Various studies found personality to be related to substance use, but little attention is paid to the role of personality risk dimensions with regard to an early onset of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use. Therefore, the current study used a variable-centered approach to examine whether anxiety sensitivity, hopelessness, sensation seeking, and impulsivity predict the onset of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use in early adolescence. Additionally, we adopted a person-centered approach to examine whether different personality subgroups could be identified, and whether these subgroups would be predictive of substance use. For that purpose, longitudinal data of a broader effectiveness study were used from 758 early adolescents (53?% female) aged 11–14?years. Structural equation models showed that hopelessness and sensation seeking were predictive of having ever used alcohol and tobacco. Also, sensation seeking was predictive of marijuana use. Latent profile analyses on the first wave data revealed a three-profile solution for boys (i.e., resilients, internalizers, and externalizers) and a two-profile solution for girls (i.e., resilients and internalizers). In contrast to our expectation, further analyses revealed no significant differences in substance use between the different subprofiles for both boys and girls. The separate personality dimensions thus seem more relevant in predicting the onset of substance use compared to the personality profiles. However, the personality profiles might be informative in explaining more excessive substance use behaviors. 相似文献

This article reports on a longitudinal study investigating gender differences in the association between maternal disclosure
and adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Little research has examined the relationship of parental disclosure to adolescents’
depressive symptoms and research on sex differences is particularly lacking. In a sample of 428 families with a mean age of
13.36 (52% female) of the target adolescents, maternal and children’s disclosure and depressive symptoms were assessed twice
with an interval of 4 years. Controlling for the quality of the parent–child relationship and levels of maternal depressive
symptoms, the analyses revealed an interaction effect for child’s gender, moderating the effect of maternal disclosure on
adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Higher levels of maternal disclosure were accompanied by lower levels of depressive symptoms
in girls and higher levels of depressive symptoms in boys. Gender differences in socialization, communication, individuation
and social networks might explain why daughters and sons are differently affected by maternal disclosure. 相似文献

Sibling relationships and parental support are important for adolescents’ development and well-being, yet both are likely
to change during adolescence. Since adolescents participate in both the sibling relationship and the parent–child relationship,
we can expect sibling relationships and parental support to be associated with each other. Theoretically, it can be expected
that there is either a spillover from one relationship to another (congruence hypothesis) or that one relationship can compensate
for the other (compensation hypothesis). However, research examining these associations in adolescence is limited. The present
study longitudinally investigated the bidirectional associations between sibling relationships and parental support during
adolescence. For five consecutive years, data were collected using self-reports of 428 families, consisting of a father, a
mother, and two adolescent siblings. The mean ages of the first-born (52.8% males) and second-born (47.7% males) were 15 and
13 years at T1, respectively. For the second-born siblings, prospective associations were found between sibling relationships
and adolescent-reported parental support in early adolescence, with no differences between same-sex and mixed-sex dyads. These
associations were not found for first-born siblings or for parents’ reports of support. The findings suggest a spillover from
the sibling relationship to adolescent-reported parental support only in early adolescence. Findings and implications are
discussed in terms of the congruence/spillover and the compensation hypothesis. 相似文献

In this study, we investigated whether parental smoking-specific communication is related to adolescents’ friendship-selection
processes. Furthermore, we investigated whether adolescents and their best friends influence each other over time, and what
role parents play in this process. In the present study we used data from the Family and Health project in which at baseline
428 full families participated. In this 2-year, three-wave longitudinal study data were available from fathers, mothers, early
adolescents (aged M = 13.4 years, SD = .50), and middle adolescents (aged M = 15.2 years, SD = .60). The majority of the participating adolescents were of Dutch origin (>95%). There was an almost equal distribution
of boys and girls, and adolescents with lower, middle, and higher educational levels were equally represented. Analyses were
conducted by means of Structural Equation Modeling. Results demonstrate that a high quality of the smoking-specific communication
is related to a lower likelihood of adolescent smoking, whereas the frequency is positively associated with adolescent smoking.
Both the quality and frequency of parental smoking-specific communication were related to adolescents’ selective affiliation
with (non-)smoking friends. The findings suggest that parental smoking-specific communication is associated with adolescent
smoking directly but also indirectly by influencing the friends the adolescents will associate with.

ABSTRACTThe article examines the extent to, and the conditions under which theoretical approaches from Social Movement Studies, mainly developed based on empirical experiences from the Global North, are appropriate for analysing contentious politics in the South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In order to answer this question, the article discusses whether social movements in Africa differ fundamentally from those in other world regions. Four main approaches from social movement theory are examined: resource mobilisation, political opportunity structures, framing, and collective identity, to find out how suitable they are for explaining empirical phenomena in Africa. It is argued that social movements in Africa are not principally different from those in other world regions. Approaches from social movement theory prove helpful in explaining phenomena in the South, although they suffer from the same weaknesses and limitations to their scope as they do regarding movements in the North. 相似文献

A 2-wave survey study among 1173 10–14-year-olds tested the longitudinal contribution of secrecy from parents to psychosocial and behavioral problems in adolescence. Additionally, it investigated a hypothesized contribution of secrecy from parents to adolescent development by examining its relation with self-control. Results showed that keeping secrets from parents is associated with substantial psychosocial and behavioral disadvantages in adolescence even after controlling for possible confounding variables, including communication with parents, trust in parents, and perceived parental supportiveness. Contrary to prediction, secrecy was also negatively associated with feelings of self-control. Secrecy from parents thus appears to be an important risk factor for adolescent psychosocial well-being and behavioral adjustment.PhD student, Department of Social Psychology, Free University, The Netherlands. The majority of young people experiment with alcohol use, smoking, drug use, and delinquency. In order to understand why adolescents are engaged in potential risk behaviors, it is important to look at the functions of these behaviors for adolescents' social and personal functioning. In this study, we examined whether substance use, transgressive behavior, and delinquency are related to the quality of peer relations. Univariate analyses of data of a study on five hundred eight 12–18-year-olds showed that substance use and transgressive behavior are positively related to both the quantity (chumship, size of network, and time spent with peers) and the quality (attachment, support, acceptance, and competence) of peer relations. The association with peer relations were less straightforward for adolescent delinquency. Hierarchical regression analyses, however, showed that when the associations of quantitative aspects of peer relations are controlled for, no additional effects of substance use and transgressive behavior emerged. This suggests that social functions of risk behaviors may be understood as providing the opportunity to intensify contacts with peers or initiate new relations that, in turn, may be related to peer relations in a positive sense. 相似文献

The market for social norms 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article presents a semirigorous model in which a new normarises out of the workings of a market for norms. Change istriggered by a shift in either cost-benefit conditions or groupcomposition. Because individuals are heterogeneous in importantrespects, they respond differently to these triggering events. The first persons to supply new norms generally are individualswho have either superior technical knowledge of cost-benefitconditions, superior social knowledge of group dynamics, orspecial endowments that provide them with unusually high tangiblebenefits from norm reform. Members of the social audience observethe competing efforts of these norm suppliers and reward themost meritorious ones by conferring on them either esteem or,according to an alternative conception, new exchange opportunities.Under optimal conditions, members of the audience - key participantsin the demand side of the market for norms - do not free-ridebecause they incur no net costs when conferring their rewards. 相似文献

Over the course of adolescence, an increasing number of adolescents experience depression. In order to effectively target depression, identifying risk factors for depressive symptoms is pivotal. Since low levels of self-efficacy were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms in previous studies, the current study investigated the bidirectional and prospective associations between depressive symptoms and academic, social and emotional self-efficacy from early to mid adolescence in a cross-lagged path model. The sample consisted of 1,341 adolescents (47?% girls) with a mean age of 14 years, SD?=?0.56. Depressive symptoms and self-efficacy levels were assessed every 6 months over a period of 2.5 years. Depressive symptoms predicted subsequent levels of academic and emotional self-efficacy on all time points, and social self-efficacy on one time point. Self-efficacy did not predict subsequent levels of depressive symptoms. There was no evidence of sex differences in the cross-lagged associations between depressive symptoms and self-efficacy levels. Implications of the findings are discussed. 相似文献
