At just 12 kilometers from the East Third Ring Road.Tongzhou is one of Beijing‘s closest suburban districts.On an inspection tour in late 2002.top Beijing Municipality leader Liu Qi defined Tongzhou as“…neither an outer suburb,nor a satellite city.but a new urban district.”Work is currently underway to make it just that .Following implementation of the Greater Beijing Strategy.the capital is to expand into its periphery and so relieve the high density in its downtown area.One way of achieving this is to extend the 50-kilometer Chang an Avenue from Shijingshan District to Tongzhou Distric.     

The Quest for Sustainable Security

China-Africa Seeking Equality

In the context of today's globalization,peace and stability will not prevail in the world unless they first materialize in Africa.This is the view of Liu Guijin,Special Representative of the Chinese Government for African Affairs.As long as the African continent is mired in pov- erty,wars and chaos,the world will not be able to embrace common prosperity,said Liu.He is calling for the international community to assist the continent in resolving its problems with concrete actions,an endeavor that requires the collaboration of all countries and regions, including those from Europe,China and Africa.Liu recently made these and other assessments on the China-Africa connection at a joint interview with CHINAFRICA reporter Wang Zhe and Beijing Review reporter Yan Wei.The main points follow:

Does Selectivity in Passenger Pickup Reflect Wisdom or a Moral Crisis?

Zang Qin, 42, a taxi driver in Shanghai, came into the media spotlight because of a blog posting, and has now become a household name in China. It all started from a conversation between Zang and Liu Run, a department manager for Microsoft (China) Corp., when Liu took Zang's taxi in the middle of March. Liu posted an article on his blog noting how Zang had a monthly income of 8,000 yuan (almost twice the average income of local taxi drivers) by choosing the time he works, his customers and routes to control costs. Zang said he is a happy driver, good at finding pleasure in work. Liu's article was later linked to other websites and caused a sensation. According to Beijing Youth Daily, Liu invited Zang to Microsoft to give a lecture to some 50 employees. The 45-minute speech was interrupted eight times by hearty applause.
