The Right of Collective Self-Defense： the Essential Features of the Japan-US Military Alliance

This paper, through studying the debate and wrestling on constitutional amendment and lifting the ban on the right of collective self-defense in the post war Japan, has traced the historical development of Japan, ＂the abnormal child＂ of the Cold War system, in drafting contradictory constitution, and entering conflicting peace accords and the US-Japan Security Treaty under the control of the US, and the changes of Japanese government＇ s explanation in regard to constitutional amendment and lifting the ban on the right of collective self- defense. The paper also pointed out the reasons and results of the Andouble administration trying to amend the constitution and lift the ban on the right of collective self-defense, and analyzed Japan＇ s third political right deviation as well as the goals of its third national development strategy, namely becoming a military power, while sorting out and analyzing the formation and features of the Japan-US military alliance.

The Iraqi War breaking out on March 20, 2003 undoubtedly marks a turning point in current international relations. The international disputes around this war is not only an embodiment of differentbeliefs and positions on the issue of war and peace, but more importantly a demonstration of the deep skepticism and worry throughout the international community on the possible outcome of the war, as well as the future development of American diplomatic and military policies. All these will exert a profound and extensive influence on the trend of development of international relations in the future.

The Predicament and Prospect of Current Pakistan- U.S. Relations

Since the September 11 incident, the relations between Pakistan and the United States have been all along hinged on the war on terror. Out of its need in the war on terror, the United States has deemed Pakistan ＂a major non-NATO ally＂ and provided it with quite a big amount of aid and their bilateral relations have been closer than in the early stage of the post-Cold War period. In recent years, however, due to the deepening differences on the issue of war on terror, their bilateral relations have sunk into a predicament. The prospect of Pakistan-U.S. relations under the leadership of the new presidents of the two countries is worth our attention.     

Grasp U.S. Global Strategic Trend

President Bush won the election with higher support than expected in this U.S. election. The Republicans also occupied greater proportion in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. This reveals that U.S. society tends to be more conservative. The election process and result shows that the influence of the monologue financial groups on economic policy, the influence of religious right-wingers on ideology and state politics, the influence of the military industrial groups on defense policy and the influence of the neo-conservatism on foreign strategy have increased.……

China and the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea

After nine years of negotiations by 155 countries and international entities,the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Hereinafter referred to as the "Convention") was opened for signature on December 10,1982 in Montego Bay,Jamaica.The Convention lays down a comprehensive regime of law and order in the world's oceans and seas,establishing rules that govern all uses of the oceans and their resources.It is known as the "constitution for the oceans" and its historical position is second only to the United Nations Charter.2012 is the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Convention and the 18th anniversary of its entry into force.It is also the 30th anniversary of China's accession to the Convention and the 16th anniversary of its entry into force for the country.At this monumental moment in history,it is worthwhile to review China's contribution to the achievement of the Convention and reflect on the pros and cons of China vis-à-vis the Convention,so as to better explore ways and means of addressing future problems.

International religious freedom includes the freedom of religious belief, freedom of religious expression and the principle of equality between new religions and traditional religions. According to relevant international laws, the freedom of religious belief is absolute by nature, but the freedom of religious expression and the principle of equality between new religions and traditional religions are not absolute as they are regulated by legislations on freedom of religious expression and legislations on religious belief market access respectively.

The Nuclear Security Summit

The 1st Nuclear Security Summit was held in Washington, D.C, On April 12 and 13, 2010, and focused on how to better safeguard weapons-grade plutonium and uranium to prevent nuclear terrorism. The summit was impressive in terms of the number of participating countries and the rank of the participants, being the largest gathering of heads of state on American soil since the United Nations was founded in 1945. Leaders from 47 countries and major international organizations such as the UN, the IAEA and the EU attended.

On the Causes of Tensions on the Korean Peninsula and the Solutions

Since the emergence of nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula in the 1990s,the process of denuclearization has been unfolding,but has been unsatisfactory in promoting abandonment of nuclear weapons by the DPRK and reestablishing security in Northeast Asia.Gradually,the overall situation on the peninsula has worsened into an overall trend of deterioration.Especially since 2016,confrontation has further highlighted the complexity of the situation on the peninsula and the sharp increase of uncertainty.

Developing Sino-French People-to-People Exchanges and Promoting Sino-French and Sino-European Ties

At the invitation of Chinese Association for International Understanding （CAFIU）, a 4-member delegation of French experts on international relations headed by Mr. Robert Andrei, Presidentof ＂Asia Horizon 2020＂ of France, visited China from July 5 to 11. During their visit in Beijing, Mr. Li Chengren, Executive Vice-President of CAFIU met with the delegation. The delegation also cosponsored with CAFIU the ＂Seminar on Sino-French and Sino-European Ties＂, called on the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and China Institute of International Studies and had in-depth discussions with the Chinese experts on international issues of common concerns.
