Her research and scholarship interests include public child welfare policy and practice, interpersonal violence, and postpositivist models of inquiry and practice. Recent publication include an article in Social Service Review. She is co-author of the forthcoming Evaluating Social Programs and Professional Practice in the Human Services.;Donald E. Chambers, D.S.W., is a Professor in the School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas. His fields of interest include poverty, income maintenance and income transfer policies, and child welfare issues. Recent articles have appeared in Social Service Review, and Journal of Social Policy. He is also author of The Practical Public Policy Analyst and co-author of the forthcoming Evaluating Social Programs and Professional Practice i n the Human Services.
Abstract:The article reviews the history of the evolution of the definition of child abuse as a social problem, then analyzes the related legislative efforts to respond to the problem, giving special emphasis to child abuse prevention. Program outcomes of relevant primary prevention programs are discussed, as well as studies attempting to predict risk of child abuse. Specific conclusions related to the viability of primary prevention of violence to children are presented.
