Estimating the probability of identity in a random dog population using 15 highly polymorphic canine STR markers

Dog DNA-profiling is becoming an important supplementary technology for the investigation of accident and crime, as dogs are intensely integrated in human social life. We investigated 15 highly polymorphic canine STR markers and two sex-related markers of 131 randomly selected dogs from the area around Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria, which were co-amplified in three PCR multiplex reactions (ZUBECA6, FH2132, FH2087Ua, ZUBECA4, WILMSTF, PEZ15, PEZ6, FH2611, FH2087Ub, FH2054, PEZ12, PEZ2, FH2010, FH2079 and VWF.X). Linkage testing for our set of marker suggested no evidence for linkage between the loci. Heterozygosity (HET), polymorphism information content (PIC) and the probability of identity (P((ID)theoretical), P((ID)unbiased), P((ID)sib)) were calculated for each marker. The HET((exp))-values of the 15 markers lie between 0.6 (VWF.X) and 0.9 (ZUBECA6), P((ID)sib)-values were found to range between 0.49 (VWF.X) and 0.28 (ZUBECA6). Moreover, the P((ID)sib) was computed for sets of loci by sequentially adding single loci to estimate the information content and the usefulness of the selected marker sets for the identification of dogs. The estimated P((ID)sib) value of all 15 markers amounted to 8.5 x 10(-8). The presented estimations turned out to be a helpful approach for a reasonable choice of markers for the individualisation of dogs.     

Pericarotid bone splinter: a microscopic appearance in hanging

The investigation of the neck structures drawn from 145 cases of asphyxia involving pressure on the neck, for which microscopic examination was required at the Pathology Laboratory of the "Hotel Dieu" Hospital from Lyon, France, during January 1, 1999, to May 1, 2001, has pointed out in 3 cases, besides the classic signs already known, a particular lesion unmentioned yet in the literature, namely, a pericarotid bone splinter, placed in the proximity of the common carotid artery bifurcation. The bone splinters had dimensions between 0.25 and 0.7 mm and a certain antemortem character, surrounded by hemorrhagic areas and by fibrin. The 3 cases deal with adult males who had died through complete hanging, with the knot placed lateral, the hanging mark having the maximum depth in the laterocervical region, correspondent with our finding. Given the location of the bone splinter, we believe that this was produced by the tearing out from the transverse apophysis of the fourth cervical vertebra, as a consequence of the sudden traction during hanging. This sign appeared neither at other types of hanging nor at strangulation by hand or by ligature.     

School Leaders’ Experiences on Dealing with Students Exposed to Domestic Violence

School leaders’ experiences and perceptions of students’ domestic violence experiences and trauma-informed school interventions have been overlooked. This semi-structured qualitative study aimed to investigate three areas regarding school leaders’ perceptions regarding domestic violence-exposed students: 1) the experiences of school leaders in dealing with these students; 2) the barriers and strengths associated with managing these students; and 3) school leaders’ recommendations for overcoming any barriers related to this issue in schools. Interviews conducted with 15 school leaders were analysed using thematic analysis. School leaders were found to be instrumental in influencing school culture and support systems surrounding students’ exposure to domestic violence. However, school leaders provided mixed reports regarding the adequacy of resources for domestic violence-exposed students. Recommendations suggested by school leaders included more domestic violence specific training for school staff and training delivery methods that were more sensitive for staff who have personal experiences with domestic violence. School leaders expressed great concerns for teachers, particularly less experienced teachers, regarding their knowledge and skills to assist students who disclose family violence.

     

Social structure of the Jewish quarter in Vienna during the liberal era (1850–1900)

The article examines the nature of residential and coresidential patterns in the second half of the 19th century in a district of Vienna known as Leopoldstadt, which had a large Jewish population. Analysis of a database from this district, paying attention to occupation and class variables, suggests that the Jewish population therein was more mixed than traditional interpretations suggest, and that the concentration of Jews there can plausibly be explained mainly by reference to residential choices made by Jews to live near an economic infrastructure that catered to their religious and cultural needs. The patterns identified in the data suggest further that in interpreting the residential patterns of the city it is necessary to conceptualize the problem as one of interaction between religion, economics, and residential choice.
