论诗歌的句法结构美--汉英诗歌比较研究

On Syntactic Beauty of Poetry

The present paper is a continuation of s the discussion of contrastive study of Chinese and English poetics, following the publication of the thesis "On the Musical Beauty of Poetry" (1990). It tries to explore the aesthetic features of the structural aspects of Chinese and English poetry. It puts forth such concepts as syntactic unit, combination of syntactic units, and series of such combinations. It describes the grammatico-functional distribution of Chinese phrases in poetic lines. It discusses parallelism, symmetry and asymmetry of English poems, contrastive couplets and parallel lines of Chinese poems. It analyses Chinese poems on five dimensions: even-deflected patterns, rhythmic patterns, parts of speech, grammatical function, and semantics. It sums up patterns of poetic repetition of Chinese and English poetry. It finally approaches the analysis of poetry on syntactic, rhetoric and thematic dimensions. The paper gives many illustrations telling readers about how to master the technique of poetic translation.
