A Review and Reflection on the Development of Muslim Radicalism Lu Zhongwei Abstract： The Islamic civilization reached its peak in the Middle Ages and has been gradually declined since then. In the past few centuries, the Islamic revival movement has been widely spreading in the world. Over the past dec- ades, the Islamic revival trends and movement in the Middle East and other regions can be roughly divided into conservative, moderate and radical factions. The radicals are advocating implementing religious extremism. The modern Muslim extremists and their terrorist activities have not only been undermining the international security, but also posing a great threat to China＇ s national security. To cope with the threat of terrorism, the international community should not only make military strikes, but also take action on the ideological level. The arms race noninteraction puzzle: The effects of concept choice and measurement error on the estimation of the U.S.‐U.S.S.R. arms race

The continuing failure to find interaction in the U.S.‐U.S.S.R. arms race remains a puzzle. In this analysis the effects of concept choice and measurement error on the estimation of a Richardson‐type model of the U.S.‐U.S.S.R. arms race is examined. Employing a multiple indictor model, it is demonstrated that significant random and systematic measurement error exists. The use of military expenditures as an indicator of economic burden is shown to generate severe statistical problems. Lastly, it is demonstrated that the lack of fit of typical single indicator models is more a measurement error problem than a model specification problem.     

The ＂Blacklist＂ Dispute： U.S. vs. DPRK

The designation of the Democratic People＇s Republic of Korea as state sponsor of terrorism is not only one ot the core reasons for the Bush administration to define the DPRK as a member of the axis of evil as well as the outpost of tyranny, but also constitutes the root cause of hostility and tension between the two countries. The issue of DPRK＇s inclusion on the U.S. blacklist of terrorism-sponsoring countries occurred before the nuclear issue. But the Bush administration now links the two issues and regards the denuclearization of DPRK as the precondition for its removal from the blacklist of terrorism-supporting states. Hence, a new round of game is unfolding between the United States and the DPRK on how to remove the latter from the list.

Not only does this kind of influence have its roots in history and imagination,but it is also an inevitable result of China’s growing strength and economy over the past few decades.It is difficult to accurately quantify a country’s international influence.China’s growing international influence has its own distinct characteristics,marked by the country’s unique national interests.A more influential China is not only good for China’s own development;it is also good for the world.     

SUMMARY

Zhang Hong Ukraine society has been confronted with transition from socialist to capitalist sys terns since its independence. Politically its social transition can be understood as a process of building a modern state that not only involves the reconstruction of a nation-state but also involves the building of democracy-state. Social transition triggers contradictions in the historical, cultural and religious identification of Ukraine society, polemics on the road of economic development, and the crisis of po litical democracy.

Retrosvect of the International Situation in 2013,by DingYuanhong, former Chinese Ambassador to EU. In retrospect of the international situation in 2013, we can see that the general situation was still a complex and unrest one, which was characterized by the following aspects： the legacy of the global financial and economic crisis is apparent, as the economic recovery of the developed nations was weak, and the economic development of emerging economies and developing countries got slowdown, but the fiscal conditions of emerging economies and developing countries were still better than those of the developed nations; the Obama administration was deep in trouble with its credibility dropping, as the incident of ~＇prism＂ has caused further damage; the economy of EU was slumping, and EU as a whole was slowly declining, with an intensified internal contradiction and a lost future; new developments that would have long-term effects emerged from the Middle East turmoil; China has made significant achievements both in internal politics and diplomacy, which were taken as the brightest spots of the international situation in 2013.     

ABSTRACTS

With the date of NATO＇s International Security Assistance Forces withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014 approaching, the contention among big powers in the region is getting more complex and intense. Such a withdrawal will not only make the US and NATO face serious challenges, but also the Central Asian region face bigger risks. Afghanistan＇s future is full of uncertainties. In view of her future strategic need in the region, China should get herself well prepared and planned for the＂post NATO era＂in Afghanistan.
