The resumption of Sino–Central Asian trade,c. 1983–94: confidence building and reform along a Cold War fault line

The resumption of trade across the Sino–Central Asian border in 1983 accompanied a gradual thaw in relations between China and the Soviet Union. This paper argues that: (1) Economic liberalization in China (alongside the Soviet Union) created a climate encouraging cross-border exchange. (2) Starting in 1983, improving relations between China and the Soviet Union permitted cross-border exchange in Central Asia; over the subsequent decade, trade volume served as a marker of bilateral relations. (3) Beginning in 1990, efforts by the Chinese leadership to accelerate reform in North-West China, coupled with the independence of Central Asian republics, led to a rapid increase in trade. Hence, the resumption of Sino–Central Asian trade was not grounded in meta-geographical projections – Silk Road, New Silk Road, Silk Road Economic Belt, Eurasian Continental Bridge – but determined by political and economic transitions in the two countries, accompanied by normalizing bilateral relations.

关于城市建筑业农民工组建工会的探索

随着国家社会结构和社会生活的深刻变化,我国工人阶级队伍的组成结构也发生着巨大的变化,特别是大量农村进城务工人员已成为工人阶级的新成员,这在建筑业尤为明显,他们已成为建筑业生产一线的主力军。把他们尽快组织到工会中来,维护他们的利益,提高他们的觉悟和意识,使其养成工人阶级的优秀品质,是关系到夯实党的阶级基础,扩大党的群众基础的大问题。     

Exploring conceptual legal knowledge building in law students’ reflective reports using theoretical constructs from the sociology of education: what,how and why?

The substantive content of the undergraduate law curriculum in the UK is currently under scrutiny as a result of forthcoming changes in the entry level requirements of the legal profession. As a result LLB curriculum designers are evaluating what knowledge should be included in the curriculum, how students should access this knowledge, and which pedagogic approaches to adopt. This study will analyse student submissions for an assessment item at York Law School called the reflective report to explore how students are building their conceptual legal knowledge, and what this means for curriculum designers. The data analysis will be informed by the theoretical constructs of three sociologists of education, Michael Young, Basil Bernstein, and Karl Maton, including their respective concepts of social realism, hierarchical and horizontal knowledge structures, and semantic gravity. It develops themes exploring how students can weaken the semantic gravity of knowledge to make meanings that reach beyond the learning context. It draws some conclusions about the implications of the research on future curriculum design and the importance of developing students’ engagement with powerful knowledge in the delivery of legal education in an academic environment.     

Community Engagement and Cultural Building Projects

This study explores whether community engagement efforts among nonprofit arts organizations pursuing major building projects are effective mechanisms for generating support from other organizations. Specifically, the study analyzes the degree to which context—such as the perceptions of the goals of community engagement efforts, competitive environment, and institutional characteristics—affect managers' perceptions of community engagement strategies. The study uses data on thirteen different cultural building projects in counties across the United States between 1994 and 2008 coupled with data on 444 arts organizations in the same county. The results of this study indicate that managers of nonprofit arts organizations perceive other organizations' community engagement efforts differently based on their own perceptions of the goals of those efforts, their own organization's competitive status, and perhaps even the age of their organization.
