The August Vollmer Award Address is intended to focus on contributions to justice and the recipient's research and policy experiences. This is a story of one person's career focusing mainly on research with “considerations of use.” After receiving a formal education in psychology, social work, and sociology, as well as experience as a practitioner, the author's academic career has primarily focused on the link between research and criminal justice policy and practice. This is the story of that journey and how it was aided by events that could not have been foreseen.  相似文献

Large segments of the Muslim world are experiencing a radical return to ancient doctrine, not a reformation. Unlike Christianity with a separation of legal structures from religious dogma, many groups within the Islamic world are moving toward the imposition of severe Islamic law (Sharia) while theology as understood in the West is blocked. Simultaneously the issuance of Islamic religious injunctions (fatwas) is becoming more arbitary and unregulated.

Very little has been written about involuntary treatment for adult patients and even less about such treatment for paediatric patients. Ethical dilemmas for nurses in such situations have not been clearly articulated and there are no clear guidelines available in this area. The following findings from a qualitative, longitudinal study on the psycho-social aspects of treatment for childhood leukaemia and related diseases are offered as preliminary work on this important professional issue. The feelings of parents when confronted with the necessity of holding their child down so that they may receive probably curative treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia are described and some of the ethical and legal issues confronting nurses who provide these treatments are explored.  相似文献
