Christabel Pankhurst and the Smethwick Election: right-wing feminism,the Great War and the ideology of consumption

This article examines the roots of Christabel Pankhurst's Women's Party in the Women's Social and Political Union's adoption of right-wing feminism during the Great War. It explores the blending of radical-right and imperialist ideology with a feminist agenda that combined a demand for women's rights with an anti-Bolshevik economic policy based on the power of female consumers. This blending of feminism and nationalism won Christabel the ‘coupon’ endorsement of the Lloyd George coalition and became the ideological platform for her parliamentary campaign in the Smethwick election. Although Christabel lost the election by 775 votes, it is contended that the Women's Party platform offers clues to the attraction of right-wing ideology to some notable figures in the women's movement.     

Allele sharing in first-degree and unrelated pairs of individuals in the Ge F I AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus database

Eleven Italian forensic laboratories participated in a population study based on the AB Profiler Plus loci with proficiency testing. The validated database, including 1340 individuals, is available on-line. Tests for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, gametic unbalance, and heterogeneity of gene frequency were generally not significant. Gene frequencies at each locus were consistent with those of two previously published Italian studies, but different from a third. Individuals of each subsample were paired, and the total number of alleles shared across the nine loci was determined in each pair. The analysis was replicated over the total sample. In addition, two samples of mother-child pairs (N=315) and full-sib pairs (N=91) were subjected to allele sharing analysis. The resulting distributions were sufficiently distinct from the sample of unrelated pairs as to be of practical usefulness.     

Immediate anaphylactic death following antibiotics injection: splenic eosinophilia easily revealed by pagoda red stain

The comparison of 4 cases of immediate anaphylactic death following the intramuscular injection of antibiotics (different types of penicillin or cephalosporins) with 4 cases of immediate non-anaphylactic death (induced by different causes) recognized splenic eosinophilia, as the main feature for the differential diagnosis, in agreement with isolated previous studies. The use of a stain (pagoda red) little known and seldom employed in Pathology and in Forensic Medicine, showed the concomitant massive presence (immunohistochemically confirmed) of mast cells and degranulated mast cells, the latter mainly located in splenic sinuses. The whole of our findings led us to consider the spleen as the possible shock organ in man. Waiting for further judgment on our hypothesis, we seized the opportunity to remark the employment of the pagoda red stain when the contemporary demonstration of eosinophils, mast cells and degranulated mast cells is required.     

Improving consultation to ensure the European Union's democratic legitimacy: From traditional procedural requirements to behavioural insights

Consultation is a crucial tool for better regulation, as well as being essential for the accountability and legitimacy of decision-makers. The European minimum requirements for consultation are fundamental conditions in order to attain these goals. However, they may not be enough, and consultation should also be designed to neutralise or reveal cognitive limitations, both of decision-makers as well as of stakeholders. This paper claims that enriching the better regulation approach with cognitive insights can in fact increase consultation effectiveness and thus become a critical piece in the puzzle to improve the legitimacy of the European Commission. Moreover, it suggests some techniques to tackle this complexity, which need to be further assessed by ad hoc experiments.

Y-chromosome haplotypes in Italy: the GEFI collaborative database.

A sample of 1176 males from 10 Italian regions have been typed for DYS19, DYS389-I, DYS389-II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392, DYS393, and DYS385. Individual haplotype data are available on line. A low degree of variation is present among regions. Use of this database is specifically recommended for forensic applications in Italy.
