Face of an Epoch : The Brezhnev Period Variously Assessed

Here in Moscow, in the quiet light of the table lamp, you open your soiled travel notebooks and the gray, limp page strikes your eye with a shaft of multicolored rays as if the brightest slide had been inserted in a projector: a steep mountain slope in screes of red stones; a "tanker" burns, giving off smoke; greasy, sooty clouds drift toward the village; the driver in a Panama hat, having fallen down the smoking slope, breaks pale, dotted trails through the fire. The column, which makes the road shake, rolls down toward the gorge; gun barrels jerk and roar on the open flatcar.     

A Bridge to Somewhere: Mapping State and Congressional Ideology on a Cross‐institutional Common Space

Researchers face two major problems when applying ideal point estimation techniques to state legislatures. First, longitudinal roll‐call data are scarce. Second, even when such data exist, scaling ideal points within a single state is an inadequate approach. No comparisons can be made between these estimates and those for other state legislatures or for Congress. Our project provides a solution. We exploit a new comparative dataset of state legislative roll calls to generate ideal points for legislators. Taking advantage of the fact that state legislators sometimes go on to serve in Congress, we create a common ideological scale. Using these bridge actors, we estimate state legislative ideal points in congressional common space for 11 states. We present our results and illustrate how these scores can be used to address important topics in state and legislative politics.     

STEREOTYPES AND DISPOSITIONS FOR CRIMINAL HOMICIDE

There exists disagreement in the existing literature with respect to the origins of differential police practices. Based upon observation of police work with traffic law violators, the present paper advances an organizationally sensitive analysis of police decision making. The essential interpretation is that police decision making in the context of traffic law violations is a function of relations between organizational norms and employee concerns with autonomy.
