An Analysis of the Trends of Social Development of the Yao Communities in Hekou County, Yunnan Province

Since the founding of New China, there have been great changes in the Yao communities in Hekou County. Politically, the authority of the traditional chieftainship has diminished, and in its place comes the recognition of the national political authority and the transition to democracy. Economically, the Yao communities have freed themselves from the bondage of land centered natural economy and adopted market economy, which ensures their prosperity in the future. Culturally, they are beginning to absorb the best of other civilizations while cherishing their own cultural traditions, which makes it possible for their culture to thrive.
