Longevity Ancient and Modern

The article examines illustrations from ancient and modern societies to consider the connections between power, social elites and knowledge of techniques to promote longevity. In pre-modern societies, knowledge of practices and substances to promote longevity were cultivated by elites such as the Chinese imperial court. In modern societies, new technologies—cryonics, cloning, stem-cell applications and nanotechnology—will offer exclusive and expensive methods for prolonging life for the rich. However one important difference between the ancient and modern world is that with secularization longevity is no longer connected with a moral life; longevity is not a reward for sanctity. We have democratized the ambition for long life but not necessarily its realization. The modern quest for longevity appears to be connected with the desire of Baby Boomer generations to hold on to their assets, but while modern medicine may help us to survive forever, it cannot tell us how to live forever.

Celebrity Ancient and Modern

Popular belief to the contrary, celebrity has a very long history. Many of the indications of a celebrity culture were already in place in classical antiquity. By drawing on examples from the rich literary tradition of Greece and Rome we can better understand and analyze what is very likely to have been a perennial aspect of the human psyche in all developed societies the world over.

韩国古代建国神话概述

韩国古代建国神话包括古朝鲜檀君神话、高句丽朱蒙神话、新罗朴赫居世神话、伽国金首露王神话等。在这些神话中,有很多共性元素,如天降、卵生、天父地母等。这些共性元素反映了韩国原始初民的天神崇拜、日神崇拜和最初的阴阳观念;卵生与稻作文化又有着息息相关的关系,韩国建国神话中普遍出现的卵生说印证了以稻作生产交流为途径的中韩文化交流。     

等级结构与古代中国社会矛盾的生成

建立在等级结构基础上的社会也可以出现和谐局面,但这种局面必然因为其自身社会矛盾的不断生成而遭破坏。等级结构虽然包含"定纷止争"的目的,但不能从根本上避免社会矛盾的生成,等级结构所造成的矛盾无论在数量上还是在程度上都不亚于它所能解决的矛盾。在等级社会,亲与贵、亲与贤、富与贵等之间的矛盾,以及上与下、成与败、贤与愚等之间的矛盾都带有政治斗争的性质,而两极分化也有其必然性。     

中国古代清官的人格力量及其现代传承

中华文明上下五千年的历史进程中,无数清官名臣的光辉事迹被载入史册,其中蕴含着尊老孝亲、治国安邦、作风俭廉、忧国忧民、敢于担当等丰富内涵和精神特质的人格力量也随之流芳千古、熠熠生辉。当前我国正处于推进国家治理体系和治理能力现代化建设的关键时期,应深刻总结古代清官人格力量的形成机制,探寻其向现代转换的实现路径,建构新时代的政德文化:弘扬古代清官“修身正己”的人格力量,提高领导干部自持力;弘扬古代清官“勤政恤民”的人格力量,增强领导干部为民意识;弘扬古代清官“为政俭廉”的人格力量,引导领导干部廉洁从政。

江苏的邮驿、烽火及民信局是古代中国通信的有机组成部分,为古代江苏及全国政令讯息的传输,政治、经济、文化的发展,密切人们之间的联系做出了重要贡献。但古代江苏通信机制的弊端亦十分突出,因此,时代呼唤江苏大地上出现一种高效、方便、经济的新的通信方式。     

Leo Strauss: the Ancient as Modern

Although his approach to politics and philosophy were relatively little known outside the United States, Leo Strauss was perhaps the most revered and the most controversial figure in post-war American political science. His followers today form what is arguably the most cohesive intellectual fraternity in the discipline. They constitute a highly influential opposition to the empirical-quantitative course taken by political science and political philosophy.
This study explores Strauss's ideas highlighting the unconventional mixture of substance and style that gives them an arrestingly idiosyncratic character. Substantively, Strauss belonged to the pre-modern intellectual tradition that understood Truth as accessible and knowable through philosophical contemplation. The form of his argumentation, however, his relentless critique of modernity and the moderns, is conducted with all the cognitive weaponry provided for by the modernist intellectual style.
