In lists of the ‘famous’, and especially ‘famous artists’, the only category containing a substantial number of women is that of writers of fiction. The stratagems practised by male gatekeepers in order to exclude women from serious consideration as artists, thinkers and creative human beings do not, however, cease to operate in the field of writing; rather, they operate in a different way. In order to succeed as artists of any kind, women must in some way hold unusual and subversive views, at least of themselves and their place in the world. Frequently (though not always) they also hold a mirror up to the inferior position generally allocated to women, and the many forms taken by sexist oppression. However, the price of being admitted to the canon of those writers acknowledged by the male establishment as ‘great’ has generally been a refusal to acknowledge or recognise, in the work or even in the life, the existence of any subversive content which could challenge the dominance of the androcentric world view. Evidence of subversion is suppressed altogether, denied, discredited, or distorted. Antony Alpers' treatment of Katherine Mansfield's life and work, and in particular of the connections between the two, illustrates this process.  相似文献

This article discusses the potential for reducing the externally exclusionary aspects of citizenship in a post-Westphalian community, as conceptualised in Andrew Linklater's critical theory. Linklater's claim that post-sovereign developments in the European Union provide encouraging signs in this regard is evaluated in the light of the EU's attempted harmonisation of free movement, asylum and immigration policies. It is argued that the case of the EU provides little support for Linklater's assumptions, largely because: (1) the theory fails to recognise the exclusionary consequences of the differentiation of outsider status; and (2) it relies too much on the causal effects of institutional frameworks. While fully supporting the theory's normative stance I suggest that the strong reliance on institutional remedies may have counterproductive effects, and thus that the regionally restricted attempt to externalise aspects of citizenship, while pushing the exclusionary boundary further outwards, has not eliminated the insider-outsider distinction in an EU context.  相似文献

According to the sources the position of women in Old Norse society was rather good. In this article the trustworthiness of the portrayal of women in saga literature is discussed. Special emphasis is given to the goading women since the picture of the strong women in Old Norse society leans very heavily on this motif. Today some scholars believe in the goading women, others regard them to be the authors’ invention. In this article it is argued that the goading women belong to real life, and that women who goaded acted in a female role which gave them real power. Finally, the author tries to point out a few factors which could explain the basis for women's power in Old Norse society.  相似文献
