The moment I set eyes on one of the Fayum portraits depicting a middleaged man on a coffin lid in Cairo's Egyptian Museum, I was hooked. His pensive gaze and striking resemblance with many Egyptian friends put me on a journey of learning more about these spectacular mummy portraits, many of which reside in diaspora far away from home. EMPEROR Xuanzong(685-762)of the Tang Dynasty(618-907)has been renowned for his versatility,particularly in music.There are many anecdotes about the talented emperor.Once,while sitting at court,Emperor Xuanzong kept moving his fingers up and down his stomach.After the court was dismissed,Gao Lishi,the royal stew-ard,came in and asked the emperor,"Your Majesty,I noticed you pressing your fingers up and down your abdomen.Are you feeling unwell?"Emperor Xuanzo-ng replied,"No,I am fine.Last night I dreamed I was visiting the Moon Palace,and the fairies played celes-tial music for me.The melody was so captivating that I was totally engrossed in it.Later,the fairies played music again to see me off.The heavenly tune was wistful,intoxicating,and moving.When I woke up,I felt the melody was still ringing in my ears,so I wrote it down right away.

China and Maritime Cooperation in East Asia: recent developments and future prospects

Future international relations in East Asia are likely to be largely shaped by the maritime strategies and policies of various actors. This paper examines China's policy and behavior in maritime cooperation in the East Asian region in recent years, a topic that has been insufficiently understood. I suggest that while it is necessary and useful to take into account China's naval power, more attention to Chinese intentions and policy on East Asian maritime issues is warranted to arrive at a more balanced, and arguably more accurate, understanding of China's role in East Asian maritime affairs. This paper takes stock of China's changing perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors in maritime cooperation in the region. I describe China's new policy moves in the South China Sea and East China Sea. I also address some of the major Chinese concerns for further maritime cooperation in East Asia. I conclude that while a grand cooperative maritime regime is still not possible from a Chinese perspective, China is likely to agree to more extensive and substantive maritime cooperation in many functional areas, most notably in the non-traditional security arena.     

A Leap of Language

正Prior to arriving in China in 2017,I had read various books relating to China,famous Chinese novels as well as non-fiction and the seeds of my fascination were sown.Therefore,when I arrived I couldn't have been more excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country,so vastly different to my native home of the UK.The food,the landmarks,the mega cities and everyday life-I was raring to explore.
