“We have to tell our own story”: semiotics of resisting negative stereotypes of Nigeria in the heart of Africa nation branding campaign

This study examines the semiotic resources deployed in resisting negative stereotypes of Nigeria in the international community, particularly representations of the country in the Western media. Data for the study were drawn from Nigeria’s Heart of Africa nation branding campaign. The study applies the discourse-historical approach (DHA) pioneered by Ruth Wodak of the Vienna School of CDA. DHA attempts to integrate much available knowledge about the historical sources and the background of the social and political fields in which discursive events are embedded. Further applying Reisigl and Wodak's presentation of the discursive strategies normally oriented towards understanding texts related to nations and national identities, among others, the study reveals that in appropriating the semiotic resources in the campaign, the discourse producers have predilection for the discursive strategies of mitigating negative attributes which the out-group intensifies, and highlighting positive attributes which the out-group seemingly under-reports in its representations of Nigeria. Notwithstanding the rhetorical dynamics of the semiotic resources, the study concludes that enduring national image management thrives on creating new images and associations lived by a country’s citizens rather than tries to refute old ones.     

Corruption: Governance challenge towards reducing unemployment in Nigeria

The study examines the possibility of having a very low rate of unemployment in Nigeria, if there is a reduced rate of corruption in the long-term. While using cointegration regressions and Vector Error Correction Mechanism (VECM) over the period 1996–2020, it is affirmed that corruption could increase unemployment rate in the long run. The two corruption indicators employed (control of corruption and corruption index) are found to have a substantial effect on unemployment rate. Further evidence confirms that corruption and unemployment are cyclically interdependent. Findings indeed stress that a high level of corruption is harmful to employment growth. On the other hand, in the absence of sufficient job opportunities, rent-seeking government officials would be more interested in collecting bribes from job seekers, which results in sustained unlawful practices among the public officials. Thus, adopting effective corruption-control measures is critical. It is therefore suggested that to effectively tackle corruption incidents, there should be incentives for citizens or public officials to report bribery and the process of reporting corruption incidents should be further simplified. Strengthening anti-corruption agencies and developing a sound legal framework that promotes a culture of lawfulness and impeccable practices in the public sector are central.     

Beyond 90°: the angularities of black/queer/women/lean

This essay argues for detailed attention to the materiality of black queer women’s spatial coordinates, the literal points of contact with the surfaces we traverse, as sites where categories of race, gender, and sexuality are disciplined and negotiated. It does so through a brief history of how Man’s 90° relationship to the ground, a verticality and perpendicularity that valorizes a physical comportment that is also the structuring condition for one’s political capacities, is produced by enforcing black and indigenous subjects to the ground, invariably defining the categories of Otherness as 0° and 180°. Through a reading of Rashaad Newsome’s performance Shade Compositions, the author argues a reading of the angles that exceed 0°/90°/180° may provide paths for reorienting the possibilities of black queer presence in the field of the political. If 90° signals a delimited political field, then, one governed by notions of rational civility that are always exclusive of black and black queer bodies, might the angularities surrounding, say, 120° reveal sites of productive incivility that are inextricable from the lives, experiences, and certainly bodies of black queer women themselves?
