"DOWN THERE ON A VISIT" SOUTHERN AFRICA TWENTYFIVE YEARS ON

Leonie Lichtenstein was born and educated in South Africa. She taught at schools and at the University of Witwatersrand and was for a period a full-time organiser for the Liberal Party in South Africa. She lived in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) from 1957–1962, where she and her husband became involved in the struggle against white minority rule. She moved with her family to England in 1962 where she was a lecturer in English at Goldsmith's College, University of London, and also active in community relations and as a governor of schools and higher education colleges.
In 1988 she returned to South Africa to give the keynote address to the Association of University English Teachers of South Africa on Literature and Politics. The present article stems from that visit. Soon after completing it, on 10 May 1989, she died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 58. She had completed a novel shortly before her death.

She is also affiliated with the Institute for Research on Poverty and the La Follette Institute of Public Affairs. She is spending this year at the Russell Sage Foundation writing a book (with Robert Haveman) on intergenerational determinants of success of young adults. She is author of numerous articles on health, education, government policies, and economics of the disabled.

She is a licensed family therapist. She is co-author of Sociology;and Growing Old in America (the latter published by Transaction).She is also author of Older Women.Her current research focuses on gender-specific predictors of nursing home placement, health correlates of depression in old age, and the portrayal of older women in film.     

Columbus’ fall from grace

She has written widely on early modern Spanish history. Among her books are The Changing Face of Empire: Charles V, Philip II and Habsburg Authority, 1551–1559; Armada. The Official Catalogue of the National Maritime Museum Exhibition.She is also co-editor (with Simon Adams) of England, Spain, and the Gran Armada, 1585–1604. Essays from the Anglo-Spanish Conferences, London and Madrid, 1988.

She is an analyst of urban transport and land use. She is co-author of five of the Worldwatch Institute’s State of the World reports, and author of the reports Alternatives to the Automobile: Transport for Livable Cities;and Shaping Cities: The Environmental and Human Dimensions.

She is author of The Origins American Social Science,a study of economics, sociology, political science, and history from their eighteenth-century roots to 1929.
