Eleven Y chromosome short tandem repeat markers: DYS19, DYS385, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, DYS437, DYS438 and DYS439, have been typed in the three main UK population groups: Caucasians, Afro-Caribbeans and South Asians. Existing PCR reactions were adapted to incorporate DYS437, DYS438 and DYS439. The observed 11 loci haplotypes and the individual allele frequencies for each locus are presented. Distinct differences for most markers were observed between the population groups studied. 相似文献

Are smaller ethnic groups less advantaged than large groups? This question has not been systematically studied. Using two new datasets, we find that when group size and status are analyzed at national levels smaller groups are generally worse off than larger groups. By contrast, when group size and status are analyzed at subnational (regional or district) levels, smaller groups are better off than larger groups. “National” minorities are disadvantaged while “local” minorities are advantaged. We theorize that two factors are at work in generating this surprisingly consistent relationship. First, a synergy exists at national levels among three features of ethnic groups: size, power, and status. The second factor is based on social dynamics. Specifically, insofar as internal migration is characterized by positive selection, then migrants and their descendants should form the basis of small, privileged groups within the region that they migrate to. Insofar as distance enhances positive selection, this explains why smaller migrations are associated with more privileged groups and larger migrations with somewhat less privileged groups. 相似文献

The current understanding of the determinants of homicide derives primarily from studies in which data are aggregated for geopolitical units. Case-control studies and other analytic methods are needed to test causal hypotheses regarding the risk of homicide victimization or perpetration for individuals. Strengths and limitations of the case-control method are illustrated by comparing the design with cohort studies. Fundamental issues include the selection and comparability of cases and controls, effects of biases, interpretation of risk estimates, and problems of implementation. Increased use of this method should advance our understanding of homicide and other forms of intentional violence.Presented in part at the 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology, San Diego, California, November 16, 1985. 相似文献

Previously reported Y chromosome STR haplotype databases for three UK population groups, plus additionally analysed samples, have been scrutinised for the presence of non-standard (intermediate, null and duplicated) alleles. These alleles have been characterised by sequencing, some showing changes in the repeat structure, and the frequencies reported. Mutation rates for each of the 13 STRs have been calculated when analysis of father-son pairs has been possible. An example illustrating the use of non-standard alleles in a large family tree is outlined. 相似文献

Analysis with commonly available STR kits can sometimes fail to produce sufficient information in immigration cases containing only one parent. In these cases, not only does paternity/maternity need to be assured, but also other possible relationships dismissed (e.g. avuncular relationships). We have taken more than 50 of these cases and investigated which type of additional marker produces the greatest benefits: 48 SNPs or 6 additional informative STRs (including 5 additional markers from the new European extended set). The results of this analysis show the SNPs to be of greater value. 相似文献
