论《红玫瑰与白玫瑰》的深层结构

Red rose and white rose is Eileen Chang’s masterpiece.With reference to the Greimas structural se-mantics and sign theory,this paper digs into the complicate relationship between Zhenbao the subject and Jiaorui and Yanli the objects.The comparison between supporters and opponents of different match shows the influence of sexual traditions,marital concepts and ethnical conventions on men’s choice of spouse.Zhen bao’s choice between Jiaorui and Yanli reflects women’s lack of free choice in living conditions,love and marriage as well as the loss of their self-conscious.Zhenbao’s mother,as both supporter and opponent,was actually a defender of traditional concepts.Such deep analysis of Eileen Chang’s values makes it clear of her sympathy with Zhenbao,her praise of Jiaorui and her bitter hatred to Yanli.
