Abstract: Achieving employment equity has become an important organizational goal. An important part of an Employment Equity Program (EEP) is to inform designated group members (i.e., women, members of visible minorities, disabled persons and aboriginal peoples) that career opportunities are available to them. Public awareness programs that provide this information, such as publicity campaigns and visits to schools and community centres, are infrequently used, however. The research reported in this article demonstrates that public awareness programs can be used to encourage designated group members to apply for jobs that are traditionally avoided. In this study, young women demonstrated a greater interest in and intention to choose non-traditional careers after participating in a public awareness program (an information session) about one specific non-traditional career (police officer). Implications of this research for recruiting and employment equity initiatives are discussed. Sommaire: L'éuité en matière d'emploi est l'une des principales préoccupations des organisations. 1 cet effet, les programmes d'équité en matière d'emploi (PEME) visent à corriger la discrimination dans l'emploi à 1'égard des groupes défavorisés (femmes, minorités visibles, handicapés et autochtones). Les programmes d'information publique offrant une telle information, par le biais de campagnes d'information, de visites scolaires et dans les centres communautaires, sont cependant peu utilisés. Dans cet article, les réultats de notre recherche démontrent que les programmes d'information publique peuvent encourager les membres des groupes défavorisés à soumettre leur candidature dans les secteurs d'emploi non-traditionnels. Dans cette étude, des jeunes femmes ont montré un intérêt plus prononcéà choisir une carrière non-traditionnelle après avoir participéà un programme d'information publique (une séance d'information sur la carrière d'officier de police). Pour terminer, nous discutons les implications de cette recherche sur le recrutement ainsi que les programmes sur l'équité en matière d'emploi.  相似文献

In India, millions of female foetuses have been aborted since the 1980s alongside an abnormally high infant girl mortality rate; this has generated a vast literature exploring the root causes of son preference. The literature is sparse, however, on how the decisions to abort or neglect girls are made. This paper examines mothers’ and fathers’ respective roles behind those decisions. Using the third National Family and Health Survey (NFHS-3) data, we show that sex-selective abortions are most commonly used if both spouses or if only the fathers prefer sons, while sex-selective neglect is used if only the mothers prefer sons.  相似文献

Over 25 years ago, Justice Bertha Wilson asked “Will women judges really make a difference?” Taking up her question, we consider the place of difference in gender and judging. Our focus is on those ‘differences of opinion’ between judges that take the form of written and published judicial dissent. We present and interrogate recent statistics about practices of dissent on the Supreme Court of Canada in relation to gender. The statistics are provocative, but do not provide straightforward answers about gender and judging. They do, however, pose new questions, and suggest the importance of better theorizing and exploring the space of dissent.  相似文献

The authors inquire into traumatic experiences of refugies who recently arrived in Montreal from the former Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. They look into both the trauma experienced before as well as after they settled in Montreal. Based on close exmination of some selected cases of men accepted into Canada as political refugees, the conclusion stresses the importance of the family in successfully overcoming the traumatic past.  相似文献

New sex-selective abortion technologies allow parents-to-be to implement their preference for sons more easily than in the past. With an unmet demand for sons in India, a better understanding of what leads respondents to prefer sons is important from a policy perspective. Stated son preference has seldom been studied in the past.

Using data from NFHS3, I conclude that never-married women's preference for sons is strongly influenced by the financial worth of children, whereas never-married men's preference for sons is mainly influenced by non-financial reasons, including their perception of women, their religion and their caste.  相似文献

Abstract. The French Communist Party pays particular attention to the writing and the recounting of its own history. Its militants consent often to an important training effort. The understanding of historical memory by the dimension which connects French Communism to 'true socialism', would prohibit reasoning which would have an objective of re-instating the memory of French Communists as an element of a partisan identity, rather than the falsification of which the nature of history might have been the object. Maurice Halbwach's notion of 'collective memory' fits this project. Consequently, some elements of the party's historical memory, especially autobiographies of communist party leaders, are compared to the opinions or life experiences collected from militants. In this comparison between published memories and oral life stories, models and constant themes appear. But one must also insist on the discrepancies between interviews, and on the differences between life stories and published autobiographies. If autobiographies provided life patterns founded on invariable elements and methods of historical interpretation, other factors were of influence, such as how long the subject has belonged to the party, the family continuity in the partisan group, school background.  相似文献
