Holding on to History in Changing Times

THE 30 years of China＇s reform and opening-up correspond roughly with my own lifetime. I was born in 1973, so I＇ve never known a China that wasn＇t a rising economic power. Having lived in China for just over a year, I also haven＇t personally witnessed the immense changes that have swept across the People＇s Republic since economic liberalization commenced in the late 1970s.

“Hello!” in China

Having been a laowai in Suzhou for 4 years in the past, I am familiar with the "Hello!" phenomenon as pointed out by Mr. Olivier Roos in China Today August 2002. This has, however, never caused me any irritation. By responding with "Hello" or "Nihao," I could start a conversation, mostly with young students, who wanted to practice English.

Just Call Me ＂Three F Li＂
