An Analysis of Beijing Bamboo Branch Songs in the Qing Dynasty

A style of four-line poem with seven Chinese characters each line, called bamboo branch songs, was popular in the mid and late Qing Dynasty in the royal capital city of Beijing. These poems vividly depict the cultures and customs of the then Beijing, give an account of lifestyles at that time and tell us the story of the Qing monarchy from prosperity to decline. As intangible cultural heritage, the poems have become a cultural sign of that time and function as references for us to know about the life of the royal city of Beijing in the late Qing Dynasty. These poems feature unique cognitive and aesthetic values.
