上提出相应的对策,来帮助学生在英语写作中,尽量避免中国式英语的出现,切实提高学生的英语写作能力。

‘Character' Analysis: Writing and Identity 1500‐1755

In this article, I examine the sources of our modern idea of human ‘character' and its availability for ‘reading' in early modern English, tracing the evolution of the word through 1755 - the publication date of Samuel Johnson's Dictionary; by this date, the word comprehends most if not all of its current meanings. By exploring the history of the word ‘character' in the early modern period, I hope to reveal some of the ways in which ideas about written signs and texts have been woven into current notions of identity - but not so much our own identities, perhaps, as the identity of others. The purpose of this article is to suggest how the past history of the word ‘character' - its sources in the domain of writing - still animates its present usage and conditions our understanding of who others are or can be. What I will be tracing here, more precisely, is a succession of semantic shifts, or ‘extensions' of the semantic domain, of the word ‘character' over the course of this period.

浅析RICH教学法在高职高专纺织英语教学中的应用

纺织英语是高职高专纺织工程专业核心课程。本文根据现有专业英语教学实践的基础,把RICH教学法引入纺织英语教学,阐明了在纺织英语教学过程中需摆脱陈旧的教学方法,通过实行小型学生课题研究为基础的教学模式激发学生纺织英语学习兴趣,从而提高专业英语的教学效果。试从一个崭新的视野,分析RICH教学模式和理念在高职高专纺织英语教学中的应用。(162)     

浅析英语教学中的"互动"教学模式

通常情况下,课堂一直是大部分学生学习外语的主要场所,通过课堂教学,学生们学习外语知识并练习使用该语言,课堂教学成为他们学习外语的一个主要途径。因此,教师的课堂教学效果直接影响着学生学习外语的效果,教师课堂教学的成功与否,不仅能影响学生是否愿意接受课堂外语学习,是否对其产生兴趣,而且能影响整个课堂教学能否顺利进行。因此,课堂教学的方法显得尤为重要。     

农村中学英语教学现状的思考

农村英语教育是关系我国英语教育水平高低的重要因素之一。但是由于种种原因,农村初中英语教学水平一直不高。从农村英语教学的现状出发,分析其存在的问题及原因,从提高教师的自身素质、改进教学方法、改善教学设施和培养学生学习英语的兴趣四个方面提出解决的途径与方法。     

高职商务英语口语课堂教学质量的思考与改进

社会的发展以及商务英语专业培养方案的需要均迫使我们重视培养学生的英语能力,特别是口语能力。但受传统教育理念、手段、环境等诸多因素的制约,此前高职商务英语口语课程有其局限性,教学质量整体不能得以很好的提高,从而学生的商务英语水平也不能符合职业发展的需要。通过结合自身教学实际,提出改进商务英语口语教学的建议。     

Anti‐colonial Chicana feminism

Abstract

During the 1980s and 1990s, a critical mass of Chicana feminist scholars established a space and a voice to express an identity of opposition. This paper is an overview of Chicana Studies writings since 1991, emphasizing the pain, recovery, and celebration expressed by Chicana writers. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, I discuss the anti‐patriarchal, anti‐colonial challenges posed by Chicana theorists and feminists. I also confront the impacts of “internalized colonialism” that influence relations among Chicanas. Finally, I pose questions about the future writing agendas of Chicana feminists. An examination of Chicana feminist writings reveals the anti‐colonial features of her process of recovery and survival. The greatest potential value of Chicana feminist writing, especially certain lesbian writing, is “speaking secrets” to challenge the structure of power, the colonial patriarchy, and our participation in perpetuating it. The “collective good” continues as a dream and as a goal for the anti‐colonial Chicana feminist.     

Undelivered: the space/time of the sacred in Bataille and Benjamin

Bataille’s work of the 1930s on the sacred has strong echoes of Walter Benjamin’s writing on space and messianic time. In bringing together Bataille’s theoretical and fictional writings, alongside key Benjamin texts, this article seeks to develop our understanding of a perversely grounded sacred.     

The Effect of English Language Learner Reclassification on Student ACT Scores,High School Graduation,and Postsecondary Enrollment: Regression Discontinuity Evidence from Wisconsin

The recent increase in the number of students classified as English language learners (ELLs) has focused significant attention on reclassification policy, which governs the process by which ELLs move toward, and are deemed to reach, full English proficiency. In this paper, we draw on a data set containing annual individual‐level records for every Wisconsin student ever classified as an ELL between the 2006–07 and 2012–13 school years to estimate the effects of being reclassified at the end of 10th grade—a crucial period on the pathway to postsecondary education—on several measures related to students’ postsecondary attainments. We estimate these effects in a regression discontinuity framework, exploiting Wisconsin's policy rule that automatically reclassifies ELLs who score above a specified cutoff on the state's English language proficiency exam. Our analysis indicates that being reclassified as fully English proficient in 10th grade has a positive effect on students’ ACT scores. It also provides some evidence of a positive effect on high school graduation and the probability of enrolling in a postsecondary institution the fall after graduation. Together, our analyses provide evidence on the effects of a policy directly relevant to the country's fastest growing student population, and we close the paper with a discussion of the implications for research and policy.

‘Machiavelli's solitude’ is a new English translation by Ben Brewster of a lecture delivered by Louis Althusser in 1977, so far unpublished in French. O'Hagan presents it as exemplifying a side of Althusser which is often neglected: his skill as lecturer and stylist. He compares the content of this 1977 lecture with that of an earlier series of lectures on the same theme, delivered by Althusser at the École Normale Supérieure in 1972. He suggests that there is a striking shift in emphasis in Althusser's political and philosophical position between the two, in particular a move towards a more negative view of the role of the law in a popular democracy. In passing O'Hagan reflects on changing fashions in the writing of intellectual history.     

A multimodal discourse analysis of international postgraduate business students’ finance texts: an investigation of theme and information value

Thematic progression patterning and the composition of information value facilitate the development of well-structured messages. The text-based research of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) into textual features has been confined to language learning and workplace contexts. Empirical research studies involving finance have investigated students’ performance in finance courses and the effects of class attendance on their performance. However, no published studies have yet explored or analysed the textual features of tertiary finance texts. This study investigated the Theme and information value in 6 group assignments in finance, written by 19 Master's students in accounting. Underpinned by Halliday's SFL and Kress and van Leeuwen's system of the composition of information value, this study employed a systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA) of the texts. The SF-MDA revealed a high frequency of Theme reiteration patterns, the rare occurrence of a linear Theme pattern, and the minimal use of a multiple-Theme pattern. These findings have both theoretical and pedagogical implications for the teaching and learning of writing, particularly in the context of teaching English for business purposes.

Editor's Note on Policy Advocacy Essays

As our legion of obviously highly observant and dedicated readers will immediately note, this issue of the Policy Studies Review is marked by the introduction of a new feature which we have chosen to characterize as policy advocacy essays. Specifically, the two essays featured in this issue—"Strategic Treasury Debt Management in Public Policy" by Campbell R. Harvey and "How the Clinton Administration Can Make Foreign Aid Work" by Neil S. Zank—are significantly different from our typical articles. They go a good way beyond the usually rather cautious recommendations for policy change that are upon occasion put forward at the conclusion of our typically quite analytical and often empirically based articles. In contrast, neither of the two essays that follow intend to be objective. Rather, both authors, as individuals with long-time expertise in the areas about which they are writing, have quite decided opinions about significant reforms in major areas of national policy which they would like to see implemented.     

English Councillors and Mayoral Governance: Developing a New Dynamic for Political Accountability

Much has been written about the arrival of directly elected mayors into the English political landscape. The responses of the councillors serving on those councils to the arrival of elected mayors, has by comparison, been neglected. Yet, the construction, by councillors of a new role as the guarantor of local political accountability within mayoral councils, requires councillors to develop new patterns of political behaviour which challenge long‐held assumptions about the role of the councillor as a political representative. The paper reports the findings of research conducted amongst councillors on England's mayoral authorities, which explored how councillors have responded to the arrival of an elected mayor and what mayoral government means for our understanding of the role of the councillor within English local government.
