The Relationship between Female College Students'Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Mobile Phone Addiction:The Mediating Effect of FOMO and the Moderating Role of Social Support

To explore the mediating effect of fear of missing out between female college students'basic psychological need satisfaction and mobile phone addiction and the moderation effect of social support,totally 956 female college students in Shandong Province were investigated with basic psychological need satisfaction scale,fear of missing out scale,mobile phone addiction scale and perceived social support scale.Results:Female college students'basic psychological need satisfaction was negatively correlated with fear of missing out,mobile phone addiction(r=-0.29,-0.44 P<0.01).Female college students'basic psychological need satisfaction was positively correlated with friends support,family support and important others support(r=0.55,0.53,0.52 P<0.01).Female college students'fear of missing out was positively correlated with mobile phone addiction(r=0.51,P<0.01).Female college students'fear of missing out was negatively correlated with friends support,family support and important others support(r=-0.16,-0.15,-0.18 P<0.01).After controlling for gender and grade differences,female college students'basic psychological need satisfaction significantly negatively predicted mobile phone addiction(β=-0.43,P<0.001).Fear of missing out played a partial mediating role between female college students'basic psychological need satisfaction and mobile phone addiction(β=-0.13,P<0.001).Friends support moderated the second half path of the mediation relationship.The mediating effect of fear of missing out was moderated by friends support.
