From Gultural Silence to Cultural Integration

The present paper is a study of the transformation of the themes in Chinese American writing,as illustrated in works from Pardee Lowe's Father And Glorious Descendants ,"the first literary work written by a Chinese in English",to Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior published in 1970s.In the former book,Lowe describes the superiority of American culture and the effort of Chinese Americans to enter the mainstream society;while in the latter,Kingston focuses on the identity and characteristics of Chinese Americans who are already part of American society.It is concluded that the themes developed in the writings of the Chinese American writers were much shaped and influenced by the ideology and the dominant white culture.
