Assessment of changes in the spongy bone structure of the upper end of the humerus is one of the common methods of age estimation. This method was devised many years ago (1894) and has never been verified in an objective numerical testing. We projected an objective morphometric method assessment of the upper end of the humerus. The study was carried out on humeri from cadavers of 88 men and 84 women. The surface area of atrophy of the spongy structure (medullary cavity) was calculated on the longitudinal section of the humerus. A new morphometric method was applied, which allowed numerical presentation of results. The results of the study show a lack of statistical correlation between atrophy of the spongy structure within the upper end of the humerus and the chronological age. Therefore, it can be concluded that the assessment of humerus structure should be omitted in the forensic medical age estimation.  相似文献

A morphometric study on the kidneys of cot death cases and age-matched controls was carried out using a point-counting method. The average proportions of the various kidney structures, especially the percentage of foetal glomeruli, were similar in both groups. This percentage decreased after the age of six months. The hypothesis that cot death may be caused by renal insufficiency associated with immaturity of glomeruli gained no morphological or morphometric support.  相似文献

Different brain sections were studied in 20 subjects, who died of ethanol intoxication and in 14 subjects who died of injuries of the heart and main vessels, in order to detect histological changes in the brain and for the purpose of defining spatial and quantitative ratios between cerebral tissue structures in alcoholic intoxication. Different histological, stereometric and morphometric tools were made use of. It was demonstrated that, in alcoholic intoxication, there occur severe disorders of the circulation with affection of vessels in the brain; there are also dystrophic and necrotic changes in neurocytes, glial cells and white substance. The square of neurons shrinks due to death of some of them in the cortex of hemispheres, thalamus and cerebellum. As for the medulla, they are more resistant, there, to ethanol. The diameter of capillaries in the studied brain sections diminishes due to a reduced tonus of cerebral arteries; the quantity of such vessels increases within a standard area, which is conditioned by the compensatory opening of reserve capillaries. All this can be important in dealing with issues of thanatogenesis and of forensic medical diagnosis in death of alcoholic intoxication.  相似文献

Recently, a method which estimates the sex of unknown skeletal remains by discriminant function analysis of the patella has received much recognition. With seven simple measurements and a sexing accuracy of almost 84% this morphometric approach would be very suitable both in the forensic and anthropological context. In order to put this method to the test, 52 unfractured and non-pathological left and right patellae (26 males, 26 females) from a prehistoric skeletal sample were analyzed. In addition, 30 patellae were randomly selected which were not part of the original reference series. The first 15 (4 males, 11 females) had the same sample origin as the 30 target specimen but were of mediocre preservational state. The second 15 belonged to an archaeological sample of different provenience (8 males, 7 females). The results of the current study indicate that the morphometric assessment of this sesamoid is indeed well-suited as the results of the previous study could be duplicated, when sample size was not taken into consideration (85%). However, when the issue of small sample size was systematically addressed via a jack-knife procedure or the calculation of Delta-value, the resultant accuracies dropped to 78 and 74%, respectively. It is suggested that two confounding factors--age and sex of the individual--may be held accountable. There are slight, whilst not statistically significant tendencies to misclassify female and older specimen.  相似文献

In many crimes, the elapsed time between production and collecting fingermark traces is crucial. and a method able to detect the aging of latent prints would represent an improvement in forensic procedures. Considering that as the latent print gets older, substantial changes in the relative proportion of individual components secreted by skin glands could affect the morphology of ridges, morphometry could be a potential tool to assess the aging of latent fingermarks. Then, considering the very limited research in the field, the present work aims to evaluate the morphometry of latent palmprint ridges, as a function of time, in order to identify an aging pattern. The latent marks were deposited by 20 donors on glass microscope slides considering pressure and contact angle, and then were maintained under controlled environmental conditions. The morphometric study was conducted on marks developed with magnetic powder in 7 different time intervals after deposition (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 days); 60 ridges were evaluated for each developed mark. The results showed that: 1) the method for the replacement and mixing of skin secretions on the palm was appropriate to ensure reproducibility of latent prints, and 2) considering the studied group, there was a time-dependent reduction in the width of ridges and on the percentage of visible ridges over 30 days. Results suggest the possibility of using the morphometric method to determine an aging profile of latent palmprints on glass surface, aiming for forensic purposes.  相似文献

Many histological methods in forensic anthropology utilize combinations of traditional histomorphometric parameters which may not accurately describe the morphology of microstructural features. Here, we report the novel application of a geometric morphometric method suitable when considering structures without anatomically homologous landmarks for the quantification of complete secondary osteon size and morphology. The method is tested for its suitability in the measurement of intact secondary osteons using osteons digitized from transverse femoral diaphyseal sections prepared from two human individuals. The results of methodological testing demonstrate the efficacy of the technique when applied to intact secondary osteons. In providing accurate characterization of micromorphology within the robust mathematical framework of geometric morphometrics, this method may surpass traditional histomorphometric variables currently employed in forensic research and practice. A preliminary study of the intersectional histomorphometric variation within the femoral diaphysis is made using this geometric histomorphometric method to demonstrate its potential.  相似文献

The cellular distribution of extravasated plasma proteins in cortical contusions was studied with an immunoperoxidase method using polyclonal antibodies against human plasma albumin, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, alpha 2-macroglobulin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, transferrin, hemopexin, haptoglobin, fibrinogen, fibronectin and immunoglobulin G. The material consisted of 24 human autopsy brains with a primary diagnosis of cerebral contusion due to blunt trauma. The time interval between injury and death ranged between minutes and 7 years. Immediately after the trauma, a complete breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) occurred with hemorrhage and extravasation of all types of plasma proteins. This was followed by spreading of edema fluid within the extracellular space in and around the wound. Uptake of extravasated protein by glial cells began on the 3rd day followed by proliferation of reactive astrocytes whose ample cytoplasm appeared to serve as a reservior for the extravasated plasma proteins. Within the reactive astrocytes, plasma proteins and S-100 protein had a similar and diffuse distribution in the immunostained sections. The plasma proteins once incorporated into the glial cells remained unchanged for several years with little sign of degradation. It is suggested that the extravasated plasma proteins subsequent to uptake and processing by the glial cells, may serve some important physiological function in wound healing.  相似文献

The principal characteristics of the investigations performed to specify methods for estimation of the time of death (TD) are presented. The studies included the measurement of electric conductivity of organs and tissues depending on the time of death and the evaluation of contractile activities of smooth muscle cells in response to the application of an electric current. A new method for the estimation of the time of death with the use of morphometric techniques is described. The results of histostereometric measurements are used for the first time to characterize the intensity of autolysis. Forensic medical mycological studies have been carried out. A combined approach to the determination of the time of death is proposed including mathematical simulation.  相似文献

The identification of biological race (ancestry) in skeletal material is an important aspect of forensic investigations. While techniques for race determination are well established for adult skeletons, identification of race in sub-adult specimens has not been widely addressed. The present study investigates racial differences in the mandibular morphology of sub-adult specimens using geometric morphometric analyses. One hundred and seventy-four mandibles from five morphologically distinct samples were digitized and subjected to general Procrustes analysis. Results showed significant morphological differences between the samples and obtained cross-validation results of over 70% accuracy in identification of unknown individuals using the complete mandible. It is suggested that these techniques could provide a method for the identification of race in sub-adult individuals.  相似文献

Application of a morphometric method for investigation of chronic virus hepatitis in drug addicts and persons rejecting drug abuse is described. Chronic hepatitis in narcomania runs with frequent formation of lymphoid follicules in the portal tracts, relatively inactive portal hepatitis in marked lobular component of inflammation, pronounced fibrosis and early formation of micronodular hepatic cirrhosis, proliferation of biliary ducts, high neutrophil, eosinophil and macrophage content in the infiltrate, accumulation of macrophages in the portal tracts by granuloma type. These criteria are recommended for diagnosis of narcomania by morphological findings.  相似文献

Previous studies suggest that palate shape is a useful indicator of biological ancestry in human remains. This study evaluates interobserver error in ancestry estimation using palate shape and explores palate shape variation in Gullah (descendants of West Africans) and Seminole (Indigenous American) population samples using geometric morphometric analysis. Ten participants were asked to ascribe biological ancestry and shape to 28 dental casts based on a classification scheme employed in previous studies. The mean correct classification was 42.0%, indicating that the likelihood of assigning the correct ancestry is very poor and not significantly different from random assignment (= 0.12). The accuracy analysis based on categorical classification of the casts was complemented by geometric morphometric analysis of nine 3D landmarks reflecting palate shape of 158 casts. Principal component analysis results show no difference between populations regarding palate shape, and cross‐validated discriminant function analysis correctly classified only 62.0% of the specimens. Combined, these results show that previous methods to estimate ancestry are inaccurate and that this inaccuracy is probably due to a lack of palate shape differences between groups, rather than limitation of the analytical method per se. Therefore, we recommend caution should be used when choosing to apply the analysis of palate shape in forensically relevant contexts.  相似文献

The present morphometric investigation was carried out using dura matter preparations, capsules, and contents of 94 encapsulated subdural hematomas obtained from the corpses of subjects with a non-penetrating craniocerebral injury and the duration of the post-traumatic period ranging from 8 days to 2.5 years. The correlation analysis confirmed the necessity of differentiation between resorbed and unresorbed encapsulated subdural hematomas. The data obtained were used to construct 5 regression models for the estimation of the age of unresorbed encapsulated subdural hematomas and 1 regression model for the identification of the age of resorbed encapsulated subdural hematomas. The regression models included different combinations of three morphometric characteristics of the hematoma capsule as the independent variables, viz. maximum thickness, relative extent of hemosiderosis, and relative amount of macrophages in the cellular infiltrate. The amount of variability in the age of encapsulated subdural hematomas accounted for by the regression models is 62%. It is concluded that the results of the study can be used in the practical work of forensic medical experts.  相似文献

This research investigated the sexual dimorphism of the first human rib using geometric morphometric and metric approaches on a sample of 285 specimens containing European Americans and African Americans from the Hamann‐Todd collection. Metric measurements were investigated for sexual dimorphism and ancestral differences using univariate statistics. Four type II landmarks and 40 sliding semi‐landmarks were placed outlining the dorsal and ventral curvatures of the ribs. Landmark data were processed using Generalized Procrustes Analyses with Procrustes distance sliding, and the subsequent coordinates were investigated for sexual dimorphism and ancestral differences using Procrustes ANOVAs. Both geometric morphometric and metric data were analyzed using cross‐validated discriminant function analyses to test the hypothesis that variables from both approaches can be combined to increase sex classification rate. European Americans had sex correctly classified as high as 88.05% and African Americans as high as 70.86% using a combination of metric and geometric morphometric variables.  相似文献

Fatalities due to extreme environmental temperatures involving hypothermia (cold exposure) and hyperthermia (heat stroke) might present with poor or nonspecific morphological pathologies, which are insufficient to establish the cause of death in forensic practice. The present study immunohistochemically investigated basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S100β and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) in the parietal lobe and hippocampus of the brain in fatalities from hypothermia (n=15) and hyperthermia (n=18), and compared them to those of controls (n=39), including acute death due to ischemic heart disease, mechanical asphyxiation and drowning. In addition, S100β concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was measured. Characteristic findings in hypothermia cases were higher glial bFGF immunopositivity in the cerebral cortex and white matter, and higher S100β immunopositivity in the cerebral cortex with a lower CSF S100β concentration. Hyperthermia showed lower glial GFAP and S100β immunopositivities in the white matter, and higher neuronal ssDNA immunopositivity in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, accompanied by high glial bFGF and S100β immunopositivities in the cerebral cortex. These findings suggest neuroprotective glial responses without marked neuronal or glial damage in fatal hypothermia, and diffuse neuronal apoptosis despite initiation of neuroprotective cortical astrocyte responses, accompanied by glial damage in the white matter, in fatal hyperthermia. These markers may be useful for evaluating brain damage and responses in fatalities due to extreme environmental temperatures.  相似文献

Abstract: The aim of this study was to work out a biometric method for personal identification by comparing simulated antemortem and postmortem digital radiographs of unrestored teeth. Intra‐oral radiographs of the inferior right first molar, without restorations, were acquired at two different times in 70 subjects using a standardized technique followed by a morphometric analysis. The program automatically supplied values of the absolute distances, relative distances, shape factors, moments, perimeter values, and the areas of the triangles, which were obtained by joining key reference points. The values for the homologous samples were compared with the heterologous samples. Statistical analysis was then carried out, resulting in a section point value of 0.9992. Higher correlation coefficients indicate positive identification, with less than 2% risk of false positives, and approximately 3% of false negatives. We have also tested the method on dental records from 30 patients in order to demonstrate the specificity and sensitivity of the system.  相似文献

Burns and inhalation of toxic gases, including carbon monoxide (CO) and cyanide, which are produced by combustion, are major factors involved in fire death. The present study immunohistochemically investigated basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) in the brains of fire fatalities (n=49) to examine the differences between fatal burns and CO intoxication, compared with those in cardiac deaths (n=24) and mechanical asphyxiation cases (n=23). In acute fire fatality, neuronal ssDNA immunopositivity in the cerebral cortex of the parietal lobe was high in both fatal burns and fatal CO intoxication, but that of the pallidum was higher for CO intoxication than for burns. The number of neurons was decreased in prolonged fire deaths, irrespective of the severity of burns or CO intoxication, but glias were increased in cases of fatal burns. Prolonged deaths due to burns had a higher glial bFGF immunopositivity in the cortex and white matter, higher and lower glial GFAP immunopositivity in the cortex and white matter, respectively, and a low neuronal ssDNA immunopositivity in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. In prolonged deaths due to CO intoxication, however, glial bFGF and GFAP immunopositivities were low at each site, but neuronal ssDNA immunopositivity showed a higher value. These observations suggest increased cerebral neuronal ssDNA immunopositivity to be a finding of vitality in acute fire death, and a neuronal loss accompanied by active glial responses after severe burns, and a neuronal loss and progressive apoptosis without glial responses after CO intoxication to be characteristic in prolonged death.  相似文献

应用免疫组织化学LSAB法和图像处理系统,对德国慕尼黑大学法医学研究所1994年尸检冠心病猝死和对照组病例(各15例)的心肌肌动蛋白缺失情况进行定量研究。发现冠心病猝死病例心肌纤维内有明显的肌动蛋白缺失,是大小不一,多发、散在分布;对照组无或仅局限性小灶状缺失。将检测结果定量分析比较,其差异非常显著,说明重度冠状动脉粥样硬化患者是否冠心病猝死,其心肌肌动蛋白缺失的范围和程度有明显差异,冠心病猝死和对照组病例心肌肌动蛋白缺失的差异具有诊断意义,而形态定量分析能较客观准确地反映心肌纤维内肌动蛋白缺失量的变化。  相似文献

波形蛋白是主要存在于间充质细胞中的一种中间丝,与脑损伤后的反应性胶质化和瘢痕修复密切相关。近年来国内外研究发现波形蛋白在脑损伤后胶质瘢痕的形成过程中扮演着重要角色。脑损伤后不同时段,波形蛋白町莺新表达,其表达的部位及含量呈一定波动性,而这些问题对法医学探讨脑损伤时间具有十分重要的意义。本文就波形蛋白的生物学特性、活性调节、在脑损伤中作用及其法医学意义作一综述,希望能为法医学脑损伤时间推断提供一定的参考。  相似文献
