Lectin-histochemical detection of degenerative glycoconjugate deposits in human brain

Several lectins were used to study the localization of glycoconjugates in brain of elderly people and patients with Alzheimer type dementia (ATD) and Down's syndrome (DS). Five kinds of degenerated or deposited materials stained clearly by lectins specific to GalNAC, Gal, Fuc, and/or Man were recognized much in ATD and DS, less in elderly peoples, in addition to the binding of the lectins to neurons. (i) Round shape deposits called corpora amylacea (CA) which consisted of various sizes of round material, existed mainly on the surface of cerebral cortex and some in white matter of the brain. They were colored by Alcian blue (AB), Aldehyde fucsin (AF) and periodic acid shiff (PAS) and weakly by Hematoxylin (H), but not by Eosin (B). They showed clear reactivity with lectins specific to GalNAC, Gal, Fuc and Gal-GalNAC. (ii) Amorphous and variform amyloid deposits existed around blood vessels in the white matter were stained by thioflavin and lectins specific to GalNAC, Gal and Fuc, but not with Man specific lectins and PAS, AB, AF and HE. (iii) Another kind of amyloid deposits which showed a similar characteristic to the previous one and were recognized mainly in white matter and independent blood vessels. These deposits were stained by thioflavin but not by PAS, AB, AF and HE and showed good reactivity with lectins specific to GalNAC, Gal, Fuc, Gal-GalNAC, Gal-GIcNAc and Man. The reactivity with lectins specific to Gal, Fuc, and Man was seen in senile plaques (iv) and neurofibrillary tangles (v). Although at present we are unable to explain the origin of these deposits, it is clear from this study that the glycoconjugates form an integral part of the degeneration in the brain. The lectin staining with GS-I is useful in the forensic pathology to diagnose brain disorders at postmortem examination, since these lectin were able to detect five types of degeneration changes and/or deposits.     

Molecular analysis of the human esterase D gene ESD(*)Q0(yonago) responsible for incompatibility in a Japanese paternity case

In a Japanese paternity test, an alleged father was excluded only by reverse homozygosity of esterase D (ESD) phenotypes (mother, ESD 1; child, ESD 1; alleged father, ESD 2) out of 43 classical and DNA markers investigated. To solve the aberrant inheritance of the ESD phenotypes observed between them, fragments for all eight coding exons amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were subjected to DNA analysis. The child and alleged father shared a null allele, originating from ESD(*)1. It was characterized by having TGA for the stop codon instead of TCA for serine at codon 63. Thus, the sharing of a rare null gene, ESD(*)Q0(yonago), increased the probability of paternity.     

An autopsy report on a ruptured rudimentary horn (uterine anomaly) with ectopic pregnancy

The rudimentary horn is a rare developmental anomaly of the Müllerian duct. Ectopic pregnancy in the rudimentary horn is estimated to occur in one out of 76,000–150,000 pregnancies. A 30-year-old primigravida suddenly collapsed after 3 days of continuous abdominal pain. Emergency laparotomy revealed a massive intraperitoneal hemorrhage and fetal demise. The growth of the fetus after 19 weeks of gestation is believed to have caused the rudimentary horn rupture, thereby rapidly leading to hemorrhagic shock in the mother and ischemic death in the fetus. This is the first autopsy report on maternal death due to the rudimentary horn or other Müllerian duct anomalies, which emphasizes the need for forensic pathologists to consider this condition as a possible cause of unexpected death in fertile women. In addition, it is very important for clinicians to detect Müllerian duct anomalies by sonography during routine obstetric examinations, and promptly diagnose anomaly related ectopic pregnancies in women displaying symptoms of an acute abdomen, intraperitoneal hemorrhage, or shock in the emergency practice.     

Shareholding characteristics and imperfect coverage of the Stewardship Code in Japan

Abstract

While the degree of cross shareholding among corporations, or between banks and companies (referred to as ‘insiders’ in this article) has been declining since the 1990s, the percentage of shareholding by institutional investors (‘outsiders’), or financial intermediaries, has been increasing in Japan. Studies show that both companies and investors are becoming more short-term oriented and are showing herd behaviour. With such a collective mentality, company–investor relations in Japan have experienced a vicious cycle and have thus lowered the market's rate of return. Meanwhile, conventional ‘insiders’ tend to hold shares in the longer-term, but lack engagement in investee companies’ corporate governance. Japan's Stewardship Code requests fund managers ‘engage’ more than ever in the governance of investees so that investor-company relations become longer-term and the risk of investors’ ‘exit’ decreases. However, the Code only covers the behaviours of ‘outsiders’ but not those of ‘insiders’, who still play certain roles among all shareholders. Due to its imperfect coverage, the expected effect of Japan's Stewardship Code in achieving stronger ‘engagement’ by investors should be limited. To cope with this issue, this article outlines a suggestion that a comprehensive rule covering all types of shareholders should be implemented in Japan.     

Theorizing Postcolonial Deliberation and Deliberative Peacebuilding

Given a legitimation problem of vertical (state vs society) and horizontal (modernity vs tradition) inequalities and differences as a historical and cultural cause of conflict, deliberation is instrumental in addressing this legitimation problem and transforming conflict into peace in the postcolonial, post-conflict context. Although deliberation has gained academic attention as a means of addressing the legitimation crisis in Western liberal democracies, its application to contemporary peacebuilding remains under-researched. This article thus aims to theorize postcolonial deliberation and deliberative peacebuilding, highlighting postcolonial history and culture and the critical role that agencies have played in deliberation to re-legitimize the non-Western polity and transform conflict into peace. It then deduces a hypothetical mechanism of the different paths to peace either with or without the external intervention that signifies how agencies deliberate.     

No More Negotiated Deals?: Settlement of Trade and Investment Disputes in East Asia

Many argue that East Asian countries have come to adopt ‘aggressivelegalism’ in trade and investment policy, in the sensethat they have come to settle their trade and investment disputesthrough the dispute settlement mechanism (DSM) of the WTO andthe other third-party procedures. Scrutiny of the dispute casesof these countries shows, however, that East Asian legalismis not so aggressive, that it varies country by country, andthat there still exists room for negotiated deals in settlingtrade and investment disputes among them. On the other hand,the recent move toward regional integration through free tradeagreements (FTAs), economic partnership agreements (EPAs), andbilateral investment treaties (BITs) in East Asia may lead tothe adoption of a more aggressive legalism in the region, inparticular in settling investment disputes, disputes relatingto intellectual property rights, and trade remedies.     

Accidental hanging by a sweater: an unusual case

An accidental atypical hanging with the collar of a sweater is reported. A 67-year-old man was found dead in the sitting position with the collar of his sweater hanging off the brake handle of a motorcycle. Autopsy findings revealed a ligature mark on the surface of the neck; hemorrhages in the sternohyoid muscles; submucosal hemorrhages in the left greater horn of the hyoid bone; a large degree of submucosal petechial hemorrhages in the larynx, oral mucosa, and palpebral conjunctivae; and dark-red liquid blood with little clotting in the heart cavities. The alcohol levels in the blood and urine were 2.84 mg/ml and 3.52 mg/ml, respectively. It was concluded that the man had died from hanging by the sweater, and it was speculated that when he became inebriated, he might have lost consciousness and then fell with the collar of his sweater hanging from the brake handle of the motorcycle.     

Forensic Autopsies can Determine Latent Prostate Cancer Prevalence

To evaluate the usefulness of forensic autopsies in determining latent prostate cancer (PC) prevalence, we examined latent PC prevalence from autopsies and compared our findings between decedents with and without cancer. Data from forensic autopsies performed in Japan from 2004 to 2014 were obtained. For each prostate, histopathological examinations were performed in both the base and the apex sections. Three hundred and seventeen Japanese decedents were selected for analysis. The mean age of decedents was 56.4 ± 17.8 years (range, 14–94 years). Among this population, 39.4% died suddenly of disease and 60.6% died of external causes. Latent PC was identified in 45 (14.2%) decedents, who ranged from 27 to 93 years old (mean, 71.1 ± 12.9 years). The prevalence of clinically significant PC with a Gleason score of 7 or more was 8.8%, and the rate increased with age. Fifteen males had cancers other than PC. The prevalence of overall latent PC was significantly higher for those with cancer compared with those without (40.0% vs. 12.9%; P = 0.003). In this study, the use of forensic autopsy materials provided the opportunity to obtain a more accurate natural history of PC, as the decedents in this situation would have been more likely to have died suddenly while behaving as normal prior to death, and less likely to have been impacted by long-term medical interventions.

An Unforgettable Journey of Cultural Exchanges

A 40-member Hiroshima Kagura delegation visited China from June 24 to 29 in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relationship between Japan and China. I feel very honored to be one of the 20 members in the Hiroshima Kagura troupe that joined the delegation and played the part of female ghost in Hunting in Red-Leaf Woods.
