This study revisited the Philadelphia Foot Patrol Experiment and explored the longitudinal deterrent effects of foot patrol in violent crime hot spots using Sherman's (1990) concepts of initial and residual deterrence decay as a theoretical framework. It also explored whether the displacement uncovered during the initial evaluation decayed after the experiment ended. Multilevel growth curve models revealed that beats staffed for 22 weeks had a decaying deterrent effect during the course of the experiment, whereas those staffed for 12 weeks did not. None of the beats had residual deterrence effects relative to the control areas. The displacement uncovered had decayed during the 3 months after the experiment, and it is theoretically plausible that previously displaced offenders returned to the original target areas causing inverse displacement. These results are discussed in the context of Durlauf and Nagin's (2011) recent proposal that prison sentences should be shortened, mandatory minimum statutes repealed, and the cost savings generated by these policy changes shifted into policing budgets to convey more effectively the certainty of detection. It is concluded that if Durlauf and Nagin's proposal is to succeed, then more holistic policing strategies would likely be necessary. Foot patrol as a specific policing tactic seems to fit nicely into a variety of policing paradigms, and suggestions for incorporating them to move beyond strictly enforcement‐based responses are presented. 相似文献

Wechsler Verbal-Performance IQ discrepancies have been associated with the broad classification of delinquency, but not with a specific criterion of acting out or psychopathic adjustment. Accordingly, this study examined the hypothesis that the WISC- R Verbal-Performance IQ discrepancy would be larger or more frequent for persons classified as exhibiting a psychopathic delinquent adjustment than for persons classified as either neurotic or subculturally delinquent. Within-subject differences on intellectual measures were obtained for both the psychopathic and subcultural, but not the neurotic, delinquent adjustment classification. This result indicated consistency of intellectual asymmetry across behaviorally diverse delinquent subgroups. No between-group differences were obtained. The results were interpreted as affirming a reliable intraindividual intellectual asymmetry which provides a foundation to model and test hypotheses relating intellectual processes and delinquent behavior. This work was conducted while the second author was a Clinical Research Training Fellow in Ad-lescence (funded by T32 MH14668) with the Adolescent Program of the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute. Introduce and test the relative efficacy of two methods for modeling the impact of cumulative ‘exposure’ to drinking facilities on violent crime at street segments. Methods
One method, simple count, sums the number of drinking places within a distance threshold. The other method, inverse distance weighted count, weights each drinking place within a threshold based on its distance from the street segment. Closer places are weighted higher than more distant places. Distance is measured as the street length from a street segment to a drinking place along the street network. Seven distance thresholds of 400, 800, 1,200, 1,600, 2,000, 2,400 and 2,800 feet are tested. A negative binomial regression model controlling for socio-economic characteristics, opportunity factors and spatial autocorrelation is used to evaluate which of the measure/threshold combinations produce a better fit as compared to a model with no exposure measures. Results
Exposure measured as an inverse distance weighted count produces the best fitting model and is significantly related to violent crime at longer distances than simple count (from 400 to 2,800 feet). Exposure to drinking places using a simple count is significantly related to violent crime up to 2,000 feet. Both models indicate the influence of drinking places is highest at shorter distance thresholds. Conclusions
Both researchers and practitioners can more precisely quantify the influence of drinking places in multivariate models of street segment level violent crime by incorporating proximity in the development of a cumulative exposure measure. The efficacy of using exposure measures to quantify the influence of other types of facilities on crime patterns across street segments should be explored. 相似文献8.
Simulation for Theory Testing and Experimentation: An Example Using Routine Activity Theory and Street Robbery 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3

Achieving a better understanding of the crime event in its spatio-temporal context is an important research area in criminology
with major implications for improving policy and developing effective crime prevention strategies. However, significant barriers
related to data and methods exist for conducting this type of research. The research requires micro-level data about individual
behavior that is difficult to obtain and methods capable of modeling the dynamic, spatio-temporal interaction of offenders,
victims, and potential guardians at the micro level. This paper presents simulation modeling as a method for addressing these
challenges. Specifically, agent-based modeling, when integrated with geographic information systems, offers the ability to
model individual behavior within a real environment. The method is demonstrated by operationalizing and testing routine activity
theory as it applies to the crime of street robbery. Model results indicate strong support for the basic premise of routine
activity theory; as time spent away from home increases, crime will increase. The strength of the method is in providing a
research platform for translating theory into models that can be discussed, shared, tested and enhanced with the goal of building
scientific knowledge.

Objectives
Prior research demonstrates that crime is highly concentrated at place and that these concentrations are stable from year to year, highlighting the importance of place to crime control and prevention. A potential limitation is that most studies only use one data source to diagnose these patterns. The present study uses data from both police and emergency medical services (EMS) to explore the spatial concentration and stability of drug activity in Seattle, Washington from 2009 to 2014.Methods
We use concentration graphs and group-based trajectory analysis to examine concentration and stability of calls related to drug activity in both data sources separately and combined. Additionally, we employ Andresen’s S-Index to determine the similarity of concentration within the SPD data, the EMS data and the combined data year to year as well as the degree of co-location between the SPD and EMS data during the study period. Results
We find a high degree of concentration and group-based stability for both SPD and EMS drug calls across all street segments in Seattle. Conversely, we find only moderate local geographic stability of drug use across street segments as indicated by each of the data sources over the study period. Last, we find the spatial patterns in drug use as indicated by each data source are significantly different each year. Conclusions
At the same time these findings provide support for the law of crime concentration, they also raise questions about local stability patterns. Additionally, they highlight the importance of expanding inquiries of crime and place research into new data sources. Our results serve to reinforce the importance of multiple data sets in quantifying, understanding, and responding to the drug problem in Seattle.10.
Hot Spots of Juvenile Crime: A Longitudinal Study of Arrest Incidents at Street Segments in Seattle,Washington 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Recent studies have shown that crime is concentrated at micro level units of geography defined as hot spots. Despite this
growing evidence of the concentration of crime at place, studies to date have dealt primarily with adult crime or have failed
to distinguish between adult and juvenile offenses. In this paper, we identify crime incidents in which a juvenile was arrested
at street segments in Seattle, Washington, over a 14-year period, to assess the extent to which officially recorded juvenile
crime is concentrated at hot spots. Using group-based trajectory analysis, we also assess the stability and variability of
crime at street segments over the period of the study. Our findings suggest that officially recorded juvenile crime is strongly
concentrated. Indeed, just 86 street segments in Seattle include one-third of crime incidents in which a juvenile was arrested
during the study period. While we do observe variability over time in trajectories identified in the study, we also find that
high rate juvenile crime street segments remain relatively stable across the 14 years examined. Finally, confirming the importance
of routine activity theory in understanding the concentration of juvenile crime in hot spots, we find a strong connection
between high rate trajectory groups and places likely to be a part of juvenile activity spaces. Though place-based crime prevention
has not been a major focus of delinquency prevention, our work suggests that it may be an area with great promise. 相似文献
