影响中日关系的实质性问题并不是复交与否，而在于日本自明治维新以来，一直怀抱大国之梦，与中国有着深层次的分歧。在热战时代，两国是侵略和被侵略的关系，水火不容；在冷战时代，演变成了两个阵营的对立；冷战结束之后，综合国力趋近，而国家利益趋远。只有强强共处才能够确保中日关系的平稳发展。

On the History and Future of Sino-Japanese Relations

The essential problem that affects Sino-Japanese relation is not whether the diplomatic relations are reestablished or not, but that Japan has been ambitious to be a great power and had different opinions with China since Meiji-Restauration. At the shooting war, Japan invaded China, and the two countries were incompatible. At the cold war, the two countries were in definite conflict. Since the end of cold war, the difference in comprehensive national strength between them has been reduced and conflict of the national interest between them has been increasing. And only peaceful coexistence of the two great powers can assure that the relations between them would develop steadily.
