China is a culturally rich and diverse country. Throughout the nation, 56 ethnic groups have been identified. And though the majority Han (90.56 percent of the population) dominate, the rest of the ethnicities enrich the country in a variety of ways, be it linguistic, gastronomic, artistic or historic. Yet poverty, illiteracy, as well as lack of educational and medical services have hindered the advancement of these peoples. While ethnic minorities have lagged behind in terms of economic, educational, and societal advancement, the government has pledged to assist in their development, and is attaching greater importance to helping minorities catch up to the dominant culture.  相似文献

The Bouyei people have a long history. In their own language, "Bou" means "ethnic group" or "people," and "yei'" and its variants refer to the name of an ethnic minority. Thus, in the old local chronicles, the Bouyei nationality is sometimes recorded as "Yei nationality","Yei family " or "Yei people." As well as their self-appellations, the Bouyei people in different areas referred to other groups of Bouyei as "Bulong Buna Butu Budou Buyang " and "Bulongha" etc.  相似文献

Born and growing up in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, I felt a sense of unfairness between the Han people like me and the ethnic minority groups living there. Many of my classmates from the ethnic minorities had at least one sibling, but most of the Hans didn't. Though the one-child policy prevailed at that time, the ethnic minorities were exempted.  相似文献

Snuff bottles
Snuff bottles first appeared in China in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and, as their name suggests, were originally indeed used as a container for snuff tobacco, first of all by the Manchu, Mongols and Tibetans. The reason for their popularity at that time is to be found in the customs of those ethnic minorities: because those ethnic groups mainly led a nomadic life that entailed frequent use of hay or firewood. Paul Dornian, director of Canada's Mount Royal Conservatory and the initiator of the Morning-side Music Bridge (MMB) scheme, attends the auditions as a judge, but acts more like a kindly father.
