Leyla Tavernaro-Haidarian 《Communicatio》2018,44(1):1-15
Democratic discourses are increasingly devolving into mudslinging matches where communicators attack their opponents—sometimes in crude and hostile ways. Underlying this type of discourse is the normative assumption that human affairs are inherently conflicting and best governed through struggles and contests. When considering why some discourses warrant re-examination and how this can be achieved, the role of culture and ethics becomes apparent. While our prevalent culture of adversarialism unearths many important facets of discussion, its discourses can also obscure valuable insights and foster division where collaboration is possible and quite possibly desirable. As such, contrasting normative approaches are worth considering. The African philosophy of ubuntu offers such an alternative as it espouses a harmonious and cohesive way of relating to fellow human beings that contrasts and complements individualist facets. It provides the space to evolve discourses in ways that support cooperative societal structures and practices. 相似文献

Differences between traditional Muslim marriage practice and the statutory formalities required for entry into a legally recognised marriage in England and Wales have resulted in serious question-marks hanging over the legal status of a seemingly significant proportion of Muslim marriages. This article places the spotlight on the vulnerability of spouses who remain unaware of the lack of legal status which may attach to their marriage or who may have been misled by their spouse as to the latter’s intention to obtain legal recognition for the marriage. The article first considers the statutory formalities required under English law for entry into a legally recognised marriage before drawing on the most up-to-date empirical research to highlight the apparently widespread non-compliance with the formalities within the Muslim community. The article then reflects on the various practical implications which may arise for parties to an unrecognised Muslim marriage before considering how the situation may be ameliorated. 相似文献

The relation between family functioning and school success was examined in 211 at risk, African American, inner city adolescents
attending middle school (grades 6–8). Interviews with adolescents and caregivers yielded data on family cohesion, parental
monitoring, and school engagement; school records provided data on grade point average. Results showed that both family cohesion
and parental monitoring predicted school engagement, but neither family characteristic predicted GPA. Important gender differences
also emerged. For boys only, the relation between family cohesion and school engagement was stronger when parental monitoring
was high. For girls only, the effects of cohesion and monitoring on school engagement were additive: girls with both high
family cohesion and high parental monitoring were most likely to be engaged in school. These findings extend the research
base on family protective factors for antisocial behavior in young adolescents. Implications for future examination of family
process characteristics in high-risk adolescents are discussed.
