犯罪行为是犯罪主体对犯罪客体的作用，因此总要形成一定的物质痕迹，而犯罪行为人在现场留下的物质痕迹，是其犯罪行为、犯罪心理及其他心理的外化表现。犯罪现场留有什么样的物质痕迹，这些痕迹之间的相互关系，产生痕迹的犯罪行为等都会反映出与之相适应的心理状态。通过现场痕迹反映出的犯罪心理状态并不是可以通过感官或仪器就可以直接感知的，而是需要依靠心理学和逻辑思维的方法去进行。
