The association between sexual debut timing and depressive symptomatology in adolescence and emerging adulthood was examined
using data from Waves I, II and III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Respondents who reported never
having sexual intercourse at Wave I and were 18–22 years of age at Wave III were included (n = 5,061). Twenty percent of respondents experienced early (<age 16) and 49% experienced typical (ages 16–18) sexual debut.
In bivariate analyses, pre-debut depressive symptoms were associated with earlier sexual debut among female but not male adolescents.
In models adjusting for demographic characteristics and pre-debut depressive symptoms, sexual debut was positively related
to adolescent (Wave II) depressive symptomatology, but only among female adolescents age less than sixteen. However, sexual
debut timing was unassociated with emerging adult (Wave III) depressive symptomatology for both male and female respondents.
Findings suggest sexual debut timing does not have implications for depressive symptomatology beyond adolescence.

Using a sample of 7,881 African American (915 males and 1,073 females) and White (2,864 males and 3,029 females) adolescents
from Waves 1 and 3 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examined the psychosocial consequences
that obese adolescents encounter as they reach young adulthood. Results indicate that obesity among adolescent females is
associated with a lower status attainment in young adulthood than normal weight adolescent females. In addition, obese adolescent
females have more depressive symptoms in young adulthood than normal weight females, even after controlling for prior depressive
symptoms in adolescence. Obesity status among adolescent males is not associated with poorer psychosocial outcomes in young
adulthood. We did not find evidence of an interaction between obesity status and race, indicating no significant differences
in psychosocial outcomes for obese White compared to obese African American adolescents.

Despite interest in the role of religiosity in youth development and health behavior, few studies have examined these associations
in sexual minority youth. Participants (n = 11,699) who were adolescents (wave 1) and young adults (wave 3) in the Add Health survey were used to examine proximal
and distal religiosity by sexual identity group and to test group differences in associations between religiosity and alcohol
use. Sexual minorities were less likely than heterosexuals to report a current religious affiliation. In young adulthood,
heterosexual females reported significantly higher distal and proximal religiosity than heterosexual males and sexual minority
young adults. From adolescence to young adulthood, religiosity in all three sexual identity groups (heterosexual, bisexual,
gay/lesbian) significantly declined, with the largest effects found for the sexual minority groups. Distal and proximal religiosity
scores were significantly associated with less alcohol use and less binge drinking among heterosexuals, but not among sexual
minorities. Future studies of sexual minority youth and their religious contexts are suggested.

This study applies latent growth curve analysis to data from three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent
Health (n = 10,828) and finds that symptoms of depression and social support interact with one another in a dynamic fashion across
the transition from adolescence (mean age at Wave 1 = 15.28 years) to young adulthood (mean age at Wave 3 = 21.65 years).
Parental support during adolescence is inversely associated with initial symptoms of depression for girls and boys, although
adolescent girls with low levels of parental support begin the study period with significantly higher levels of depressive
symptomatology than their male counterparts. In addition, adolescents who begin the study period with higher levels of depressive
symptomatology report less parental support during young adulthood. Finally, regardless of their initial level of depressive
symptoms, girls and boys who experience increased symptoms of depression over time also report lower levels of parental support
at the end of the study period.

Academic Achievement and Problem Behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander American Adolescents 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Yoonsun Choi 《Journal of youth and adolescence》2007,36(4):403-415
Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study tests whether the relationship between academic
achievement and problem behaviors is the same across racial and ethnic groups. Some have suggested that academic achievement
may be a weaker predictor of problem behaviors among Asian Pacific Islander American (API) youth; that they can have high
grades but still exhibit problem behaviors. This study finds that academic performance is a significant predictor of aggressive
and nonaggressive delinquent offenses, gang initiation, sexual behaviors, and substance use, and that the relationship generally
does not vary by race and ethnicity. Thus, there is little evidence that API youth are high achievers who are also engaging
significantly in problem behaviors. The existing perceptions of API youth may be largely based on stereotype and ambivalence.

The purpose of this study was to gain a clearer understanding of the relation between parents’ knowledge of their emerging-adult
children and emerging adults’ risk behaviors. Participants included 200 undergraduate students between the ages of 18 and
25 (121 women, 78 men; M
age = 19.59, SD = 1.62) and both of their parents. Results revealed that knowledge of the emerging-adult child’s activities varied as a function
of parent- and child-reports, and that child outcomes associated with parental knowledge were generally positive, including
less drinking, drug use, and risky sexual behavior (although this varied as a function of reporter). The links between maternal
knowledge and lower drug and alcohol use were particularly strong in the presence of maternal closeness. Implications for
understanding the parent–child relationship during the transition to adulthood were discussed.

Little is known about the impact of the relational context of adolescent sexual activity on depressive symptoms. The present
study examined trajectories of depressive symptoms among 6,602 adolescents (44% male, 60% White) taken from a nationally representative
study (Add Health). Sexually active youth in romantic and casual relationships were first compared to virgins and then to
each other by relational context. Longitudinal, multilevel models examined differences in the course of depressive symptoms
based on sexual activity separately by gender and age group (ages 12–14 and 15–18). Results indicated that when compared to
virgins, any differences in depressive symptoms by relational context of sex were present prior to youth’s sexual debut. The
few significant differences found between youth who had sex in romantic relationships verses those who had casual sex were
present before sexual initiation and not maintained over time, suggesting that casual sex in adolescence is not associated
with long-term risks for depressive symptoms.

Current research in adolescent sexuality has largely focused on vaginal-penile intercourse, with less attention to noncoital
sexual activity. This study examined how maternal factors influence the transition from virginity to noncoital behavior among
White and Asian American youth who have never experienced vaginal intercourse. We conducted logistic regression analyses to
examine whether traditional maternal predictors of coital sex were important in understanding noncoital sexual activity of these two populations. Waves 1 and 2 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were utilized.
For White Americans (n = 3,926), direct and indirect maternal factors were associated with noncoital sexual involvement: maternal support, control,
mother–child communication about sex, and adolescents’ perceptions of maternal approval of sex. In contrast, only maternal
support was associated with the onset of noncoital sexual behavior for Asian Americans (n = 611). The study underscores the need to explore culturally specific factors that may influence Asian American adolescent
noncoital sexual behaviors.

Protective and risk factors associated with rates of early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors for a sample of low-income
adolescent boys were examined using bioecological theory framed by a resiliency perspective. Protective processes examined
include a close mother–son and father–son relationship, parental monitoring and family routines, as well as the adolescent
boy’s academic achievement, expectations, and school recognition. The risk factors assessed were delinquent behaviors, if
the adolescent was born to a teenage mother, family structure, monthly family income, risky neighborhood environments, family
of origin welfare receipt, and maternal education. Waves one (1999) and two (2001) of Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study were used (N = 528; Wave 1 ages 10–14 years). Associations between early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors with individual, family,
school, and neighborhood protective and risk factors were addressed through a series of d-probit and Ordinary Least Squares
multiple regression techniques. When protective and risk factors were addressed independently, academic achievement and parental
monitoring protected adolescent boys from early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors while drug and alcohol use and school
problems placed them at risk for these behaviors. However, when the model is assessed together, early parental monitoring
and academic achievement were shown to protect boys’ early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors by reducing their delinquent
behaviors, specifically early drug and alcohol use and school problems.

This study investigated the interaction between religiosity (defined as church attendance) and spirituality (defined as personal
beliefs in God or a higher power) on psychosocial adjustment. Four groups were created capturing 4 different religious/spiritual
orientations. Differences were assessed between the groups on a wide range of psychosocial indicators. Participants included
6578 adolescents ages 13–18 encompassing a school district in Ontario, Canada. Results were striking with regards to the consistency
with which religious youth reported more positive adjustment than did non-religious youth, regardless of level of spirituality. Spirituality may not be as salient an influence on behavior as religiosity. The secondary analyses indicated that the advantage
for religiosity may not be entirely unique to church attendance, but rather a function of being part of any community. However,
where religiosity may be uniquely associated with adjustment (over and above benefits associated with participation in any
community) is in lower levels of risk behaviors.

This study explored factors that may be associated with early initiation of sexual activity among adolescents. Using the cumulative
risk model, we hypothesized that as exposure to risk factors increases, so does the likelihood of early sexual debut. A sample
of 273 (53% girls, 90% European American) adolescents was followed longitudinally from age 13 to 15. The results indicate
that, for girls, increased television viewing, low self-esteem, poor parental relationships, living in a non-intact household,
higher levels of externalizing behavior (ADHD symptomology), low academic achievement, and parents with low education levels
were associated with earlier sexual debut. For boys, advanced pubertal development, increased television viewing, higher rates
of externalizing behaviors (ADHD and ODD symptoms), and poor parental relationships were associated with earlier sexual debut.
As hypothesized, predictive power increases with the accumulation of these risks; girls are 1.56 times more likely to become
sexually active with an increase of only one risk and boys are 1.90 times more likely.

This panel study investigated the directionality of relations between adolescents’ perceptions of their parents’ psychological
control and adolescents’ self-reported internalizing and aggressive (physical and relational) behaviors. Data were collected
from a random, community sample of 530 adolescents ages 12–19 years old at time 1, and again 2 years later. Hierarchical regression
analyses found that adolescents’ perceptions of parents’ psychological control at baseline did not predict changes in adolescents’
internalizing and aggressive behaviors over 2 years but higher internalizing behavior and physical aggression at time 1 predicted
increases in adolescents’ estimates of their mothers’ and fathers’ psychologically controlling behaviors. Higher relational
aggression reported by adolescents at time 1 predicted increases in their perceptions of mothers as psychologically controlling.
This study provides more evidence for child effects on adolescents’ ratings of their parents’ psychological control than for
parent effects of perceived psychological control on adolescents’ behavior.

We investigated whether role models (individuals adolescents look up to) contributed to the resilience of adolescents who
were exposed to negative nonparental adult influences. Our sample included 659 African American, ninth-grade adolescents.
We found that adolescents’ exposure to negative adult behavior was associated with increased externalizing, internalizing,
and substance using behaviors, as well as more negative school attitudes and behavior. We found that role models had protective
effects on externalizing and internalizing behaviors and compensatory effects on school outcomes. Collectively, our findings
indicate that role models can contribute to the resilience of African American adolescents who are exposed to negative nonparental
adult behavior.

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between child maltreatment, social support, and developmental outcomes in first-year college students. Participants were 202 undergraduate students (137 female, 65 male) who completed surveys at two time points: once before entering college and once during their first year of college. It was hypothesized that child maltreatment would predict poorer developmental outcomes in adolescence and early adulthood, but that social support would mediate this relationship. Results indicated that child maltreatment related negatively to developmental outcomes and to perceived social support; adolescent and young adult development related positively to perceived social support. In addition, a mediational model in which social support mediates child maltreatment and developmental outcomes was supported.

Doing Well vs. Feeling Well: Understanding Family Dynamics and the Psychological Adjustment of Chinese Immigrant Adolescents 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Despite their average high levels of educational achievement, Asian American students often report poor psychological and
social adjustment, suggesting an achievement/adjustment paradox. Yet, the reasons for this paradox remain unclear. Drawing
on 5-year longitudinal qualitative interview data, this paper compares the family dynamics of two groups of adolescents from
Chinese immigrant families: non-distressed adolescents (n = 20) who have high levels of academic achievement and high levels of psychological well-being; and distressed adolescents (n = 18) who have high levels of academic achievement but low levels of psychological well-being. Findings suggest that the
two groups of families differed in parenting approaches after migration, parent–child communication, parental expectations,
and parent–child relations. Implications for Asian American adolescent and youth development are discussed.

This study examines individual and partner characteristics associated with the perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV)
in young adult relationships with opposite sex partners. Using data from Waves 1 and 3 of the National Longitudinal Study
of Adolescent Health, this study examined 1,275 young adults’ heterosexual romantic relationships. Controlling for the effects
of family and school correlates measured in adolescence, we examined the extent to which participants’ general violent behavior
in young adulthood and their partners’ use of violence in their relationship influence participants’ IPV perpetration. We
found that both having general violent tendencies and being a target of violence in a relationship influenced one’s likelihood
of young adults perpetrating IPV. We also tested whether the overall influence of participants’ general violent behavior on
IPV perpetration was moderated by their partners’ use of violence in the relationship. We found that young women’s greatest
expression of violent tendencies emerged when in relationships with violent men; yet, when partnered with non-violent men,
young women’s own violent tendencies did not lead to IPV. We found little evidence for the interactive effect for young men
in the study. The lack of a significant interaction in the model indicated that young men’s general aggression was not conditioned
on their partners’ use of physical aggression in their relationships.

Being a victim of sexual aggression from a peer is a common experience among adolescents and poses a significant risk for
various forms of psychopathology. Unfortunately, little is known concerning specific interpersonal factors that increase an
adolescent’s risk for experiencing sexual aggression. The current study assessed the contribution made by several interpersonal
factors both for the first and repeated experience of becoming a victim of sexual aggression from a peer. Data were collected
annually from a longitudinal sample of 200 adolescents over a period of 4 years and were analyzed using multiple-spell, discrete-time
survival analysis. Approximately 46% of the adolescents reported experiencing some form of sexual aggression by the end of
wave 4. Further, 65% of victims reported experiencing a repeat incident of aggression. Females were at higher risk both for
initial and repeated victimization, as were adolescents with more sexual experience and higher levels of rejection sensitivity.
Results are discussed in terms of implications for future prevention efforts.

A large proportion of perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV) children are becoming adolescents and exploring their sexuality. This
study explored the prevalence of sexual behaviors (kissing, touching, engaging in oral sex, or having vaginal/anal intercourse)
in a sample of predominantly ethnic minority youths (N = 339; 54.1% Black and 30.4% Latino; 51% female; ages 9–16) perinatally exposed to HIV (61% HIV+). Using logistic regression,
we tested the association between sexual behavior and HIV status, demographic characteristics, and peer influences regarding
sexual behavior. PHIV youth were less likely to be sexually active. Among sexually active youth, PHIV youth were more likely
to engage in touching behavior than HIV-negative youth and were less likely to engage in penetrative sex. Youths reporting
that a greater number of their peers believed that sexually active boys were “cool” or “popular” were more likely to report
sexual behavior. The association between sexual behavior and peers believing sexually active girls were “cool” or “popular”
varied by age, gender, and HIV status. Furthermore, friends’ sexual activity was associated with sexual intercourse. Prevention
programs should strengthen messages addressing peer norms regarding sexuality, as well as address specific issues related
to adolescent HIV.

This study uses two waves of data to examine the relationships among patterns of racial socialization experiences and racial
identity in a sample of 358 African American adolescents (60% female and 40% male). Using latent class analyses, we identified
three patterns of adolescent-reported racial socialization experiences: High Positive, Moderate Positive, and Low Frequency.
Adolescent-reported racial socialization experiences at Wave 1 were associated with Wave 2 adolescent racial identity approximately
one year later. Specifically, High Positive and Low Frequency racial socialization were associated with racial centrality,
assimilationist ideology, and nationalist ideology. These findings suggest that various patterns of racial socialization practices
play an important role in the developing significance and meaning that African American adolescents ascribe to race.

This study utilized data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to investigate youth risk trajectories for HIV and
factors associated with different trajectories. The sample (N = 8,208) was 49.2% female, with a mean age of 14.31 (SD = 1.48). A group-based trajectory model was applied, which identified four distinct trajectories for both males and females:
(1) consistently higher sexual risk levels, increasing to early adulthood followed by some decrease (“high”); (2) a short
period of increase to late teens, followed by a longer period of decrease (“decreased”); (3) an initially slow increase, with
the increase accelerating by late teens, and a slight decline beginning in early adulthood (“increased”); and (4) consistently
lowest levels of sexual risk (“low”). More African Americans were found among the decreased trajectory group; among the low
risk group a higher number of youth came from families with parents who spoke a language other than English. The high-risk
group had a higher percentage of subjects in non-metropolitan areas and highest alcohol use. Among males, being employed and
being in the military were associated with inclusion in the high-risk group. Results have implications for specializing prevention
strategies for youth with different patterns of sexual risk.
