Das Kino als symbolische Form von Weltgesellschaft

Filmische Ausdrucksmittel unterscheiden sich von den kulturellen Repr?sentationen traditionaler Gesell-schaften durch ihre dekontextualisierten, technisch reproduzierbaren und massenhaft konsumierbaren Verbreitungsm?glichkeiten, die nur noch lose an die bestehenden kulturellen und politischen R?ume des Nationalstaats gebunden sind. Diese bereits von Benjamin und Kracauer in aller Sch?rfe formulierten analytischen Einblicke in eine Soziologie des Kinos sollen in ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte gewürdigt und vor dem aktuellen Horizont von Weltgesellschaft diskutiert werden. Eine Soziologie des Kinos vermag dann Aussagen und Hypothesen darüber zu treffen, wie sich eine geteilte „Weltkultur“ als institutionali-sierter M?glichkeitsraum symbolischer Ausdrucksformen aus einer Vielzahl von Einzelkulturen ausdif-ferenziert und letzteren zugleich neuartige Entfaltungsm?glichkeiten anbietet.     

A call for mtDNA data quality control in forensic science

There is increasing evidence that many of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) databases published in the fields of forensic science and molecular anthropology are flawed. An a posteriori phylogenetic analysis of the sequences could help to eliminate most of the errors and thus greatly improve data quality. However, previously published caveats and recommendations along these lines were not yet picked up by all researchers. Here we call for stringent quality control of mtDNA data by haplogroup-directed database comparisons. We take some problematic databases of East Asian mtDNAs, published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences and Forensic Science International, as examples to demonstrate the process of pinpointing obvious errors. Our results show that data sets are not only notoriously plagued by base shifts and artificial recombination but also by lab-specific phantom mutations, especially in the second hypervariable region (HVR-II).     

New perspectives on intersectoral relationships between manufacturing and services

This study advocates the explicit incorporation of the production of in-house information services into input-output tables in order to overcome the limitations imposed by conventional accounting frameworks which distort the relationship between manufacturing and services. This relationship is analysed using a well-known impact methodology. The importance of consumption induced multiplier effects, i.e. demand linkages, is also emphasised. The shift in perception of intersectoral relationships which adoption of our methodology provides is demonstrated using Japan in 1980 as a case study. It is shown that ‘conventional’ analysis seriously underestimates the importance of services for output and employment creation. Comparisons to a recent study by Park and Chan (1989) are drawn which provided the stimulus for this paper.
