ABSTRACT

Zakes Mda’s novel, Ways of Dying, centers on physical violence and death in black communities during the transition from apartheid to democracy. Rather than look toward a post-apartheid future that is anticipated by so many, Mda depicts the reality of death as the product of the volatile politics of late apartheid, demonstrating through the lives of his characters the ways in which systemic violence persists. Set in the early 1990s, the pervasive experience of death and inescapable poverty is relentlessly depicted, unmasking any illusion of positive transformation. The novel debunks the widely celebrated idea or impression of the country’s transition as remarkable or peaceful; its focus on the tens of thousands killed at the tail-end of apartheid refuses this untruth. Mda invites a critical understanding of black literal death, its horror in the questions about mourning raised, and the structural conditions that confine black lives even as a grand narrative is being told outside this novel’s pages.  相似文献

Abstract

The paper examines the sense in which Gianni Vattimo's story of a long goodbye to modernity along with an interminable weakening of Being inaugurates a leftist philosophico-political project. The hermeneutics of "weak thought" is criticized for (a) its ambiguous concept of interpretation; (b) its way of integrating proceduralism in post-metaphysical philosophizing; and (c) the unhappy marriage it promotes between nihilism and emancipation. Finally, a philosophico-political version of hermeneutic ontology based on the idea of situated transcendence is suggested as an alternative to Vattimo's nihilistic socialism.  相似文献

This contribution offers a careful but critical reading of Johan van der Walt’s theory of post-apartheid law as sacrifice and social struggle. By placing a theoretical emphasis on the inevitability of violence and the impossibility of love, Van der Walt’s thesis risks denying the possibility of thinking the world in a different, way. In order to reconceive the terms of community and horizontality in post-apartheid South Africa, there is a need to move beyond thinking the world as constructed according to tension, conflict and self-preservation at the expense of understanding and compassion. In developing a critique of law as sacrifice, I utilise Panu Minkkinen’s call for justice as the beyond of law that goes beyond the mere battle for recognition. I also address his view that the unappeasable desire of metaphysics entails the recognition that there is hope for the future and the recovering of transcendence as otherness. Secondly, I use Louis Wolcher’s work on Zen Buddhism to argue that any obsession with conceptual purity, as is glimpsed in Van der Walt’s work, ignores the impossibility of setting down the immutable and universal truth for all time. In other words, however attractive a theory of law as sacrifice may be, it is only one perspective amongst many others. Lastly, I contrast Van der Walt’s work with that of Luce Irigaray, and in particular her formulation of ‘horizontal transcendence’ that makes possible relations ‘between two’.

鲁洁教授在学术论著中从理论与实践的两个层面对自我超越的艰难性进行了分析。当她认定自我超越是人之生存本性同时又痛感现时教育对人之自我超越形成严重桎梏与障碍之时,她对教育产生形成人之超越性的期待也就成为一种逻辑的必然。这样的逻辑关联也铸就了鲁洁教授心中的教育理想与教育信念。这不只是鲁洁教授一人的期待,也是千千万万教育工作者的期待,甚至也是全社会的期待。从鲁洁教授对美好教育的殷殷期待中,我们能感受到并且也分享着一种深邃而又博大的教育之爱。  相似文献

对死亡的关注以及"超越死亡"的文学理念是一条时粗时细的线,贯穿了川端整个的文学创作。川端早期作品中对死亡的抵抗意识的流露、新感觉派时期的"万物一如、轮回转生"思想的提出、战争期间作品中对人类生命价值的纯粹的追求、战后的"回归传统"与"进入魔界"以及获诺贝尔文学奖后的对日本文化的宣扬,这一切都从不同的角度体现了川端的"超越死亡"的文学理念。正是透过川端的这一文学理念,我们发现表面上对现实与人生毫不关心的川端文学,实际上对现实和人生乃至对社会有着强烈的关照。  相似文献
