从封闭式族群经济到高新科技产业--美国旧金山湾华人调查

旧金山湾区的美籍华人分布于7个郡县。他们的经济行为被限于两大部分:民族商业和专业部门。他们有两种适应美国社会的方法:一是从事劳力密集型商业组成的传统民族商业;二是通过接受高等教育以及科技方面的专门训练。在民族商贸中,同类商业活动的竞争非常激烈。一部分人一旦接受更好的教育,就面临着继续呆在民族商贸和离开民族商贸的两难选择。拥有大学及大学以上教育程度的华人,更喜欢离开民族商贸出去一展才华。

From a Closed Ethnic Economy to Cutting-Edge Technological Industries

The Chinese Americans in San Francisco Bay live in seven counties and prefectures. Their economic activities fall into two categories: ethnic economy and professionals. They have formed two ways to adapt to the American society: one is through the traditional ethnic economy made up of labor-intensive businesses; the other is through cutting-edge technological industries and professional institutions after receiving higher education as well as special training in technology. Inside the closed circle of the ethnic economy, businesses of the same kind have intense competition. With better education, people will face the dilemma of either leaving or staying. Those Chinese Americans with college education prefer leaving the ethnic business circle to realize themselves outside. To other immigrant ethnic groups, striving for a college education for their children is a common strategy to acquire social mobility.
