An instructional aid for courses in corrections: The correctional institutions environment scale

This paper describes the use of Moos’ (1974) Correctional Institutions Environment Scale (CIES) as a supplemental instructional technique in criminal justice courses on corrections. Utilization of the CIES (Form I) provides students with feedback on their values and goal orientations toward correctional programs, and provides a means to organize class discussions on correctional environments. Sample CIES profiles of students are presented, and various instructional uses are delineated.     

Models of mental health service delivery to correctional institutions

The mentally disordered offender falls into the "no man's land" between prison and mental health systems. A number of reasons are given to explain why mental health service to this special group is in crisis again, and to lay the base for understanding the advantages and disadvantages of five different models of service delivery. The authors conclude by favoring small psychiatric units attached to major prisons.     

Guidelines in forensic odontology: legal aspects

The task of the forensic dentist is ruled by an obligation to be diligent and prudent. If guidelines should exist which are recognised by the dental forensic community, they will probably be used to judge his work, even if guidelines are only considered as recommendations. The questions to be answered are: who issued these guidelines and are they conform to evidence-based forensic odontology.

事业单位人事法制建设的几点思考

建立完善的人事法律体系是我国民主法制建设的重要组成部分,是建设服务型政府、法治政府的需要。随着事业单位人事制度改革的推进,相关的法律法规建设也有待加强和完善,尤其是增加行政法规和部门规章的立法项目。尽快出台具有权威性的法律法规,对事业单位聘用制度、岗位管理、工资福利等方面进行全面规范。     

HIV/AIDS legal issues in the United States

The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to be a leading public health issue in the United States. During the past decade, the epidemic has shifted away from the gay community, although gay and bisexual men continue to be the largest single HIV exposure category. Now, HIV increasingly affects low-income people of colour in urban areas, as well as women. As AIDS becomes more and more a minority, inner-city disease, public focus on the epidemic as a significant social and political issue is waning. While a full survey of current issues in US law is beyond the scope of this article, the focus here is on current issues that are highly relevant to the direction the epidemic appears to be taking.     

Agency problems in the legal political system and supreme auditing institutions

The analysis shows that there are agency problems in the legal political system. Thus there is a need for auditing services that have to be delivered by the supreme audit institution. There are considerable problems in motivating auditors to perform high-quality audits and there is an urgent need to develop effective performance and effectiveness technologies. However, even if these problems could be solved perfectly, an important problem remains: how to ensure that politicians really use the audit results.     

Clinical studies in the intensive care unit: ethical and legal aspects

This article draws on international experience to explore the ethical and legal aspects of performing clinical studies on patients in intensive care units. It discusses aspects of consent relevant to clinical studies in this medical environment, it considers the involvement of ethical committees, and the role and appropriate level of intensive cover.
