The Vicious Cycle of Building and Destroying: the 2014 War on Gaza

The 2014 summer war on Gaza was the third in the last six years and in many ways the most devastating one. While the triggers to this war were the kidnapping and killing of the three Israeli teenagers and the subsequent kidnapping and burning alive of a Palestinian teenager, the real reasons can be traced back to the international community's failed and myopic policies towards Gaza. Moreover, by adopting the ‘West Bank first’ strategy the international community has failed to blow some fresh air into what is left of the so-called Middle East Peace Process and has acted as the abettor of the recent war.

INTERVIEW WITH RITA E. HAUSER

Ms. Hauser is an International lawyer and head of the American branch of the Tel Aviv-based International Center for Peace in the Middle East. She was a member of the Brookings Institution's Middle East Study Group in 1975 and 1987-88 and is a former U.S. representative at the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. Ms. Hauser was also a U.S. delegate to the 24th U.N. General Assembly and has long been active in Republican party circles. In December 1988, she led a group of American Jews in meetings with PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat in Stockholm and Geneva. The delegation was instrumental in Arafat's explicit clarification that the PLO had recognized Israel, accepted Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 and renounced terrorism, a move that prompted the Reagan administration to open a “substantive dialogue” with the PLO. The following interview was conducted by Roger Gaess, a free-lance journalist, on December 20, 1991, at Ms. Hauser's office in midtown Manhattan.

A SEMINAR WITH IBRAHIM YAZDI

Dr. Yazdi, a pharmacologist, university professor and political activist, served as deputy prime minister and foreign minister under the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, resigning in protest during the hostage crisis of November 1979. He served in the Majlis (parliament) 1980-84 and is now secretary general in the opposition political party, the Liberation Movement of Iran. He shared his views with the Middle East Policy Council as a private citizen. His interlocutor was Geoffrey Kemp of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
